This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. In a letter to investors seen by Business Insider, he said his short bets against companies he believed were overvalued went haywire. Einhorn did not name the four short positions in the letter that helped drag the entire short book down 25.6% last year but called the performance "disgusting." The short positions were not new ones. The firm declined to identify the four positions when asked by Business Insider or offer any additional comment on the letter.

Just like the cloud transformed every software category, we think AI is one such transformational shift. Therefore, this notion of Copilots that we're introducing is really going to be revolutionary in terms of driving productivity and communication. Milton Friedman once famously said: "the business of business is business." One is, is the business of business just business? So, I think AI can actually be very helpful in many ways to be a little more empathetic and more understanding of the world.

Friday's jobs report came in well above expectations, leading markets to see higher odds of another rate hike. AdvertisementAdvertisementAfter the red-hot September jobs report, markets are pricing in higher odds for the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates at the November meeting. Investors are now staring down the prospect of higher for longer interest rates. "Bond markets are reflecting an outlook for better growth as rates move higher and equities are digesting an environment where earnings might be better, but higher rates are a headwind to valuation." Bank of America strategists, for their part, warned that stocks have room to fall further before the Fed pulls back on interest rates.

One of the underlying issues in the free speech debate is the unequal distribution of power. Frymer suggested that ultimatelyWe can’t consider free speech without at least some understanding of power. We can’t assume in all contexts that the truth will ever come out; unregulated speech does not mean free speech. The framing in the current debate over free speech and the First Amendment, Post contends, is dangerously off-kilter. Post makes the case that there is “a widespread tendency to conceptualize the problem as one of free speech.

It feels dangerous to write about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: In the lag time between when I put the finishing touches on this and when it becomes publicly available, I could be a conspiracy theory or two behind. He’s a crank who cranks out whoppers the way Taylor Swift disgorges perfect pop songs. Kennedy is where paranoia meets legacy admissions. It’s an exaggeration of inequities and injustices that really do exist, and it simplifies a maddeningly complex world. Ranting about George Soros or Anthony Fauci feels a whole lot better than raging at the vicissitudes of fate.

SILVER NITRATE, by Silvia Moreno-GarciaSilvia Moreno-Garcia’s dexterity with genre — oscillating between horror, thriller, crime and gothic — is well known by now, as is her penchant for mashing them with historical Mexican settings. Her stories have ranged from a quest narrative and romance in an alternate 1920s Mexico to a reimagining of H.G. She has three loves: horror movies, her white Volkswagen and her childhood friend Tristán Abascal, a tall, handsome, washed-up actor. When he reaches out to reconnect, it means he’s between relationships; this time he also needs to borrow her car. The plot is set into motion only after a long conversation between the two friends and Abel Urueta, Tristán’s neighbor and a once-famous Mexican horror film director.

The US even reminded everyone just how influential the buck is when it effectively froze Russia out of the global financial system with sanctions last year. Becoming the issuer of the global reserve currency is about trust. The US has controlled the global reserve currency for 102 years — giving it a special status in the world economy. Still, given that the country controlling the global reserve currency holds that status of an average of 94 years, history seems to indicate it's high time for a successor. Why shouldn't the financial world resemble something closer to the mosaic of cultures, politics, and nations that exists today?

The sun is about to enter a peak activity period, letting off space weather-causing solar flares. These solar flares aren't dangerous but have caused sporadic radio blackouts on Earth. A few powerful solar flares have already sent space weather towards our planet in recent months. How solar flares can lead to radio blackoutsDuring certain space weather events, such as solar flares, solar energetic particles travel down geomagnetic field lines in the polar regions.

In a regular cycle, the ovaries make estrogen to nurture an egg for release and thicken the uterine lining for its arrival, Dr. Munro said. Think of the uterine lining “like grass in your garden,” Dr. Munro said. Or, for other women, there might be so little estrogen that the uterine lining hasn’t grown much, leading only to some light spotting. One of the telltale signs of endometrial hyperplasia, Dr. Kapoor said, is heavy periods. In cases where women have immensely heavy periods, Dr. Munro said, they might also experience iron deficiency and anemia, which in turn can be connected to other common menopause symptoms, including fatigue and brain fog.

Keeley (Juno Temple) starts her own PR agency with funding from an elite venture capital firm. To her dismay, the venture firm installs a chief financial officer to keep watch over the agency and its freewheeling founder. Even Edelman, the world's largest PR firm, cracked $1 billion in revenue after 70 years in business only last year. "The logic that a PR agency would be a good VC deal is ratchet," said Kathy Osborne, founder of Kamel PR. Overnight, the venture firm fires Keeley's staff and shuts down the company, without so much as a call to Keeley.

A time-lapse video shows the sun getting more chaotic over the past four years. That's because solar activity could impact Earth, creating bursts of electromagnetic energy that can affect everything from the power grid to GPS signals. NOAA/InsiderAs solar activity ramps up, more sunspots and eruptions have been appearing on the sun's surface, sending solar winds into the universe that can hit our planet. Here's what this looks like:In the time-lapse video, solar flares appear as an intense brightening of a region on the sun. Meanwhile, the sun's surface appears gradually less homogenous, indicating more magnetic activity at the surface.

The result is a housing market that's fundamentally out of whack. The housing market has changed for good — and with the benefit of time-earned wisdom, we can pinpoint the moment it entered a new era. Two big things happened during the initial response to the pandemic that launched the housing market past the point of no return. Both factors have propelled competition in the housing market to new heights and made it challenging for would-be buyers to find their footing. Some aspects of the pandemic-era housing market that once seemed "odd" are increasingly becoming new norms.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggested that a government agency should be formed to oversee AI safety. Such an agency could give licenses to companies for advanced AI work — and revoke them. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told a Senate panel on Tuesday that there should be an agency to police AI projects that operate "above a certain scale of capabilities." "I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong," Altman said during in the hearing. Altman, 38, is one of its founders, along with Elon Musk, who has since parted ways with the organization.
President Joe Biden is meeting Congressional leaders on Tuesday to try to hash out a compromise to raise the debt limit and avoid a catastrophic default. A regulatory filing on Friday from the family office of George Soros showed the 92-year old billionaire investor has sold his entire stake in Tesla. Soros bought shares in the electric vehicle maker, run by Elon Musk, in 2022, as well as convertible bonds in 2018. Soros wasn't alone in pulling out of some of the pandemic-era darlings in the first three months of the year. Friday's regulatory filing showed he loaded up on other big tech stocks, including Netflix, Uber, chipmaker Qualcomm and cloud-based data company Snowflake - which fellow 92-year old investor Warren Buffett bought into back in 2020.
And it's becoming increasingly clear that the bond market is reading the economic tea leaves all wrong. On the economic side, the bond market view would probably look something like the Fed's latest GDP projections. So if the bond market ends up being right about the economy, there would be a serious, ugly wake-up call for the stock market. I don't think the Wall Street aphorism about the bond market being "right" holds up this time. On the other hand, the bond market would take it squarely on the chin.
For many months now, I've been having conversations and writing about economic indicators that all point to a recession. The US is in the midst of a "freight recession," meaning there's fewer trucks delivering goods around the country. In a call last week, JB Hunt reported a bad earnings miss, and executives said a recovery for trucking looks uncertain. Outside the trucking sector, the classic recession indicators are blaring, too:The Conference Board's Leading Economic Index just dipped for the 12th consecutive month. The New York Fed's Recession Probabilities Model puts the odds of a downturn at 57%, the highest mark since 1982.
A nationwide freight slowdown has helped cut U.S. diesel prices by half from last year’s record, raising concerns that parts of the world’s largest economy have begun to slow. Wholesale diesel recently fell to $2.65 a gallon in New York Harbor, down from $5.34 last May, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent commodity markets haywire and turned prices advertised at gas stations into street-level reminders of inflation’s 40-year highs. Record diesel costs made it more expensive to operate excavators at construction sites, run machinery on farms, and haul goods from ports, rail yards or factory floors.
Blue checks were reinstated on several accounts but users said they hadn't paid for them. Rapper Lil Nas X, whose blue check remained, tweeted that he didn't pay for Twitter Blue. Some users who had died, including Kobe Bryant and Anthony Bourdain, had blue checks on their profiles. The ongoing confusion highlights the challenges Musk has faced in getting people to sign up for Twitter Blue. Bloomberg reported that traffic data showed only 4% of people who visited the Twitter Blue sales website in March subscribed.
Wilmington, Delaware CNN —Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation trial against Fox News over the right-wing network’s promotion of debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election. The high-stakes trial — which will put a spotlight on Fox’s 2020 election denialism and the role of disinformation in American politics — is expected to last about six weeks. The case revolves around Fox’s decision, after Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, to allow haywire conspiracy theories about Dominion onto its airwaves. Dominion has argued that Fox destroyed its reputation as a trusted voting technology company by repeatedly amplifying these false claims. Fox News says it didn’t defame Dominion and maintains that it is still “proud” of its 2020 election coverage.
How bad is the banking crisis?
  + stars: | 2023-03-20 | by ( Spriha Srivastava | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +7 min
The Fed along with five other central banks announced coordinated action to reassure global banks. To make sense of those acronyms, GFC refers to the global financial crisis of 2007 to 2009, EZ crisis is the Eurozone crisis of 2009 onwards, temper tantrum likely refers to the taper tantrum of 2013, and the Covid 3/20 shock is when global markets went haywire in the early stages of the pandemic. So, you might be wondering: Just how bad is the banking crisis? "It means the banking crisis we've seen over the past few weeks has started a new chapter rather than reaching its ending." After the 2008 financial crisis, the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) made it necessary for all European banks to issue CoCo bonds.
Peter Tuchman has been at the New York Stock Exchange for almost 38 years and is the most-photographed trader on Wall Street. On March 10, when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed, "shit was really hitting the fan," he told Insider. Tuchman said when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed last week "shit was really hitting the fan." I watch at every given second what's going on with all that information," he said, gesturing at the hundreds of monitors around us.
