AASUM, Denmark — In a village in central Denmark, archeologists made a landmark discovery that could hold important clues to the Viking era: a burial ground, containing some 50 “exceptionally well-preserved” skeletons. “This is such an exciting find because we found these skeletons that are so very, very well preserved,” said archeologist Michael Borre Lundø, who led the six-month dig. The site was discovered last year during a routine survey, ahead of power line renovation work on the outskirts of the village of Aasum, 3 miles northeast of Odense, Denmark’s third-largest city. Experts hope to conduct DNA analyses and possibly reconstruct detailed life histories, as well as look into social patterns in the Viking Age, such as kinship, migration patterns and more. “This opens a whole new toolbox for scientific discovery,” said Borre Lundø as he stood on the muddy, wind-swept excavation site.

CNN —Archaeologists in Denmark have unearthed more than 50 “exceptionally well preserved” skeletons in a large Viking-era burial ground in the east of the country. The skeletons were buried alongside artifacts from far beyond Denmark’s borders, suggesting Vikings traveled extensively for trade, according to the team from the museum. The conditions at the site are what helped keep the skeletons in such good shape, he said. “We had no clue that there was going to be a burial ground with Viking skeletons there,” Lundø said. The researchers recovered animal and microbe DNA from the kefir cheese discovered on the Tarim Basin mummies. A former CIA officer was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison for drugging and sexually abusing and filming multiple women without their consent, in one of the most serious misconduct cases in the agency's history. House lawmakers in Washington have the signatures they need to force a vote on a bill to eliminate rules that reduce Social Security benefits for certain retirees who also receive pension income. On Thursday morning, Reps. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., and Garret Graves, R-La., marked the 206 signatures a discharge petition had thus far collected with a press conference outside the Capitol building alongside organizations representing police, firefighters, postal workers, teachers and other government employees often affected by those rules. By Thursday afternoon, the number of signatures had climbed to 218, enough to force a vote on the bill. The bipartisan bill — the Social Security Fairness Act — would repeal rules known as the Windfall Elimination Provision, or WEP, and the Government Pension Offset, or GPO, that currently reduce Social Security benefits for almost 3 million Americans. "This is a situation where you have some of the most important occupations, some of the most important contributors to our community, that are being discriminated against," he said.
