The El Niño of 252 million years ago would have originated in the Panthalassic Ocean, a body of water much larger than today’s Pacific that could hold more heat, which in turn would have strengthened and sustained El Niño effects. The planet had experienced similar episodes earlier but they hadn’t triggered a mass extinction. A prolonged and intense El Niño also explained why extinctions had begun on land before they occurred in the ocean, the study said. This data showed how temperature rose at different latitudes as the mass extinction unfolded. El Niño events today are known to cause coral bleaching and mass mortality of fish, the study noted, but the ecological impact and future trajectory of El Niño events in a warming climate are unknown.

Not everyone who attempts suicide has a mental health conditionOne of many common myths about suicide is that only people with mental health conditions have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. Describing a suicide attempt as “successful” is also problematic, as taking one’s life is not a positive achievement. “Failed suicide attempt” can suggest that surviving isn’t the best outcome or that there’s something lacking in the character or willpower of the attempter. Given these factors, when referring to suicide, appropriate language includes “died by suicide,” “fatal suicide attempt,” “killed herself” or “took his own life,” experts said. Acceptable shorthand ways to communicate not dying from an attempt include “nonfatal suicide attempt” or simply “suicide attempt.”Using more compassionate language to discuss suicide can also improve empathy and strategies for reducing suicide risk, experts said.

For Harun Farocki, even as visual media raced from film strips to computers, one thing remained constant: Pictures reveal more than they intend to. Naming the ideologies embedded in workaday images was Farocki’s life’s work. The German filmmaker and artist was born in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1944 to an Indian father and German mother, lived in a divided Germany, and died in 2014, in a booming, unified Berlin. His meticulous style of essay film, combining found images and formidably researched texts, has become essential to the cinematic tool kit. Eight of his works on the perennial theme of war, curated by Antje Ehmann, an artist and Farocki’s widow, are on view at Greene Naftali.

The result was a drop in average temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere by roughly one degree Fahrenheit in the year that followed. Global temperatures have hit record highs for 13 months in a row, unleashing violent weather, deadly heat waves and raising sea levels. CNN —On Sunday, England will face Serbia in its first game of the Euro 2024 championship, hosted by Germany. Since then, the FA, the European football association UEFA and FIFA , the sport’s international governing body, have visibly upped their anti-racism game. One might conclude, for instance, that Monday’s court decision in Spain meting out prison sentences to three Valencia fans for hurling racial insults, is evidence of European soccer’s new, tougher line against racism. Saka knows UEFA observers will be on duty at every Euro 2024 match and will be on the lookout for racist incidents. I see it as an attempt by professionals who should know better to make a Black player carry the can for a disappointing performance by the whole team.
