WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert late Tuesday night clarified that she’s vehemently opposed to “hate or racism” after her response to a question about social media abuse drew criticism from players in her league. Instead of addressing the matter with a simple message against online hate, Engelbert toasted their rivalry and celebrated that there’s “no more apathy” in the WNBA. "During a recent media interview, I was asked about the dark side of social media and online conversation about WNBA rivalries and race," she wrote on the platform formally known as Twitter. "To be clear, there is absolutely no place for hate or racism of any kind in the WNBA or anywhere else." Reese, an LSU alum who recently suffered a season-ending injury, is pulling down a WNBA-high 13.1 rebounds per contest.

In a fitting end to my athletic career, my husband and I got married after competing together on the college triathlon team. As our family continues to grow and change, we maintain a team-oriented approach that strengthens our bond in several ways. We continue to practice and improveSince we're still pretty new to the parenting game, we don't have much training under our belts. But hard things become easier with practice, something that my husband and I understand after years of athletics. Back when we were competing, my husband and I devoted extra time to our mental and physical well-being.

CNN —Angel Reese had a dominant performance on Friday, extending her WNBA single-season record streak for double doubles to 12 and matching the all-time record, in a big 88-84 road win for the Chicago Sky over the Seattle Storm. The former LSU star’s 12th consecutive double double matches the all-time record set by all-time WNBA great Candace Parker, who achieved the feat across the 2009 and 2010 seasons. I just go out there and do my job,” Reese said after the game about the streak. Chicago held back the persistent Storm behind a resilient Reese, who hit four clutch free throws in the final 20 seconds of the game to seal the win. Asked about the loud and pressure-filled atmosphere in Seattle and the free throws down the stretch, Reese said, “I haven’t always been great at free throws.

CNN —Angel Reese set a new WNBA record by becoming the first rookie in history to record seven consecutive double-doubles. Only two-time MVP A’ja Wilson is averaging more rebounds per game than Reese. It was a comfortable wire-to-wire win for the Sky, who led by as much as 22 points in the third quarter. The Wings made a run to close the gap to nine points in the fourth but never looked like getting within striking distance. Marina Mabrey and Chennedy Carter finished with a team-high 19 points each for the Sky, while rookie Kamilla Cardoso finished a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

CNN —Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese transferred their already storied collegiate rivalry into the professional ranks of the WNBA on Saturday, and it was Clark who came out on top. But it was far from an individual effort with Clark’s teammates helping lift the Fever to their first home win of the season. A year later, Clark and Iowa got a measure of revenge by defeating Reese and LSU in the Elite Eight of the 2024 NCAA tournament. While the rivalry between Clark and Reese was the major talking point around the game, there was a tense moment late in the third quarter elsewhere. Clark and the Indiana Fever were able to record an important home win.

New York CNN —For the first time in its 42-year history, the women’s NCAA basketball final outrated the men’s. On Monday, the University of Connecticut’s victory over Purdue in the men’s final drew 14.8 million viewers, Nielsen said. That was up a smidge from the 14.7 million who watched last year’s men’s championship game, but fell 4 million viewers short of the women’s final. To put the women’s championship game viewership in perspective, it outrated every 2023 World Series game and every NBA finals game from last year, according to Nielsen. Oh, yeah, and in the men’s college basketball final Monday, UConn won its second-straight championship, beating the Boilermakers, who were in their first final since 1969.

Women's college basketball popularity is up, but their revenue still lags behind the men's teams. AdvertisementMany women's college basketball teams are setting records for attendance and could see a subsequent revenue boost from ticket, merchandise, and concession sales. Meanwhile, the NCAA sold the television rights to the men's basketball championship separately from the other sports. The deal for men's college basketball is worth more than $1.1 billion annually and also goes through 2032. AdvertisementThose watching for the disparity in revenue between the women's and men's college basketball teams to narrow may have to be patient.
