A new law gives some sex workers in Belgium more protection from exploitation and violence and more social benefits than any other similar legislation in the world, rights researchers and advocates say. Belgium decriminalized sex work in 2022, a first for Europe. Under this new labor law, which passed in May and took effect on Sunday, sex workers can choose to sign a formal employment contract — although they do not have to do so. “It is the most comprehensive labor law related to sex work that we have seen globally,” Erin Kilbride, a researcher at Human Rights Watch who focuses on women’s rights and L.G.B.T.Q. A labor contract will give sex workers of all genders, as it does other employees, broader access to the country’s robust social security system, including paid maternity leave and sick leave, unemployment aid and the ability to make pension contributions.

CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a record-breaking defense budget, setting aside a staggering third of the government’s total spending as the war in Ukraine drains resources from both sides nearly three years on. The budget for 2025, which was published Sunday, allocates about $126 billion (13.5 trillion rubles) to national defense – amounting to 32.5% of government spending. The defense budget is about $28 billion (three trillion rubles) higher than the previous record set this year. The new three-year budget forecasts a slight reduction in military spending for 2026 and 2027. The North Korean troops may help Russia’s efforts for some time – but the material losses could be harder to make up for.

For people who care about weather and climate, one of the most concerning proposals on the table is to dismantle the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. With the rising costs of and vulnerability to extreme weather in a changing climate for the United States, dismantling or defunding NOAA would be a catastrophic error. This would not only help Americans better prepare for and survive extreme weather but also keep NOAA from falling further behind similar agencies in Europe. While the incoming administration may want to take a sledgehammer to the federal government, there is broad, bipartisan support for NOAA in Congress. Currently its mission is to understand and predict changes in the climate, weather, ocean and coasts.

Volkswagen workers prepare to strike across Germany

London CNN —Tens of thousands of Volkswagen workers will participate Monday in strikes at plants across Germany, labor union IG Metall said, marking the largest walkouts at the carmaker’s domestic operations since 2018. “If necessary, this will become the toughest wage dispute Volkswagen has ever seen,” IG Metall’s chief negotiator Thorsten Groeger said in a statement Sunday. The walkouts will be the first large-scale strikes that Volkswagen has faced since 2018, according to IG Metall, when 50,000 workers idled plants over pay. Indefinite strikes could also be called as a last resort, but only after members have been consulted again, IG Metall said. Volkswagen has said it may need to close plants in Germany for the first time in its 87-year history.

Yet, there are common overlapping themes among Europe’s populists that are also present in Trump’s playbook. “As we know, any kind of peace agreement on Putin’s terms would be terrible for Ukraine and terrible for European security,” Van Rij stresses. “Trump’s reelection purely underscores all of that.”‘Warm air of historical righteousness’Overall, Van Rij sees “a lot of convergence in thinking” between Trump and some of Europe’s populist parties. Van Rij says France would therefore be disproportionately hard-hit by Trump’s America First trade policy. “China is seen as arch enemy number one by some in the Republican party, and Trump shares that view,” Van Rij says.

BUCHAREST, Romania Associated Press —Romanians cast ballots Sunday in a parliamentary election sandwiched between a two-round presidential race, the first of which has plunged the European Union and NATO member into unprecedented turmoil following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference. By 5 p.m., about 7.5 million people – about 42% of eligible voters – had cast ballots, according to the Central Election Bureau. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, predicted the general election could also be reshaped by Georgescu’s success, with far-right parties possibly obtaining record highs. “The impact of the surprise in last Sunday’s presidential election will be significant, and we are going to wake up in a new political reality,” he told The Associated Press. Some have predicted that the far-right nationalist S.O.S Romania party, and the little-known Party of Young People, which has backed Georgescu, could pass the threshold.

It will also be the first time a US president has visited Angola, with which Biden has sought to shore up relations in recent years. As he hosted African leaders in Washington for a 2022 summit, Biden vowed to visit the continent the following year but ultimately missed that deadline. He scheduled a trip to Angola for this October, which was postponed due to a pair of devastating hurricanes hitting the US. The initiative is at the center of the Biden administration’s efforts to boost investment in Africa to blunt China’s growing influence in the region, which has outpaced that of the US. In an interview with The New York Times ahead of Biden’s visit to Angola, Lourenço said he is “ready to work” with Trump in the White House.

Voters in Ireland have set the stage for a return of the grand coalition government that has led their country since 2020, resisting an anti-incumbent wave that has swept across the United States and Europe. The vote count was close on Sunday evening, two days after voters went to the polls, but the trend suggested that Ireland’s two main center-right parties had performed strongly enough to enter coalition talks — a process that could take weeks before the full shape of the government is clear. Sinn Féin, the flagship Irish nationalist party, was on track to finish slightly behind the incumbents, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, a lackluster showing that will probably consign it to several more years in opposition. At one level, the vote was an endorsement of continuity, delivering a result not unlike that of four and a half years ago. But the stability in Ireland’s political center ground masked volatility on the fringes, where anxiety over immigration fueled bids by several independents and other insurgent candidates.

Americans traveling to Europe next year may be in store for some bargains. “That’s a good thing for American tourists traveling abroad in Europe,” said Brendan McKenna, an international economist at Wells Fargo Economics. Now, euro parity is “back on the cards,” James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a research note Nov. 11. For one, the U.S. economy has “held up a lot better than anyone has been expecting” over the past year or two, in stark contrast with Europe, Reilly said. “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is fiction, but at times it resembles a documentary about recent political turmoil. The paranoia at the heart of the “Sacred Fig” storyline sometimes mirrored the atmosphere on set, where the arrival of a stranger could spell doom for the filmmakers. Przewalski’s horse: Back from the brink

20,000 years ago, stone-age humans engraved depictions of wild horses onto cave walls. Today, only one species of wild horse remains. Known as the Przewalski’s horse, the short, stocky, zebra-like animal once roamed throughout Europe and Asia. In 1969, a Mongolian scientist made what some thought would be the last ever sighting of a Przewalski’s horse in the wild. However, over the past 40 years, the breeding of captive populations and reintroductions in Europe and Asia have brought the Przewalski’s horse back from the brink.
