‘Shogun’ Series Premiere Recap: House of Lords
  + stars: | 2024-02-27 | by ( Sean T. Collins | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There is no shogun, no unquestioned and absolute ruler, holding the country’s fractious lords together when “Shogun” begins. The Erasmus, with its cargo of guns and ammo and its irascible English pilot, is the harbinger of a world war into which Japan doesn’t even realize it’s been drafted. Adapted by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks from the 1975 novel by James Clavell, “Shogun” co-stars Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne, the Erasmus’s pilot, or navigator. Blackthorne is part of a small fleet commissioned by England to find the mysterious and very wealthy island of Japan, and harry any Catholic forces along the way. This is no fit state under which to meet Lord Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano), an opportunistic sadist who aims to hang onto the ship and its weaponry for himself.

“They continue to surprise us,” said one senior defense official, referring to the Houthis. Officials also believe Iran instructed the groups to back off the attacks following the US strikes. The issue is becoming more acute, especially given the notable increase in Houthi attacks over the last two days. At the same time, the Houthis also crave international legitimacy, officials said, and want to be recognized as the official Yemeni government. Still, there are no signs yet that Iran is actively withholding support from the Houthis, officials said.

While earnings, profit margins, and cash flow came in slightly ahead of expectations, sales were light across the board. Segment margin , similar to an adjusted operating income margin, grew 64 basis points to 23.5%, slightly ahead of expectations and ahead of the high-end of management's previous forecast. Segment margin performance was largely better than expected, with the exception of Building Technologies, and cash flow generation came in solidly above expectations. Where they landed on guidance both in terms of sales and margin performance, and therefore earnings, hinges on the short-cycle recovery. Full-year segment margin guidance of 23.15% at the midpoint was higher than estimates.

The market is going to worsen early in 2024 before recovering, according to Evercore ISI. The firm sees the S & P 500 falling in the first half of next year to 3,970 as a "recession materializes and politics [amplify] volatility." An inverted yield curve also portends the start of a recessionary period in the first quarter of 2024, he added. "'Defense Wins Championships' is a consistent theme between [the] last hike and first cut in the recession playbook," said Emanuel. By comparison, the S & P 500 is up 20.1% year to date.

"In a recession, we expect the S&P 500 would end 2024 at 3700 (-18%)," Kostin wrote. Bottom line This was a very strong quarter, with almost nothing to nitpick. This year's rapid Data Center sales growth we've seen has been driven largely by cloud providers and enterprises. Sales to China and other impacted regions have, in the past few quarters, accounted for 20% to 25% of Data Center sales. However, the team added that they "believe the decline will be more than offset by strong growth in other regions." Guidance Looking ahead to Nvidia's fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, we once again got far stronger guidance than Wall Street was modeling.

Several large investment firms are writing off a recession in the US in 2024 as growth holds up and inflation steadily declines, but T. Rowe Price thinks that optimism may be misplaced. While T. Rowe Price doesn't have an official call on the economy, the brightest minds at the $1.4 trillion Baltimore-based firm urged investors to be cautious at a mid-November conference. However, T. Rowe Price is skeptical that the Fed will end its fight against inflation anytime soon. T. Rowe Price found that through October, those names rose 53.2% compared to a 1.2% year-to-date return for the other 493 companies in the S&P 500. Dom Rizzo, a portfolio manager of global technology equity strategy at T. Rowe Price, agreed that the Magnificent 7's momentum won't stop just because the group is pricey.

On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. WASHINGTON (AP) — The World Bank reported Monday that oil prices could be pushed into “uncharted waters” if the violence between Israel and Hamas intensifies, which could result in increased food prices worldwide. The World Bank report simulates three scenarios for the global oil supply in the event of a small, medium or large disruption. But during a “medium disruption” — equivalent to the disruptions experienced during the Iraq war — the global oil supply would decline by 3 million to 5 million barrels per day, driving oil prices up possibly by 35%. Ayhan Kose, the World Bank’s deputy chief economist, said higher oil prices will inevitably result in higher food prices. Overall, oil prices have risen about 6% since the start of the conflict.

"The economy is defying gravity" after third-quarter GDP approached 5%, according to JPMorgan portfolio manager Phil Camporeale. If no recession materializes, as Camporeale expects, then investors should buy high-yield bonds. The US economy posted third-quarter GDP growth of 4.9%, representing its strongest quarterly growth since late 2021, and that's after multiple quarters of above-trend growth. The stock market is missing one key ingredient to mount a year-end rally, according to Bank of America. Karl Ove Knausgaard’s Novel for Our Precarious Times

THE WOLVES OF ETERNITY, by Karl Ove Knausgaard. As the late Milan Kundera put it: “A novel does not assert anything; a novel searches and poses questions.” But in our manic and precarious times, fiction that conveys no sense of a world in upheaval can feel partial. With “The Wolves of Eternity,” the Norwegian distance runner Karl Ove Knausgaard brings us his second massive speculative novel in three years. Like its predecessor, “The Morning Star” (2020), the new novel comprises multiple narratives filtered through various characters. The first half of the novel, a section titled “Syvert,” is the anchor narrative.
