The call came in around 4 p.m., while Adam Abo Sheriah was still at work in his pharmacy in New Jersey. It took a few minutes for Adam to understand: His uncle’s home in Gaza City had been hit by Israeli airstrikes. His parents and his brother’s wife and children were inside, taking shelter after their own homes were bombed. Also struck nearby was a block of multifamily buildings in a neighborhood of Gaza City, home to many relatives and their families, who were hunkered down together. His mind swirling with questions, he got in his car and started driving nowhere in particular.

A small island controlled by Taiwan a few miles off China’s coast lived for decades in constant readiness for war. At one point in 1958, troops there hunkered in bunkers as Communist forces rained hundreds of thousands of shells on them. These days, the island, Kinmen, has become a hub of Taiwan’s commerce with China and its abandoned, weatherworn fortifications are tourist sites. Eight ferries a day take Taiwanese businesspeople and visitors from Kinmen to mainland China. But the sea around Kinmen has again turned tense after two Chinese men onboard a speedboat died in the area last month while trying to flee a Taiwanese Coast Guard vessel.

Unsurprisingly, several flashing indicators suggest that investors are feeling good about the market:• CNN’s Fear & Greed Index: The indicator, which measures seven barometers of market sentiment including the VIX, Wall Street’s most well-known measure of expected stock volatility, is in “greed” territory. Market sentiment is often seen as a contrarian indicator. That means that when the herd is optimistic, money managers take it as a sign that stocks will fall, and vice versa. A closely watched gauge of US wholesale inflation rose at its fastest pace in months, according to new data released Thursday. In February, car sales climbed 1.8%, purchases of electronics and appliances increased 1.5% and sales at restaurants rose 0.4%.

Remembering life in the earliest days of the pandemic shutdowns can feel like trying to conjure an apocalyptic dream: the empty streetscapes, the shrieking ambulances, the sudden scramble to find toilet paper and hand sanitizer. As the fourth anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic approaches, The Times wants to know: When did the pandemic hit home for you? What do you remember thinking, feeling and seeing in those turbulent early days of March 2020? Do you still have photos on your camera roll from your first time wearing a mask, or heading to work as an essential employee while the rest of the world hunkered down? Or perhaps the reality of the pandemic came on suddenly, as you or a loved one got sick.

Investors, including hedge funds, hurtled term sheets at founders to beat the competition, skipping the usual diligence along the way. They represent opposite corners at the University of Michigan, two sides of student activism who have hunkered down and almost never communicate. Salma Hamamy is one of the most prominent faces of the pro-Palestinian movement on campus. “One, two, three, four, open up the prison doors!” she shouts, bullhorn in hand, as she leads anti-Israel rallies in front of crowds of fellow students. “Five, six, seven, eight, Israel is a terrorist state!” Ms. Hamamy has helped lead over 20 protests since Hamas’s deadly attacks against Israel on Oct. 7 and the resulting bombardment of Gaza. As she booms out calls for an end to war, or rails against a university administration that she believes has been tone deaf toward Palestinians, she knows she can look into the audience and find a familiar, though vexing, face: Josh Brown, a fellow student and Ms. Hamamy’s opposite in nearly every way.

CNN —An unusually strong cold front slammed Cuba’s north coast on Tuesday, with white-capped waves flooding streets with seawater, causing scattered power outages and littering the capital Havana with blowing trash and downed branches. People navigate through a flooded street on a raft in Havana, on February 6, 2024. Rising sea levels threaten some coastal cities like Havana and could completely wipe from the map low-lying states in parts of the South Pacific Ocean.

Winter turned its icy glare on the U.S. this week, blanketing cities and states from east to west with snow and sending temperatures into an Arctic spiral. Heavy lake-effect snow shut down city hall, canceled school in several districts and led to travel bans across multiple suburbs. Blades of grass hardened into icicles as snow fell and temperatures dropped in Houston, Texas. Pedestrians braved the cold while walking in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, and children sailed down snow drifts at the U.S. Capitol in Washington. And steam rising off of Lake Michigan in Chicago drew would-be photographers, bundled up and enjoying the view as winter settled in.

Plunging temperatures have put much of the country in a deep freeze this holiday weekend, combining with snow, freezing rain, ice or gusty winds in some places to endanger nearly 100 million people from Northern California to coastal Maine. Forecasters said hundreds of records gauging the cold could be broken this week, as frigid air gripped a huge swath of the nation, including southern cities like Dallas, Memphis and Little Rock, Ark. Other places braced for sleet or snow, with Buffalo, N.Y., expecting up to two feet of snow. While some people hunkered down indoors, stocking up on food and firewood, others braved the cold to attend events for the Iowa caucuses, cheer on their favorite teams at the Chiefs-Dolphins N.F.L. playoff game or go skiing, among other activities.

“First in war — first in peace — and first in the hearts of his countrymen,” Lee wrote of Washington. Joe Biden is 81, the oldest president ever and one who is struggling with John Adams-level unpopularity. On Friday afternoon the US Supreme Court announced it would hear arguments on the case February 8. Trump responded by accusing Biden of “pathetic fearmongering.”It’s been three years since Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6. The name came from a letter Gordon sent to a friend explaining “how she, as a 350-pound woman, would like to be addressed.”“Just say fat,” Gordon reads from her essay in the film.

A weeklong cease-fire in Gaza collapsed on Friday morning after Israel said Hamas had fired rockets toward Israel in the hours before the truce was set to expire, and Israel responded with strikes on the territory. But early Friday, shortly before the truce was set to end, Israel’s military said on the social media site X that it had intercepted a projectile fired from Gaza. Nonetheless, minutes after the 7 a.m. deadline passed, Israel announced that it was restarting operations in Gaza. Steel coils are waiting for delivery at the storage and distribution facility of German steel maker ThyssenKrupp in Duisburg, Germany, November 16, 2023. Scholz's three-way coalition is reeling from a court ruling last week that wiped 60 billion euros ($65 billion) from the budget at a stroke and forced it to freeze most new spending commitments, delaying talks on the 2024 budget. LOSS OF CONFIDENCEGermany's steel sector added its voice to the growing jitters, warning that the court ruling had put a question mark over more than 40 billion euros in planned investments. "I find it correct that the consequences of the constitutional court ruling ... are checked carefully," Scholz told a news conference. Scholz also described this as conceivable, participants at the meeting told Reuters, adding that the court ruling put the coalition into a difficult situation but it could be resolved.

The pandas, accompanied by three zookeepers, will travel to a reserve in China’s mountainous Sichuan province, where an estimated 1,800 pandas are still found in the wild, according to the National Zoo. "It's a moment of joy because this is one more step in 50 years of a successful giant panda conservation program and hopefully the beginning of 50 more years of successful giant panda conservation," she said. Mei Xiang, 25, and Tian Tian, 26, arrived at the National Zoo in 2000. The trio, made famous by the zoo's "Giant Panda Cam" with more than 100 million views, were part of a fading legacy in which giant pandas served as animal ambassadors. Kimberly Blalock, a young visitor at the National Zoo on Tuesday, was among the last to see the pandas on display in Washington.
