Andrew Cuomo to the Department of Justice, alleging he made “criminally false statements” during closed-door testimony in June 2024. In the Republican-led committee’s referral, it says Cuomo “knowingly and willfully made materially false statements” to the panel during its investigation into the New York’s Covid-19 response. Cuomo also denied having discussions about the July 6 report being peer reviewed, according to the panel, which said documents show otherwise. The panel said Cuomo was not under oath during his testimony but was required to answer questions truthfully to Congress. Cuomo’s plan to centralize the pandemic response in the governor’s office also has received criticism, including from an independent report commissioned by his successor, Gov.

Former President Donald Trump’s promises that he’ll win New York are more empty bluster than evidence-based prediction. Two statewide Siena polls have also shown Trump performing better than his 2020 vote share in New York State as a whole. But overall, these races include the most competitive around New York State, and all but the 18th are currently represented in Congress by a Republican. Democrats are not concerned about the top of the ticket, but for those down ballot — where Democrats lost five competitive House races here in 2022 — this election is a chance to earn back what was once theirs. “Progressive state issues like bail reform and congestion pricing remain challenging for Democrats in the New York suburbs,” longtime New York Republican operative Matt Coleman said.

At trial Thursday, defense lawyer Andrew Baldwin asked the clerk, Kathy Shank, if his client was trying to "assist" the investigation. And he said the information Allen provided to authorities days later was marked as cleared when it shouldn’t have been. Allen provided a similar account, according to former Delphi Police Chief Steve Mullin, who conducted the interview, though Allen said he’d arrived at the trail at noon and left at 1:30 p.m. When Mullin showed Allen a photo of the “bridge guy,” the former chief testified, Allen responded: “If the picture was taken with the girl’s camera, there was no way it could be him,” Mullin testified. Bond market investors are having trouble figuring out an economy that looks good from 30,000 feet, but less so closer to the ground. Whether it's payrolls, gross domestic product or retail sales, or a host of other measures, growth looks solid, at the very least. On Wall Street, the general view was of concern: The Beige Book "showed no material improvement in a generally bleak outlook," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote. However, if growth deteriorates, as the Beige Book indicates it has, that likely would push the Fed towards more reductions. "Despite recent stronger-than-expected data on U.S. employment, retail sales, and consumer inflation, the Fed's latest Beige Book signals a still weakening economy."

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — When schools here reopen for the first time since Hurricane Helene unleashed a frightening deluge on western North Carolina, teachers won’t simply pick up where they left off in their lesson plans. While all Asheville City Schools students and staff members have been accounted for, they are grieving the deaths of other members of their community. “We’re not going to be able to just jump right into academics,” Asheville City Schools chief of staff Kim Dechant said. One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.
