Our Merch, Ourselves
  + stars: | 2023-11-11 | by ( Melissa Kirsch | More About Melissa Kirsch | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Why do we buy merch, or shy away from it? What does the merch you wear say about who you are, what you believe in? Carrying the bag in your own city seemed too boosterish, too earnest for a New Yorker, whereas outside the city, the local merch telegraphs your hometown pride and N.Y.C. Once you leave the place, the merch becomes a souvenir, a nostalgic keepsake. Debating the laws of merch is a diversion, an amusing exercise in questioning our own pieties.

The Eye Makeup Is Everything in ‘Priscilla’
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Ellen Gamerman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
‘The eye makeup was such a huge part in the emotional journey of Priscilla’s storytelling and how it was really a part of her fitting into his world,’ said Cailee Spaeny, who stars as Priscilla Presley in the new film. Photo: Sabrina Lantos/A24/Everett CollectionPriscilla Presley rarely speaks for very long in “Priscilla,” the new movie about her life. Instead, her eye makeup delivers a bold statement about the truth of being married to Elvis. In a quick opening sequence, Priscilla, portrayed by Cailee Spaeny, applies black eyeliner to create a perfect batwing. The state of her eye makeup—from none to heavy to nearly washed clean—tracks her evolution from girl to wife to free woman.

Goth is for everyone, Tolhurst writes, and it’s not a “phase” one has to outgrow. “My life in Goth served as a kind of communal reverse meditation,” Tolhurst writes. Part of what appealed to Tolhurst in goth, and why he continues to consider himself goth, is its “inclusive philosophy,” he said. As long as they could pay cover and were old enough to enter, they were welcomed, Tolhurst writes, whether they were dressed in a blazer or black leather. Not so long ago, landing a helicopter on a Broadway stage was kind of a big deal. In “El Mago Pop,” the charming, thrilling, silly Broadway show by the Spanish illusionist Antonio Díaz, it is one of the more minor stunts. Like most professional magicians, he discovered magic early and worked at it obsessively, a process he details in a long video sequence that begins the brief show. He is short and slight, with long, nimble fingers — watch those fingers when you can, the precision and economy are gorgeous — and a high, fast voice. But maybe that’s what happens when the boy next door comes to Broadway.

When Kate Middleton wore a Suzannah London dress in different colors to various events, it prompted Ms. Holmes to ask readers what clothing items they had in multiples. In her newsletter, she compiled the responses in a spreadsheet and featured a dozen products that had been suggested by more than one person. For some, these communities are a salve for the sheer amount of stuff for sale online, targeted to them in feeds fueled by algorithms. These women want a review of a review and the truth behind a flawless Instagram picture — has a real person actually tried that face roller? Has anyone else been targeted by ads for that particular eyeliner?

That mythical figure is Val (Pico Alexander), and it’s easy to see why he fascinates Lady (Siff). For most of the play, Jabe is heard rather than seen, making his presence felt by imperiously knocking on the floor of the couple’s quarters, which are above the store. Like Val, Lady is different, which also puts her at odds in the community. Williams writes that Lady “verges on hysteria under a strain,” but Siff (best known for the Showtime series “Billions”) evokes neither. Here it is a hindrance, as she can’t quite give in to the forces pressing down on Lady.

One of the world's oldest spirits is making a comeback

The anise-flavored liquor is one of the oldest spirits in the world. He noted that it’s still common for Middle Eastern restaurants to stock European wines rather than traditional spirits like arak. He was experimenting to refine the production of al-kohl, a traditional form of eyeliner, according to Arak Muaddi, a Palestinian craft distillery. Nader Muaddi, the founder of Arak Muaddi, explained that producing arak starts with creating wine. The Middle East has “a very rich history of making wine and spirits, and it’s about time that we share it with the world,” Muaddi went on.

Barbie likely wouldn't exist if Mattel's founder hadn't stumbled across Bild Lilli, a plastic doll based on a comic strip. The first Barbie doll, from 1959, had Lilli's red lips, high blonde ponytail, and winged eyeliner. But these dolls had flat chests, big bellies, and squatty legs – they were built like overweight six- or eight-year-olds," Handler wrote. The newspaper began making Lilli dolls in 1955 because of the comic's popularity and to market the newspaper. "Here were the breasts, the small waist, the long, tapered legs I had enthusiastically described for the designers all those years ago," Handler wrote.

It's a reminder of her time as "the internet's first 'It' girl," as New York Magazine dubbed her in a recent profile. In her recent article in The Atlantic, Twenge said millennials have experienced "a breathtaking financial comeback" since the mid-2010s. Even Martha Stewart jumped on the teenage-dirtbag train — though she could take some notes from Kennedy on the sleaze.

[1/2] A model presents a creation by designer Virginie Viard, as part of her Fall-Winter 2023/2024 Women's ready-to-wear collection show, for fashion house Chanel during Paris Fashion Week, in Paris, France March 7, 2023. The entire set was built around towering, white camellia sculptures that faced the audience, seated in steep risers ringing the space, a sprawling exhibition hall south of the Eiffel Tower. Most looks were black and white, paraded by models striding on shiny black platform boots, often with patterned white tights. For the finale, the massive camellia sculptures suddenly glowed red, and slowly shifted between red and a bright pink as models rounded the room. The catwalk presentation was held on the final day of Paris Fashion Week, which drew crowds of celebrities to the French capital, and featured big-name labels including Hermes, Valentino, LVMH-owned (LVMH.PA) Dior and Louis Vuitton, Kering-owned (PRTP.PA) labels Saint Laurent and Balenciaga.
Movies and television shape what people think about ancient Egypt. Here are 10 things that "Moon Knight", "The Mummy", and others got wrong and one they got right. When it comes to ancient Egypt, they can draw the portrait of pharaohs ruling Egypt with an iron fist, cruel torture, and wicked booby-trapped pyramids. "All of the sarcophagi that I've seen in Egypt were made of stone," said Browder, an author of several books on ancient Egypt. The curse that set Imhotep on his murderous path in "The Mummy" has no historical basisIn "The Mummy," Imhotep was mummified alive.

Eyeliner Out of Stock? Blame TikTok

Sonya Dube went to buy more of one of her favorite makeup products, a Charlotte Tilbury highlighter, this summer only to find it was out of stock—again. So, it was only natural that Ms. Dube turned to TikTok to document her exasperation at not being able to find another bottle. Viewers often can click a link to buy an item right away, making the shopping experience nearly seamless—if the product is in stock. Charlotte Tilbury has sought to adapt its supply chain to respond to customer demand as products go viral, a company spokesperson said. “We do our best to hold enough stock to get us through moments like these,” Ms. Schakler said.

Without further ado, here is a selection of queer icons and pop culture favorites — in no particular order — whom you can channel for Halloween (a.k.a. For a relatively stress-free Halloween ensemble, throw on a tux, top hat, a pocket square and some fierce red lipstick. To channel Ms. Kahlo this Halloween, you’ll need her signature unibrow (eyeliner or an eyebrow pencil should do the trick), a flower crown, red lipstick, a colorful blouse and a floor-length skirt. For this costume, you’ll need a fedora, a (preferably pastel) dress shirt, a tie matching the hat and, if you’re really feeling the fantasy, a color-coordinated sweater vest. If you dress up as any of these queer icons and pop culture favorites for Halloween, tag @NBCOut on Twitter or Instagram in a costume photo!
I’ve Never Been an Impulse Buyer—Until Now
  + stars: | 2022-09-08 | by ( Julia Carpenter | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
During periods of high inflation, consumers sometimes try to “lock in” prices on long-desired items. First, there was the oh-so-smudgeable lilac eyeliner, another $16 added to my cart on a whim. Then, there was the $30 Etsy T-shirt, customized to print Artemisia Gentileschi’s “Judith Slaying Holofernes,” purchased on my phone in the dead of night. But the third impulse buy prompted some reflection. Did I really need a 2-foot-tall minimalist neon sculpture of Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring?” No, of course not.
