“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (now in theaters) is the first film in that franchise not directed by Steven Spielberg, who developed the character all those years ago with George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, as well as the screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Yet the handoff of directorial duties to James Mangold doesn’t feel like a strain, because Spielberg established the character of the globe-trotting archaeologist and the style of his cinematic escapades so adroitly over the first four films. In fact, he set them in stone in the very first sequence of the very first movie — as we can see in a shot-by-shot look that classic sequence today. We first see Indiana Jones less than 30 seconds into 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — but it’s a carefully prepared hero entrance, holding back Harrison Ford’s distinctive visage as long as possible. Instead, we first see him from the back, in a frame that nevertheless introduces the character and his distinctive iconography (his hat, bullwhip and jacket).

June 23 (Reuters) - U.S. business activity fell to a three-month low in June as services growth eased for the first time this year and the contraction in the manufacturing sector deepened, closely watched survey data out Friday showed. Nonetheless, it was the fifth straight month that the PMI remained above 50, indicating growth in the private sector. The survey's flash services sector PMI fell to 54.1 from 54.9 in May. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the services PMI would ease to 54.0. Its flash manufacturing PMI dropped to 46.3 from 48.4 in May and was weaker than economists' median forecast of 48.5.

The pullback by banks is raising the hopes of those in the private credit industry. Some panelists and others who spoke in the hallways of the event suggested that there was a large-scale handoff from private equity to private credit. Many private-equity firms are scrambling to raise private credit funds to take advantage. "I don't think this is the end of private equity, but the environment certainly favors private credit," he said. And that will show up in lower returns for private credit funds, she said.
Apple stock is set to report its second-quarter earnings results after the market close on Thursday. From solid iPhone demand to the launch of a massive stock buyback, a lot is expected from the largest company in the world. The billionaire founders of the legendary investment giant KKR & Co. are poised to pull off a rare feat: a drama-free handoff of the firm’s leadership to two younger partners. Now, the new leaders are trying to pull off a daunting feat of their own: complete the transformation of KKR from a buyout firm still sometimes known as the pirate protagonists of the 1989 book “Barbarians at the Gate” into a financial empire with big businesses in areas like credit and real estate. The co-CEOs have a plan to double earnings over the next five years.
The Arctic Council was created in 1996 to discuss issues affecting the polar region, ranging from pollution to local economic development to search-and-rescue missions. The Arctic Council comprises the eight Arctic states of Russia, the United States, Canada, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Denmark. Russia's possible degree of involvement with the Council once Norway takes over is still unclear. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had earlier extended an invitation to Arctic officials to attend a transition ceremony in Salekhard, Siberia. Russian Arctic Ambassador Nikolay Korchunov, chair of the Senior Arctic Officials on the council, told Reuters the transition would "presuppose active and responsible participation of all Arctic Council member states in this preparatory process."

Reed Hastings' departure as co-CEO does little to change how analysts view Netflix , or the company's ability to accomplish its long-term strategies, analysts say. The streaming giant announced Thursday that founder Reed Hastings would give up his role after more than two decades and serve as executive chairman. The move came along with quarterly results that fell short of earnings estimates but showed subscriber numbers that far surpassed expectations . "The company's focus, in our view, has always been an underappreciated differentiator and we expect that focus to remain under new leadership." Despite the title change and a step back from day-to-day operations, analysts anticipate that Hastings will continue to be involved in longer-term decision-making.

With a game on the line against the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday, the Detroit Lions called a play that was as brilliant as it was unusual. Quarterback Jared Goff faked a handoff, dropped back and then threw the ball…to the team’s star offensive lineman. Tackle Penei Sewell, who lined up as an eligible receiver on the play, hauled in the pass to convert the first down and seal a victory over one of the NFC’s top teams. The win cemented the Lions’ status as not only one of the NFL’s hottest teams—but also the most fun.

The astronauts — NASA’s Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines and Jessica Watkins, as well as Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti with the European Space Agency — were scheduled to depart from the space station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule Thursday morning. Aerospace company SpaceX developed the Crew Dragon spacecraft under a $2.6 billion contract with NASA as part of the Commercial Crew Program. SpaceX renewed orbital human spaceflight capabilities from US soil in 2020 with the launch of its Demo-2 mission, which carried two NASA astronauts to the space station. The Crew-4 astronauts’ return to Earth comes less than a week after the Crew-5 astronauts arrived on a separate SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. Since SpaceX developed the Crew Dragon under a fixed-price commercial contract, however, it retains ownership over the vehicle.
