Dr. Susannah Hills John AbbottTo my surprise, I was diagnosed with skin cancer on my scalp. Basal cell cancer. Still, it seemed so strange to me that my skin cancer showed up on my scalp, underneath a covering of hair. An exam should be done every year to monitor unusual skin changes, or if you are at higher risk for developing skin cancer. I learned the hard way that anyone can get skin cancer and it can show up where you least expect.

But I moved to San Francisco at the same time as that raise — and taxes are much higher here — so my post-promotion paychecks only increased by $50. I know I'm going to have to be more conscious about eating out to make room for those payments.

Experts say it's important to grieve career regret, but in reality, there are chances for do-overs. Career regret is linked to anxiety as well as employee dissatisfaction, disengagement, and turnover. 'You need to forgive yourself'The difference between career regret and run-of-the-mill career disappointment is that the root of regret stems from a decision you made, as opposed to one that was made for you. A career disappointment is the job you didn't get; a career regret is the job you walked away from and can't get off your mind. A board-certified dermatologist said doctors still don't know the risks UV lamps used for gel manicures pose. Gel manicures only expose the skin to UV light for a short time, but frequent exposure may have long-term consequences. The dermatologist said to wear sunscreen and fingerless gloves to limit your UV light exposure. Similarly, a previous study published in JAMA in 2014 suggested the carcinogenic risk from UV lamps is too small to stop people from getting their nails done. Consider bringing fingerless gloves and sunscreen to the nail salonApplying sunscreen to your fingers and hands can help protect them from UV exposure.
In fact, the results reaffirm the reason why some dermatologists have changed the way they get their gel manicures or have stopped getting them altogether. “Tanning beds are listed as carcinogenic and UV nail lamps are mini tanning beds for your nails in order to cure the gel nail,” Curtis said. “I would recommend alternatives to gel nails, such as the new wraps that are available online.” (Gel nail wraps or strips are stick-on gel nail products that don’t always require being set by UV nail dryers.) Some salons use LED lights, which “are thought to emit either no UV light or much, much lower amounts,” Lipner said. Russak doesn’t get gel manicures very often but uses sunscreen and gloves when she does, she said.

The study didn't look at real people, however: The researchers exposed cells derived from humans and mice to UV light from nail dryers. Previous studies have linked only a few instances of skin cancer to gel manicures. Scientists will need to study the effects of UV nail dryers in actual humans before they can make definitive conclusions about cancer risk, she added. Even so, Curtis and Zhivagui said that in their own lives, they don't ever get manicures that require UV nail dryers. Davis said some people may decide that exposure to UV radiation from gel manicures just isn't worth the gamble, given how much we still don't know.

China's 'zero-COVID' policy – including stringent lockdowns, travel restrictions and mass testing - has taken a heavy toll on the country's economy. The government's crackdown on big technology companies has also had an outsized effect on the young workforce. Chinese households overall added 10.8 trillion yuan ($1.54 trillion) in new bank savings in the first eight months of the year, up from 6.4 trillion yuan in the same period last year. China is the only leading economy that cut interest rates this year, in an effort to spur growth. Fu said she switched her makeup powder brand from Givenchy to a Chinese brand called Florasis, which is about 60% cheaper.
