CNN —For the first time in Rwanda’s history, its health ministry is dealing with an outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – but unlike Ebola, there is no treatment or vaccines for Marburg, and it has a fatality rate of 88%. In addition to sending medical supplies, the World Health Organization said over the weekend that it is deploying a team of seven global experts in hemorrhagic disease to Rwanda who can provide guidance for public health experts on the ground. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that it is also sending experts to Rwanda to help support testing and contact-tracing efforts. There are no cases of Marburg in the United States, and the risk to Americans with this outbreak is low. Unlike in some other sub-Saharan African countries that have dealt with Marburg virus disease, Rwanda has a strong public health system, according to WHO.

Republicans stand a good chance of erasing the Democrats’ narrow 51-49 Senate majority in November, a hard reality that complicates Harris' transition planning. Members of Harris’ transition team have studied that one — the handoff from Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Harris' team is operating under an unusually compressed timeline and is still building the basic apparatus needed to vet potential hires and staff an administration. Last month, Harris' campaign appointed Yohannes Abraham to run the team that is preparing for a transfer of power. He came to his new role with direct experience, having been executive director of Biden’s transition in 2020.

Opinion | Silicon Valley’s MAGA Moment

I co-founded Facebook in college 20 years ago, but I left California and start-up culture behind long ago for public policy and economics. As we sat over scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and whole-wheat toast, I was struck by how many of the wealthiest and most powerful figures in Silicon Valley — including some I knew — were now loudly backing Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump claims that Mark Zuckerberg called him to say that he wouldn’t support a Democrat in November, although Mr. Zuckerberg’s spokesperson denied the claim. It would be easy to write off tech’s rightward drift as nothing more than the rich acting in their economic self-interest, but Silicon Valley has always been driven by profit, and it hasn’t tilted Republican since the 1980s. Even now, it remains largely Democratic, even though even some of Kamala Harris’s strongest Valley supporters worry about how she might approach tech policy.

While the reputation of the US Secret Service is one of precision, vigilance and security, the reality is more complicated – a high-stress, high-intensity workplace beset by management and logistical issues. (The Secret Service is mandated to protect all foreign heads of state while they are on US soil). “Following the events of July 13, the U.S. Secret Service enhanced our protective model for protectees. According to the Secret Service official, the agency’s attrition rate was 10.26% in fiscal year 2022, 8.78% in 2023, and 8.85% for fiscal year 2024 so far. CNN —Astronomers have observed a massive pair of jets releasing from a supermassive black hole 7.5 billion light-years from Earth. The megastructure spans 23 million light-years in length, making these black hole jets the largest ever seen, according to new research. Black hole jets can accelerate radiation and particles close to the speed of light, causing them to glow in wavelengths visible to radio telescopes. The massive black hole jets could help answer both. Martijn Oei (pictured), lead author of the new study, and his colleagues will continue their search for massive black hole jets.

On average, according to the latest CNN Poll of Polls, Harris is ahead by 3 points. Instead, it is a race to 270 electoral votes through the Electoral College. Per CNN’s current race ratings, Harris starts at 225 electoral votes to Trump’s 219. A win in Nebraska’s 2nd District would likely give Harris exactly 270 electoral votes when added to Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The Federal Reserve cut interest rates in its September meeting. With inflation starting to level off and the Fed cutting interest rates in its September 18 meeting, many experts believe rates have only just started dropping. After all, lower rates help consumers save when they borrow money, but they also translate to lower rates on savings accounts and money market accounts. For example, borrowing money at lower rates can make it easier to purchase a home, finance a car, or start a business. Lower interest rates can also help potential homebuyers buy a pricier home, since less of the mortgage payment they qualify for goes toward interest each month.

The Fed cut interest rates in its September meeting, which is the first cut in years. Experts say not to rush to action with your cash savings — but start doing some research. But, the Fed finally cut interest rates by 50 basis points at its meeting on September 18 — the first rate cut since March 2020. This is true now, but it will be just as true if the Fed continues to drop the federal funds rate in the future. However, interest rate increases could lead to having to sell the note on the secondary market at a loss.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that “the Jewish people” would be partially to blame if he loses in November, escalating his persistent campaign trail criticism of Jewish voters and insisting that Democrats hold a “curse” over them. But the former president appeared preoccupied with what he described as ingratitude from Jewish voters, whom he said should be supporting him in greater proportions because of his record on Israel. Still, Trump has repeatedly cast his rival as “anti-Israel” and “anti-Jewish.”“You have to defeat Kamala Harris more than any other people on earth,” Trump said, addressing the Jewish voters in the audience. You want to control your politicians, that’s fine,” Trump said at the Republican Jewish Coalition in December 2015. “I’m a negotiator like you folks, we are negotiators.”But Trump’s open frustration with Jewish voters became a more frequent theme in the aftermath of his 2020 election defeat.

The charges come as Mayor Eric Adams' administration has been under scrutiny from prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan. Oxfam recently released its Best and Worst States to Work in the U.S. report, which considers criteria like minimum wage, paid leave and the ability to organize. "There are vast disparities and access to critical workplace protections that vary by state," says Inimai Chettiar, president of the work-family justice organization A Better Balance. Oxfam then narrowed in on policies that have an outsized effect on women and women of color, specifically, to rank the best states for female employees. Oxfam examined each state's tipped minimum wage, for example, as nearly seven in 10 tipped workers are women, according to the National Women's Law Center. Resident-centered urban cores have lots of housing, public amenities like schools and parks, and local restaurants, shops, and other businesses. The unsexy way to get people downtownBefore cities focus on bringing in visitors, they need to serve their residents, Wesolowski argued. Parks along urban rivers, lakes, canals, and ocean beaches can attract new residents, visitors, and commercial development while serving as a buffer for flooding. Egypt recorded 2,044 train accidents in 2018 and 1,793 the year before, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). In 2021, at least 32 people were killed and 165 injured when two trains collided. In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Take the tariffs the Trump Administration imposed on washing machines in 2018. The washing machine tariffs were part of a broad new tariff regime Trump imposed in an effort to protect American workers from anti-competitive Chinese trade practices. It resulted in what is generally viewed as a “trade war” involving retaliatory tariffs imposed on American goods. The White House gave a rationale similar to the Trump administration when it announced its tariffs.
