Singapore CNN —A humble suburban school in Australia has fended off competition from skyscrapers, museums and airport terminals to be named World Building of the Year 2024. Brett BoardmanA school had long been on the south Sydney site, though the old 1970s building was no longer fit for purpose, according to fjcstudio, the design firm behind the project. The World Building of the Year was selected from the winners of each category, as chosen by a panel of 175 festival delegates. Friday’s result marks the second consecutive year that the WAF judges opted for an educational building, with a serene boarding school in China taking last year’s title. Darlington Public School is also the second Sydney building to win in the past three years, after Quay Quarter Tower — dubbed the world’s first “upcycled” skyscraper for retaining two-thirds of an old high-rise on the site — won in 2022.

Taking a quick jog or bike ride instead of sitting all day may reduce blood pressure, research suggests. Gentle exercise routines like walking and tai chi can also reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Using their own model to estimate how different activities impact blood pressure, they concluded that small changes could do a long way. Adding more activity helped to lower blood pressure even more: 10 to 20 minutes of exercise daily reduced blood pressure enough to lower heart disease risk by about 10%, according to the researchers' estimates. AdvertisementTai chi has also been found to lower blood pressure as effectively as cardio.

Annie Korzen and her husband, Benni Korzen, have been married for 60 years. Annie Korzen said they eat different dinners, because eating the same food feels like a "sacrifice." AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Annie Korzen, an 85-year-old actor, writer, and social media influencer based in LA, and the author of "The Book of Annie." The Korzens prefer different cuisines, so Annie tends to eat Asian and Italian-inspired meals, while Benni eats traditional Danish foods. CNN —An emperor penguin surprised locals when it appeared on a beach in Australia after making an epic journey of thousands of miles from its home in Antarctica. Ocean Beach is more than 2,200 miles due north of Antarctica, suggesting the penguin probably swam significantly further to reach Australia. “It stood up in the waves and just waddled straight up to us, an emperor penguin, he was probably about a meter high, and he was not shy at all,” he added. But as Earth’s temperature rises as a result of greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions, sea ice is at risk of disappearing. This widespread “catastrophic breeding failure” is the first such recorded incident, according to the report, and supports grim predictions that more than 90% of emperor penguin colonies will be “quasi-extinct” by 2100 as the world warms.

Increasingly, Europe’s centrist figureheads are dropping their once-high-minded rhetoric on irregular migration, reaching instead for positions that were previously the preserve of the continent’s populist rabble-rousers. In Poland, like in much of Europe, “voters across the board expect that border security and migration controls are the priority,” Kucharczyk said. But Thursday’s victory for Tusk in Brussels underscores a broader, rightward shift across Europe on the issue of irregular migration. “It’s an existential issue for this coalition, and they don’t want to take chances on issues like migration,” Kucharczyk said. The wider question is whether the longstanding principles of the border-free Schengen Area can survive an enduring era of rising migration and populist subversion.

Archaeologists found 50 Viking-era skeletons in Åsum, Denmark. Dating back to the 9th or 10th century, the graves are evidence of international trade. The area's growth was influenced by these trade routes and its proximity to the sea. They had no idea they were standing on the well-preserved graves of 50 Viking-era skeletons. "As we suspected, the graves tell us a story of people connected to the international trade routes," Borre Lundø told Business Insider via email.

AASUM, Denmark — In a village in central Denmark, archeologists made a landmark discovery that could hold important clues to the Viking era: a burial ground, containing some 50 “exceptionally well-preserved” skeletons. “This is such an exciting find because we found these skeletons that are so very, very well preserved,” said archeologist Michael Borre Lundø, who led the six-month dig. The site was discovered last year during a routine survey, ahead of power line renovation work on the outskirts of the village of Aasum, 3 miles northeast of Odense, Denmark’s third-largest city. Experts hope to conduct DNA analyses and possibly reconstruct detailed life histories, as well as look into social patterns in the Viking Age, such as kinship, migration patterns and more. “This opens a whole new toolbox for scientific discovery,” said Borre Lundø as he stood on the muddy, wind-swept excavation site.

Soren Lassen, head of offshore wind research at Wood Mackenzie, said the U.S. offshore wind industry is going through a needed readjustment, and that while the long-term outlook remains intact, progress has been pushed out. South Fork Wind offers tangible evidence that wind projects can work. The company developed the five-turbine Block Island Wind Farm, which is northwest of South Fork Wind, in 2016. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management first awarded the leases for South Fork Wind in 2013, which where acquired by Deepwater Wind.
