A pig has tested positive for H5N1 bird flu in a backyard farm in Oregon. The H5N1 bird flu was detected in a pig in Oregon, the first instance of a swine infection in the US, officials announced on Wednesday. Pigs get both bird flu viruses and human flu viruses, making them a genetic mixing bowl where H5N1 could gain genetic mutations that help it spread between humans. AdvertisementWhy pig infection could be a tipping pointPigs play host to both bird flu viruses and human flu viruses. Inside a pig, the H5N1 bird flu virus could pick up genetic mutations that help it adapt to better infect human bodies.

Census data released on October 17 indicates that New York recorded the highest rate of people moving out of all 50 states. Business Insider calculated each state's net moving rate by comparing the number of people who moved into and out of each state per 1,000 people. The states people move out of the mostOf all 50 states, New York ranks last with a net moving rate of -9.23. But because of its larger population and the greater number of movers into the Golden State, California's net migration rate lands right after Louisiana's. North Dakota — which has about 780,000 residents to New York's 20 million — had the highest net migration rate at 17.55.

An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

Jackie Cuevas shares email tips to avoid sharing personal or sensitive information at work. Cuevas advises against using targeted words in emails to prevent unintended HR issues. If you're buying lunch for yourself and your coworker, don't email them your credit card number. Words like 'bullying,' 'I'm being harassed,' or even 'name-calling' are targeted words, and when you use them, HR will investigate further. I don't advise using company time and property to say, 'Hey (coworker's name), you were such a b—in that meeting.'

It’s a feeling permeating the heavily Jewish neighborhood — and one that has affected how the swing-state community has processed the 2024 election. Amid a somber anniversary and with Election Day on the horizon, concerns about rising antisemitism are at the forefront of many voters’ minds. “I don’t believe a word Trump says, period, much less how he is trying to court Jewish voters. Republicans are aiming to make inroads with Jewish voters and chip away at the margins, with groups including the Republican Jewish Coalition spending big on ads like one featuring three Jewish women discussing antisemitism at an iconic Jewish deli in the Philadelphia suburbs. He says the Jewish community has felt a “political awakening” after the terror attacks on Oct. 7, and if that does not manifest in the presidential race, there could be signs of it in down-ballot races.

Astronomers have never detected dark matter, but they believe it makes up about 85% of the total matter in the universe. Meanwhile, the existence of dark energy helps researchers explain why the universe is expanding — and why that expansion is speeding up. A prime example is the European Space Agency’s wide-angle Euclid telescope that launched in 2023 to investigate the riddles of dark energy and dark matter. Euclid this week delivered the first piece of a cosmic map — containing about 100 million stars and galaxies — that will take six years to create. These stunning 3D observations may help scientists see how dark matter warps light and curves space across galaxies.

CNN —NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on Friday called for an investigation into a Wall Street Journal report that SpaceX founder and Donald Trump ally Elon Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin have been in “regular contact” since late 2022. Musk also held his own town halls last week in Pennsylvania, where he urged voters to support Trump and promoted several debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. The two have publicly discussed a potential government role for Musk. In recent days, Musk also offered splashy, $1 million daily sweepstakes for swing-state voters that has drawn scrutiny from the US Justice Department. Despite a warning from the Justice Department that the payments might be illegal, Musk’s super PAC awarded two $1 million prizes to registered voters in Michigan and Wisconsin on Thursday.

There was a time, though, when any Yankees player on his way to face the Dodgers could have walked. Six months later, the Los Angeles Dodgers played their first ever game, beating the San Francisco Giants 6-5 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

My husband and I loved living in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo near Washington, DC. But the convenience of condo life came with some challenges, especially once we retired and became grandparents. It also became an art studio once my husband retired and leaned into his oil-painting hobby. It has a huge kitchen that flows into a dining area and living room — a perfect space for large gatherings. During the first holiday dinner at our new house, the kids went down to the basement to play by themselves while the adults stayed upstairs and relaxed in our huge living space.
