Tesla Insurance, launched in 2019 by the electric-car company, has promised policyholders “vastly better” service than rivals, as Tesla chief Elon Musk put it in April 2022. “What do they have, three people answering phone calls?”Complaints about Tesla Insurance are drawing scrutiny from state regulators and the plaintiffs’ bar. And there’s no way to know exactly how many have been made against Tesla Insurance and how its record compares with competitors’. That fall, Tesla launched InsureMyTesla, a new insurance offering for U.S. Tesla owners, in partnership with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. Lester F. Aponte, a Los Angeles attorney who signed up for Tesla Insurance in August, described a maddening ordeal to obtain proof of insurance.

Conservative organization Moms for Liberty faced major setbacks in state and school board elections. Candidates endorsed by the organization suffered widespread defeats, this week. With over 130 endorsed candidates nationwide, most faced losses, some with single-digit support. New Jersey saw only four out of 19 endorsed candidates winning. In April, a Florida school banned an adaptation of Anne Frank's Holocaust diary because Moms for Liberty deemed it "sexually explicit."

Democrats celebrated in Central Bucks, outside Philadelphia, after their five-candidate slate swept the race and Republicans lost their majority. Photo: Jason Nark/Associated PressConservative activists seeking to take over school boards around the country saw their momentum slow in this week’s elections after progressive groups organized rival campaigns targeting the normally sleepy local races. Over the past two years, conservative groups such as Moms for Liberty have flipped control of some school boards nationwide by critiquing what they saw as excessive Covid-19 precautions and left-wing teaching about race and gender. Rallying around the banner of parental rights, the groups have called for limits on what is taught in classrooms or offered in libraries and parental notification of students’ gender transitions among other changes.

This time, liberal and moderate candidates took control in high-profile races in conservative Iowa, and the swing states of Pennsylvania and Virginia. Pennsylvania saw a number of Democratic victories in school boards, particularly in districts that have recently seen GOP-led school boards adopt policies targeting transgender students, as well as reading materials and curriculum on LGBTQ+ history. Turn PA Blue, a partisan political organization, said Democrats gained control of at least seven school boards and gained ground in a half-dozen others in Pennsylvania, a swing state. In the Central Bucks School District north of Philadelphia, Democrats flipped three seats, ousting the incumbent school board president, and retained two others, giving the party majority control. School board politics have also become contentious in Virginia since 2021, when Republican Gov.

Ex-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos maxed out contributions to Michigan GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers. In total, the DeVos family gave Rogers $46,200 in the third quarter, a significant sum this early in the race. In addition to Betsy DeVos, several other members of the DeVos family — who are highly influential in Michigan Republican politics — gave the maximum political contributions to Rogers. Betsy DeVos, a former Michigan Republican Party chair, served as Education secretary under President Donald Trump from February 2017 to January 2021. (AP) — An Indiana Moms for Liberty chapter has followed the conservative group’s national playbook, challenging diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in school districts as part of its “parental rights” mission. Democratic candidate and Carmel city councilman Miles Nelson asked his opponent on stage earlier this month to denounce the local Moms for Liberty chapter. The local chapter is relatively new, but its June newsletter attracted wide condemnation after quoting Hitler on its front cover. “It’s a clear example of how opposition to Moms for Liberty can galvanize people to vote against conservative candidates,” Valant said. Shaw, a former teacher, said she is concerned about the Moms for Liberty chapter's influence in the county.

CNN —Private colleges and universities in Florida must now comply with a rule requiring students and faculty to use bathroom and changing facilities aligned with their sex assigned at birth. LGBTQ advocates have slammed the statutes as an effort to erase them from Florida schools and society. “Right now, in the public schools at least, the unisex restroom is the teacher’s restroom. So we have a situation whereby all the nonbinary and transgender (people) and the teachers all line up for this unisex bathroom. The rule does not yet apply to Florida’s state universities like University of Florida, Florida State University and University of Central Florida.

Central Florida CNN —Now that books are being banned and disappearing from school libraries, students and parents are showing up to school board meetings in Florida to argue for access to books that take on difficult subjects. Some school board lawyers are confused by the rules, and and those arguing for access have few ways to fight back. According to a PEN America study, more than 40% of book bans nationwide last school year happened in school districts in Florida. But for the spectacle to matter, a school board member had to declare the words were inappropriate for the crowd who came to hear them. … They should stay in the libraries.”Jacob Smith, who said he graduated from a county school in 2017, also addressed the board.

As a result, books like “Call Me Max” have been challenged or outright removed from schools and libraries in Florida, as well as other states — and though some believe book bans lead to more book sales, authors say the effect of those bans is devastating for their careers. These bans “overwhelmingly” target books about race and racism, as well as books with LGBTQ characters, PEN America said in its September study on school book bans. The MoveOn Banned Book Mobile stops for an event with local authors and teachers on October 1, 2023 in Decatur, Georgia. “(A book ban) would make news, and people would say, ‘I’ll buy this book just to show them,’” Lukoff said of the once-common result of book bans. Lukoff said his first high-profile bans occurred in early 2021, in Austin and Salt Lake City, when book bans first started to accelerate.

Still, the DeSantis campaign remains adamant that the race is far from settled and the timing of these recent broadsides is coming as 2024 is only just now coming into focus for many voters. “The time for contrast was not over the summer when the government was going after (Trump),” said Ryan Tyson, a senior adviser to DeSantis’ campaign. Club for Growth president David McIntosh recently warned about the potential pitfalls of attacking Trump too aggressively. “Every traditional post-production ad attacking President Trump either backfired or produced no impact on his ballot support and favorability,” McIntosh wrote. The creators of the hit crime drama "Better Call Saul" on Monday won the dismissal of a defamation and trademark infringement lawsuit by Liberty Tax Service for depicting a shady fictional tax firm that appeared to resemble its own. Gardephe said Liberty Tax offered no "particularly compelling" allegations that viewers would be confused into thinking Sweet Liberty was one of its more than 2,500 offices. "Better Call Saul" starred Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, a corrupt lawyer also known as Jimmy McGill. Peter Siachos, a lawyer for Liberty Tax, said his client will explore its legal options, including an appeal or refiling the lawsuit in a state court. Both said their use of Sweet Liberty was protected by the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.

Tina Descovich was named to the nine-member, Tallahassee-based commission, which investigates alleged breaches of public trust by elected and appointed officials, as well as state employees. Moms for Liberty started with Descovich and two other Florida women fighting COVID-19 restrictions in 2021. Along with Descovich, DeSantis also appointed South Florida attorney Luis Fuste to the commission. Yet just a few years later, Cold War liberalism emerged as a rejection of the optimism that flourished before the mid-20th century’s crises. This was a liberalism of fear, as another Cold War liberal intellectual, the Harvard professor Judith Shklar, said. In a way, fear was understandable: Liberalism had enemies. The Cold War changed all that. “We must be aware of the dangers which lie in our most generous wishes,” the Columbia professor and Cold War liberal Lionel Trilling explained.

In January, Pinellas school district officials yanked Toni Morrison’s classic novel “The Bluest Eye” from high schools after a parent complained about a two-page rape scene. But in counties like Pinellas, his policies and rhetoric have already had what his critics believe is their intended effect. She objected to parts of the syllabus Mr. Robinson had distributed to his class on African-American history, which her son had briefly enrolled in. “I don’t stop my class and ask my white kids, ‘Hey, how are you feeling?’ What kind of teacher would do that?” Mr. Robinson said. July 26 (Reuters) - Property and casualty insurer Liberty Mutual will stop offering its business owner's policy (BOP) product in wildfire-prone state California from Oct. 1, in a sign that cost inflation and higher catastrophe losses are pounding insurers' profits. A spokesperson for Liberty Mutual also told Reuters in an emailed statement that the company "will not renew its current book of this line of business beginning in December." BOP is an insurance product usually required by business owners that bundles all major property and liability risks into a single package. Liberty Mutual joins a growing list of major insurers retreating from California. In May this year, State Farm said that it would stop selling new insurance policies to homeowners in California.
