Paris CNN —French anti-terror authorities are investigating a suspected arson attack on a synagogue Saturday morning that injured a police officer, the latest in a series of attacks in recent months that have unsettled France’s Jews. The incident took place in La Grande-Motte, a southern seaside town not far from Montpellier. Observant Jews typically go to synagogue on Saturday morning to celebrate the Sabbath. French anti-terrorism prosecutors confirmed in an email to CNN that they had taken charge of the investigation. Texas and a coalition of Republican-led states on Friday sued President Joe Biden’s administration over a new program that offers a path to citizenship for immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally and are now married to U.S. citizens. America First Legal, an organization led by Trump adviser Stephen Miller, served as co-counsel in the lawsuit alongside Texas and 15 other states with Republican attorneys general. Miller, a driving force behind Trump’s restrictive policies during his 2017-2021 presidency, called the Biden program “brazenly unlawful” in a statement. PICACHO, Ariz. — How long does it take a large desert tortoise to get to the other side of a southern Arizona highway? It’s still a mystery, after a state Department of Public Safety trooper recently helped rescue an escaped sulcata tortoise that was attempting to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho. A motorist contacted authorities on July 30 to report a tortoise trying to cross the busy highway that’s halfway between Casa Grande and Tucson in Pinal County. Troopers saw the name “Stitch” labeled across the tortoise’s shell and contacted an ostrich ranch that was 3 miles away. According to the Arizona Republic, the ranch confirmed Stitch was one of it resident tortoises and had recently escaped from his habitat.

A British crocodile expert was sentenced Thursday to more than 10 years in prison in Australia after admitting to sexually abusing, torturing and killing dozens of dogs. He filmed videos of himself torturing dogs to death and then shared the videos online under pseudonyms, the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Australia heard. CNN —A tropical depression making its way towards the Florida coast is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Debby Saturday before delivering heavy, flooding rainfall and dangerous storm surge to the state starting this weekend. The storm is expected to enter the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and become Tropical Storm Debby, according to the hurricane center. Tropical storm conditions could begin Saturday night in parts of southwest Florida. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Dry Tortugas and the west coast of the Florida peninsula from East Cape Sable to Boca Grande.
