IRS set to launch its free tax filing pilot program
  + stars: | 2024-01-25 | by ( Katie Lobosco | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Washington CNN —When tax filing season opens on January 29, some taxpayers will have the option of filing their 2023 federal tax returns with a brand new, government-run system. The law required the IRS to complete a cost and feasibility study about developing a free, electronic tax filing system, which it released in May. If the pilot program is successful, Direct File could eventually rival competing services in the private market. This screenshot shows the Internal Revenue Service's free tax filing pilot. It offers step-by-step guidance, in both English and Spanish, to taxpayers filing their federal tax returns by posing questions about their income and tax situations.

HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas attorney has been accused of using work-related visits to a county jail to smuggle in legal paperwork laced with ecstasy and synthetic marijuana to inmates over the past several months, authorities announced Monday. Ronald Lewis, 77, was arrested on Friday after arriving at the Harris County Jail in Houston to visit an inmate, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a news conference. Other attorneys are also suspected of smuggling drug-laced paperwork into the jail but “we don’t think it’s actually widespread,” Gonzalez said. We’re going to make sure we investigate it fully and hold them accountable.”Gonzalez said the county jail is like others around the country that have seen an increase in overdoses. The county jail has had at least 18 inmate deaths this year, some of them believed to be drug-related.

CNN —Hidden under years of dirt and grime in storage rooms, hundreds of precious religious objects have been rediscovered at a monastery in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. Until earlier this year, three of the sculptures were more than 7,500 miles away in New York’s Rubin Museum of Art, which specializes in Himalayan art, as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Like many of Nepal’s religious sites, Itumbaha is no stranger to the theft and looting of its relics and architecture. Both men remained valued employees at Carta, with the sales representative even getting promoted just weeks after the alleged "helicopter penis" incident, according to former employees. CEO Henry Ward cofounded Carta, originally called eShares, in 2012 as a service for startups to digitize their paper stock certificates. Today Carta helps startups track their investors, employees manage their equity awards, and venture capitalists administer their funds. The lawsuit says that 10 days after Rogers filed her complaint, Ward "began treating Ms. Rogers in an aggressive and demeaning manner during several meetings." Many of the employees who have spoken out publicly about Carta and Ward have found themselves embroiled in expensive legal battles.

"My parents, they're very old school, and all the existing solutions were excruciating to use, and we realized there was a real need for a frictionless B2B payments solution," said Lin Murata. It's a tall order to digitize B2B payments — companies ranging from middle-market companies and mom-and-pop shops have been notoriously hard to penetrate and spur technological change. Of the $125 trillion market for global B2B payments, only a fraction of transactions — less than $6 trillion according to Slope's pitch deck — occur online. The pace of executive churn has picked up in the Indian tech industry in recent months. "We are pleased to welcome Jatin to Cognizant and confident he will help us achieve our goals as we continue to focus on driving revenue growth," Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S said in the statement. Today, these dynamic food trucks serve up gourmet delights and cater events, fueled by convenience and social media-driven connection. While the most apparent technology food-truck owners use is front-end POS systems, back-end technology is also essential. Food-truck owners face the challenge of frequent menu updates, often requiring them to recreate signage or hire someone for the task. This helps food-truck owners make informed decisions related to parking and operating hours, which significantly influences their sales performance. In fact, a 2022 study published by Elsevier found that location was a key challenge for food-truck owners, as it affected customer targeting, exposure, and financial sustainability.

Big Pharma and biotech companies often outsource clinical trials to external companies. Europe's early-stage clinical trials startups are flush with funds but they're struggling to grow. The fate — and market cap — of a biotech company often lies with a successful clinical trial. The COVID-19 pandemic also spotlighted another promising alternative to carry out these trials — startups. While the US touts around a dozen clinical trials unicorns valued at $1 billion or higher, per Dealroom estimates, Europe's startups are lagging behind.

We know what to pay when we think a stock is going up, which is the going price. Next thing you know that stock is down to $143 and you say to yourself, should I buy it back?
