But never one to be overshadowed, Lady Gaga, then 23, made some pop culture history of her own that night. While singing "Paparazzi," blood poured out from under the artists' leotard. “I’m your biggest fan, I’ll follow you until you love me,” Gaga wailed desperately, her once-pristine outfit now daubed in scarlet. “I think Lady Gaga is the best performer of our generation.” The “Drivers License” singer appeared to take notes. As well as taking home the Best New Artist trophy in 2009, Gaga went on to win another two, for Best Special Effects and Best Art Direction.

CNN —Traditionally, women considered “demure” behave in a way that is modest, reserved and inoffensive to the point that they’re barely visible. “That’s the joke!”The satire is clearest in a clip in which she asserts that she’s going to behave in a demure, mindful way while going out on the Las Vegas Strip. Famously worn by Beyoncé and Jennifer Aniston, the triangle top was inherently Brat two decades before “Brat girl summer” was officially coined. The triangle spawned offshoots too — its sister, the scarf top, was suggestively tied into a bra by Christina Aguilera. Hats may follow horses around the world, from the Kentucky Derby to the Dubai World Cup and the Hong Kong Cup, but nothing tops the … well, toppers at Ascot, founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. Perhaps it’s because of “My Fair Lady” and the extraordinary black and white lace hat Cecil Beaton created for Eliza Doolittle when she made her Ascot debut. Or maybe it’s thanks to Queen Elizabeth II, whose twin passions for horses and hats reached their apex at Ascot. “To err on the side of extravagance as opposed to modesty is a joy for everyone,” said the milliner Stephen Jones, who reported that he once made an Ascot hat out of feathers for Jasmine Guinness, the aristo-model, in the shape of a feathered pinwheel about two feet high. “There are so few rules in dressing anymore that to dress up is part of the reason for going to Ascot.

I lost my hair. Then I found myself.

For more than a year, I had been dealing with my progressive hair loss and clamoring for some sort of control. I launched into the story of my hair loss journey, attempting to convey the stress and uncertainty that had defined the past year. I purchased a long brown human hair wig that initially looked natural in the shop lighting. I learned I had a lot to learn; there was a whole "wearing hair" subculture with special lingo that I knew nothing about. I accepted that I have hair loss and I'm aging, and one day, I'll look in the mirror, and it won't be just my hair that's changed.

Shirley Conran, the industrious and proliferous British author whose 1982 novel, “Lace,” was a tale of female autonomy disguised as a bonkbuster (to use the British term for a steamy best seller) that made her a millionaire and introduced the lowly goldfish into the erotic canon, died on May 9 in London. She was 91. The cause of her death, in a hospital, was pneumonia, her son Jasper Conran said. She was also the author of “Superwoman,” a witty and proudly feminist primer on household management. The title was ironic, Ms. Conran wrote: “A Superwoman isn’t a woman who can do anything, but a woman who avoids doing too much.”Her mantra, “Life is too short to stuff a mushroom,” became a feminist rallying cry, finding its way onto matchbooks, dish towels and throw pillows.
