DALLAS (AP) — Despite inflation and memories of past holiday travel meltdowns, millions of people are expected to hit airports and highways in record numbers over the Thanksgiving break. Sunday will draw the largest crowds with an estimated 2.9 million passengers, which would narrowly eclipse a record set on June 30. Scott Keyes, founder of the travel site Going, is cautiously optimistic that holiday air travel won’t be the same mess. From June through August — when thunderstorms can snarl air traffic — the rate of cancellations fell 18% compared to 2022. The airlines, in turn, have heaped blame on the Federal Aviation Administration, which they say can’t keep up with the growing air traffic.

The National Weather Service warned of hazardous travel on snowy mountain passes and ice on some highways when snow initially melts and then freezes as road temperatures drop. The snow was then forecast to spread across northern Idaho, Montana, northwestern Wyoming and North Dakota into Friday. Some higher elevations in the northern Rockies could see snow totals of 2 feet (61 centimeters) or more. Central Montana will see the worst of the snow, said Matt Ludwig, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Great Falls. Northwestern Wyoming, including Yellowstone National Park, was also under a winter storm warning, the National Weather Service said.

That means more rain in the South and extra storminess in the late winter, Gottschalk said. El Nino often means “unusual severe weather across the state of Florida because of a strong subtropical jet stream,” he said. He pointed to Washington’s paralyzing 2010 Snowmageddon storm that dumped more than 2 feet on the capital region during an El Nino. The Siberian snow cover, El Nino and other factors “indicate an overall mild winter,” he told The Associated Press.

El Niño is one of three phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which tracks water temperature changes in the equatorial Pacific Ocean that can have rippling effects on weather patterns around the globe. A wetter southern tier and a drier northern tier in an outlook for this winter from the Climate Prediction Center have all the fingerprints of an El Niño winter. El Niño winter patterns are less regular in California, the Southwest and the Northeast. The Northeast doesn’t have a well-defined set of expectations during an El Niño winter. A very strong El Niño during the 2015-2016 winter contributed to the warmest winter on record for the US mainland, according to NOAA.

The apparent slippage led to confusion and spurred employees at rival Databricks to suggest online that it was picking up that business. "These cash payments, including the payments we made in 2022, generally represent prepayments for future services which, in many cases, span multiple fiscal periods," Instacart wrote. For both 2021 and 2022, Instacart said it incurred operating expenses tied to the cloud technology of $28 million. Instacart isn't required to disclose its relationship with Databricks, but both companies published recent posts about the implementation on their websites.

CNN —Part of the summit of a mountain in the Austrian state of Tyrol has collapsed, sending more than 100,000 cubic meters of rock crashing into the valley below and triggering mudslides. The geologists have pinned the collapse on the thawing of permafrost, a long-term frozen layer of soil and rocks. When permafrost thaws it can have a destabilizing effect, said Marcia Phillips, permafrost research group leader at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Switzerland. “Water can penetrate deep into rock masses through newly opened clefts, which were previously plugged with permafrost ice,” she told CNN, explaining that this can lead rocks to fracture. But, as human-caused climate change pushes up global temperatures, leading to thawing permafrost and melting snow and glaciers, rockfalls in this region look set to become more common.

"This year's result will go down as one of the largest snowpack years on record in California," said Sean de Guzman, manager of DWR's Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Unit. California's snowpack levels varied by region, with the Southern Sierra snowpack reaching 300% of its April 1 average and the Central Sierra reaching 237% of its April 1 average, officials said. Feb 8 (Reuters) - The private equity owners of Snow Software are exploring a sale that could value the software management solutions company at about $1 billion, including debt, according to people familiar with the matter. Sumeru Equity Partners, Ontario Pension Board, Vitruvian Partners and other investors behind Snow Software have hired investment bank JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) to explore options for the company, the sources said. Based in Stockholm, Sweden and Austin, Texas, Snow Software builds software tools and solutions that help companies obtain the proper licensing for the software they use. Snow Software currently generates annual revenue of about $175 million, according to the sources. Sumeru and Ontario Pension Board joined Vitruvian as shareholders in Snow Software in 2017 with a $120 million investment.

A long-duration ice storm will impact a large swath of the South through Wednesday, with the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area at the center of the threat. The slow-moving storm system is expected to bring freezing rain and accumulating ice to parts of the country extending from Texas to West Virginia. A heavier round of freezing rain is expected to develop Tuesday over central Texas and up through Arkansas into Tennessee. As parts of the South struggle with the winter storm, several cities in the Northeast will continue to wait for snow.
