New York CNN —When the latest spooky season passes, it won’t mark the end for some Spirit Halloween stores, with the chain planning to convert some locations and keep them open for the holidays. The retailer is opening a total of 10 Spirit Christmas stores, primarily in the US Northeast, filled with the winter holidays-themed items including gifts, decorations and inflatables. The pop-up chain will be a mixture of some converted Spirit Halloween stores and new locations. This year, Spirit Halloween opened a record 1,525 stores in the United States and Canada. The winter holidays are even a bigger business for Spirit Halloween to tap into: Last year, spending across the country grew nearly 4% to a record $964 billion, the NRF said.

Annual visits to strip malls surged 18% last year compared with prior to the pandemic, according to data compiled by analytics company RetailStat. The U.S. has more than 68,000 strip malls from coast to coast, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. But strip malls face criticism for being eyesores in their communities, adding to environmental problems and contributing to the demise of traditional business districts.

FAIRFAX, Va. — A jury on Friday acquitted a former police officer in Virginia of involuntary manslaughter after he fatally shot a shoplifting suspect outside a busy shopping mall. But the jury did convict the former police sergeant, Wesley Shifflett, of reckless handling of a firearm in connection with the shooting. After the shots were fired, Shifflett immediately yelled “stop reaching” and told other officers that he saw Johnson reaching in his waistband. During cross-examination, Sands asked Shifflett about shooting Johnson before commanding that the victim “stop reaching.”“My motor functions were operating more quickly than I could verbalize,” Shifflett said. The special grand jury returned indictments on charges including involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm.
