Watching the reveal, I found myself involuntarily gasping as researchers Mark Chen and Barret Zoph showed off GPT-4o’s new chops. The freakout aspect of the reveal came from how it demonstrated that GPT-4o isn’t just a tool — it’s a tool with personality. On the one hand, having the option to interrupt your AI chatbot when it’s going astray saves time. On the other, watching dudes repeatedly talking over a female-reading chatbot made it abundantly clear why you can’t spell “mansplain” without AI.

Many laws have criminalized gay men but not women, leaving us in slightly safer territory. Gay men are also more likely to be victims of hate crimes and violence. Gay men might be criminalized, but gay women have long been targeted, sometimes in heinous ways that fly under the radar of the law, and which go unprosecuted. While I may fret over the ambiguity on Page 5 of a student’s essay, I’m aware of the greater machine. Grade inflation, after all, acts just like real inflation. In the shape-shifting landscape of college admissions, grades have never been more important. And a recommendation letter coming from someone who teaches 150 students is going to look different than from someone who teaches 50. As a high school teacher, I don’t want to hold that much power, nor do I think I should.
