Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) speaks at a press conference as Rep. Steve Scalise looks on following a Republican caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol. The top Republicans vying to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the next speaker of the House of Representatives have backed out of a televised debate that was scheduled to air Monday on Fox News. "The Republican conference needs a family discussion." Many Republican caucus members were angry that the party's differences would be publicly aired on national television in a debate for would-be speakers, a third source told NBC. The GOP caucus is scheduled to hold a conference meeting at 6 p.m. Monday to discuss choosing a speaker.

In 2022, Rep. Lauren Boebert won her bid for reelection by less than 600 votes. The incident may have hurt her chances of retaining her seat in 2024, and could cost the GOP. Boebert's on thin ice with her constituentsFirst elected to Congress in 2020, Boebert won her election in part by painting her Democratic opponent as someone with a "socialist agenda" who wanted "more government control." In 2022, two years after Boebert won her congressional seat by more than 26,500 votes, the Republican legislator narrowly retained her seat against Democratic challenger Adam Frisch by fewer than 600 total votes. The last time Djokovic and Medvedev clashed at the U.S. Open was in the 2021 final, when the Russian captured his only major so far and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. Second seed Djokovic, 36, fought back from two sets down to beat fellow Serb Laslo Djere in the third round but did not drop another set on the way to his 10th U.S. Open final. "He (Djokovic) is always better than the previous time he plays," said 27-year-old Medvedev, who will be appearing in his third U.S. Open final, having also lost to Rafa Nadal in 2019. While Djokovic and Medvedev are compelling figures, neither has been fully embraced by the New York crowds they have so desperately courted. Not long ago Medvedev was Flushing Meadows' public enemy number one for his on court antics that included giving the crowd the finger during a 2019 match.

The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Without Trump at the debate, seven other candidates are set to make their cases for the White House. Here's a look at how the debate is coming together, as the GOP candidates had to meet a set of criteria to even appear onstage. Christie, once a close ally of Trump, has consistently been the fiercest critic of the former president in the GOP race. Suarez, should he make it onstage, will likely just focus on boosting his profile to GOP voters beyond South Florida.

US economic sanctions have spawned something of a global backlash, in the form of the dedollarization movement. This was anticipated as early as 2019, by an expert who warned the weaponization of the dollar could have serious consequences for the global economic system. Back in 2023, dedollarization is a thingFast forward to 2023, and some of the recent rumblings across the global currency and monetary landscape are strikingly in line with Sen's prognostications. All that could come at a huge cost to the global economy – and drive a "complete reversal of global economic integration," he wrote. The dollar's share of global reserves could slowly decline, but no alternatives exist that could completely displace the US currency, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said last month.

Opinion America Is Triggered by ProgressI keep reaching for Susan Faludi’s 1991 book, “Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women,” because it explains so much about American politics and culture. In the wake of Trump’s “Lock her up” campaign for president in 2016, it’s simply text, with gender emerging as a central fault line of American politics. Listen to an excerpt from “Backlash” narrated by Michelle Goldberg. A lot has changed since “Backlash” came out 32 years ago, especially in the news and entertainment, two of Faludi’s prime targets. The reaction has been a backlash that is in many ways more brutal and angry than what Faludi described, even if the fragmentation of American culture means it’s less all-encompassing.

De-dollarization can stem from sliding faith in the dollar, or developments that enhance the credibility of other currencies. The bank maintained that China stands as the only competitor eager to supplant the role of the dollar and the US economy in the long-term.
