Kansas City has been gripped by Taylor Swift mania amidst her relationship with Travis Kelce. Taylor Swift. They're not alone: Swiftmania has seized Kansas City, and the next great American dynasty — of a blockbuster football team and pop music superstar — is invigorating the Midwestern city. Indeed, Lonely Planet included Kansas City on its list of top destinations to visit in 2024 released on Thursday. While Swift is not single-handedly responsible for the Kansas City renaissance, her presence is currently being felt in the wallets and streets of Kansas City.

MINNEAPOLIS—Downtown streets were so crowded in the 1960s that developers conjured up a maze of elevated walkways between buildings, providing winter-proof avenues for office workers who filled the central city Monday through Friday. Stores, fast-food spots, bakeries and barber shops lined the covered, temperature-controlled walkways, which linked new glass skyscrapers sprouting one after the next. Workers racing to cubicles in the morning kept to the right to avoid crashing into each other, recalled convenience store clerk Monica Bray .

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — Key West’s Fantasy Fest began Friday, launching a 10-day schedule of masquerades, elaborate parties and costume competitions. Events are to culminate next Saturday night, when some 60,000 spectators are expected to line Key West’s downtown streets for the Fantasy Fest Parade, a procession of large-scale motorized floats, costumed marching groups and island-style dancers in colorful feathered attire. The festival has been notoriously famous for its decadent motif, but during the past few years, festival officials have focused their efforts on creative costuming and an effort to create more PG-rated events. Come 2025, Sweden's capital city of Stockholm plans to forbid diesel- and gas-powered vehicles from entering the central part of downtown to cut down on emissions. The area bordered by four streets in Stockholm's center, which cover roughly 20 blocks, will become a so-called environmental zone class 3, according to a report by SVT, a national news outlet in Sweden. That zone classification means no diesel or gas vehicles will be permitted to drive within it. It will be Stockholm's first environmental zone class 3, but the plan is to ultimately expand it beyond that 20-block area. Stockholm is not the first to test low-emission areas, but this all-out ban is one of the boldest moves by a major European capital.

The Mega Millions jackpot soared to over $1 billion after no big winner was declared in Friday's draw. The next estimated jackpot now stands at $1.05 billion, which would make it the fourth-largest Mega Millions prize ever offered, the lottery said in a press release on Saturday. According to the lottery, there are nine different ways to win a prize in the Mega Millions draw, ranging from $2 to the jackpot. The huge prize follows a $1.08 billion Powerball winner earlier this month, which was the sixth-largest lottery win ever and the third-largest Powerball win. The largest lottery win of all time belongs to Edwin Castro, who took home $2.04 billion after winning the Powerball jackpot in November 2022.

Joe Bavasso, now ALD’s vice president for product, had a job at Todd Snyder but sought out Mr. Santis in hopes that ALD would sponsor his summer basketball team in the Rockaways. A few years ago, Mr. Santis discovered the New Balance 550, a low-top lifestyle sneaker, in an old New Balance catalog and revived it as a collaborative release with ALD. Since then, the 550 has become in “a staple iconic franchise for New Balance,” said Chris Davis, the New Balance chief marketing officer and senior vice president for global merchandising. “It was one of those phenomenons in sneaker culture that only comes around once every few years.”

But the granddaughter of the store owner said the winner has yet to come forward. California Lottery confirmed on Thursday that the store had sold the winning ticket, which is the third-largest Powerball jackpot — and the sixth-largest US lottery jackpot — ever won. Esopus, West Park and Ulster Park are known for expensive homes, including turn-of-the-century mansions, on parklike grounds overlooking the Hudson, along with several monasteries and other religious institutions that have helped shield the river’s west bank from development. There are antique stone houses along the Rondout Creek in the hamlet of St. Remy, and along the Wallkill River in the hamlet of Rifton and Black Creek in Esopus. The town’s other small hamlets are Connelly, which borders the Rondout Creek, and Sleightsburgh, whose peninsula-shaped park juts out into the Hudson. (Three additional hamlets are listed on the town’s website, but according to the town’s supervisor, Danielle Freer, they are now obsolete.) The West Park venue occupies a 24,000-square-foot antique Italian-style villa and an adjoining brick building that had housed a Christian Brothers monastery for a century.

Vermont, a state known for peaceful green mountains, grazing cows and tidy covered bridges, is not often seen as a place where mudslides threaten highways, rivers churn with debris and murky, propane-fouled floodwaters fill downtown streets. But those kinds of images of destruction were seared into memory when Tropical Storm Irene battered Vermont in 2011, and led to a drastic reassessment of how to protect the state against storms supercharged by a warming climate. A forceful storm walloped Vermont again this week, causing severe flooding, damaging thousands of homes and businesses, and revealing the effectiveness of some mitigation measures taken since Irene. At the same time, officials and experts said, the storm demonstrated the need for ongoing adaptation, as storms become more extreme and less predictable.

AT&T to shut flagship store in downtown San Francisco
  + stars: | 2023-06-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 16 (Reuters) - U.S. wireless carrier AT&T (T.N) said on Friday it would close its flagship store in downtown San Francisco, deepening the real estate pain in the once-booming tech hub that has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. Stores in San Francisco have been closing their doors as they try to cut down on real estate space in the face of declining customer visits, occupancy and sales. Earlier this week, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW.PA) said it would transfer its Westfield San Francisco shopping mall to lenders. Nordstrom (JWN.N) said last month it was going to give up its downtown store in the mall. Real estate investment trust Park Hotels & Resorts (PK.N) had also said last week it ceased making payments toward a $725 million mortgage linked to its Hilton San Francisco Union Square and Parc 55 hotels.

On Monday morning, hours after part of a century-old apartment building crumbled onto a downtown street, officials in Davenport, Iowa, said they were not aware of anyone still trapped in the rubble. Demolition, they said, was “expected to commence” the next day. But by nightfall on Memorial Day, it was clear that Davenport leaders had badly miscalculated: After protesters gathered at the site, rescue crews found a resident inside the building and pulled her to safety. “The immediate question I know people are asking is, ‘How did she get there? And why wasn’t she found earlier?’” Mayor Mike Matson said Tuesday as officials acknowledged that more people remained missing.

Hop on the tramTo get to Santa Teresa, a picturesque, bohemian neighborhood on a hill, catch one of the iconic yellow street trams that provide a terrific tour on the way up. The tram passes over the famed Arches of Lapa, an 18th-century aqueduct that is a symbol of Rio. The tram leaves every 30 minutes from the downtown station (tickets available there, 20 reis), with the final ride at 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The trams seat just 16 people and can sell out on the weekends, so the earlier you ride, the better. Before you hop on, duck into the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio , which is next to the downtown station.
Many in Turkey say more people could have survived the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the south of the country and neighboring Syria a week ago if the emergency response had been faster and better organized. Two experts consulted by Reuters partly blamed the delays on the centralisation of emergency response under AFAD by President Tayyip Erdogan's government. U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths, speaking in Kahramanmaras on Saturday, called Turkey's disaster response "extraordinary" given the quake's historic size. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said he commissioned the report precisely to improve Turkey's disaster response. But they have generally seen the state's emergency response as effective.
BAKHMUT, Ukraine—In this besieged city, the last remaining civilians huddle in dank basements and behind sandbagged windows at food-and-shelter hubs. They venture out on bicycles or on foot only for food or other essentials. Downtown streets are empty save for soldiers running from door to door seeking cover, and stray dogs looking for food. This is Bakhmut, Russia’s main immediate military target and one of the most dangerous places on earth. A city of some 80,000 before the war, known for its sparkling-wine factory, it is now home to barely a few thousand who face a daily struggle to survive, as Russian forces press forward house by house and bombard it with artillery.
