Yoshihiro Uchida, Peerless Judo Coach, Is Dead at 104
  + stars: | 2024-07-06 | by ( Clay Risen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Yoshihiro Uchida, the longtime San Jose State University coach who helped establish judo as one of the most popular martial arts in America — and who was widely regarded as the best college judo coach in history — died on June 27 at his home in Saratoga, Calif. The son of Japanese immigrants, Uchida, who went by the nickname Yosh, began coaching judo at San Jose State in the 1940s, while he was still a student there. Americans had long incorporated elements of judo into other combat sports, and returning soldiers from the Pacific Theater brought a new level of interest in martial arts to the country. Uchida, who had been practicing judo since he was 10, despaired over the quality of the training available, especially at the higher levels. Working with a judo coach at the University of California, Berkeley, he established standards for competition, including weight classes, and in 1953 won approval from the Amateur Athletic Union.

Tu Lam, a former Special Forces soldier, rates the fighting techniques Keanu Reeves uses in the "John Wick" movies. He talks about judo and jujitsu, sniper techniques, and the ways public missions are handled in "John Wick" (2014), with Alfie Allen, Willem Dafoe, and John Leguizamo. He explains how suppressors work, the best ways to handle a knife, and how to turn anything in a room into a weapon, as seen in "John Wick: Chapter 2" (2017), with Common, Ruby Rose, and Laurence Fishburne. He compares his own experiences with urban shootouts, working with military dogs, and fighting on a motorcycle to "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum" (2019), with Halle Berry, Ian McShane, and Anjelica Huston. Finally, he breaks down defensive driving, clearing a room, and fighting on stairs in "John Wick: Chapter 4" (2023), with Bill Skarsgård and Donnie Yen.

Berlusconi, Cicchitto said, was accompanying Putin on a hunting trip in the Russian countryside when Putin spotted a pair of deer. After shooting the deers, Putin told Berlusconi he would prepare an extraordinary meal with it, per Cicchitto's recount. According to Cicchitto, Putin proceeded to cut open one of the deer's body with a hunting knife. Berlusconi might have balked at Putin's culinary offering, but the former Italian prime minister shared a close relationship with Putin. In fact, eating a deer's heart is probably not that strange once you consider what else Putin has done with animals, per prior accounts.

Literally and figuratively, Putin was telling Russians — who would soon vote in a presidential election — that he was the man to protect them. Once in office, attack after attack gave him the pretext to dismantle democracy brick by brick. Once in office, attack after attack gave him the pretext to dismantle democracy brick by brick. Patrushev, incidentally, now heads the national security council, and as I recently wrote, is a possible successor to Putin. TOKYO (AP) — An executive at Japanese publishing house Kadokawa was found guilty Tuesday of bribing a former Tokyo Olympics organizing committee member. Toshiyuki Yoshihara, charged with paying 69 million yen ($463,000) to Haruyuki Takahashi, was given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for four years. The punishment was suspended because Yoshihara had expressed remorse, and his wife had promised to watch over him, Nakao said. At the center of the scandal is Takahashi, a former executive at advertising company Dentsu, who joined the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee in 2014, and had great influence in arranging sponsorships for the Games.
