For Wells Fargo, the company is buying back the most stock of any of the big banks. For nearly eight years Pan Gongsheng has overseen one of the world’s biggest pots of money: China’s $3 trillion in foreign currency reserves. Now he will run the country’s central bank, playing an even more powerful role in the Chinese economy. Mr. Pan, a prominent economist, was named on Tuesday as governor of the central bank, the People’s Bank of China. The appointment of Mr. Pan comes at a delicate time for China. Foreign currency reserves are effectively a country’s emergency fund to be used at times of financial stress.

We asked 17 columnists topick the one piece of culture thatbest captures the country. Opinion America Is Black Pain and Joy“Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang was the first rap song I remember hearing. Struggle and pain are often a kiln for creativity, and that has meant that much of American culture is born of the story of Black American life. It took the crosscurrents of Black life and produced of them a chorus, and America — and the world — was enthralled.

But what does the Fed mean when it talks about labor markets and their impact on inflation? What’s happening: At its most basic level, labor productivity is a measure of the value of the goods and services produced by a company compared with the amount of labor used to produce that output. Labor productivity decreased 2.1% in the first quarter of 2023, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported earlier this month. The silver lining: The good news is technological innovations typically drive upturns in productivity and AI could be such an innovation. Absolutely not,” Yellen said, echoing the joint statement leaders from the Group of Seven made at last month’s summit in Japan.

"This does remind me an awful lot of that March-to-June period in 2008," said Michele, rattling off the parallels. Last month, JPMorgan bought failed regional player First Republic; in March 2008, JPMorgan took over the investment bank Bear Stearns. Michele oversees more than $700 billion in assets for JPMorgan and is also global head of fixed income for the bank's asset management arm. Investors are hoping that next week's Federal Reserve meeting offers more clarity about the path interest rates could take. Rising interest rates squeeze consumers, while a cut to follow should help boost economic activity. These pricey purchases are often financed, and higher rates mean higher costs. "Even if the sticker price of the thing doesn't change, the interest rate still matters a lot for their monthly budget." The "brakes were hit very hard in 2022," largely due to higher rates on the new-home construction side, he said.

Goldman COO John Waldron said economic uncertainty has been a major challenge for the bank. 2 said he could not guarantee the bank won't make more job cuts this year, citing continued economic uncertainty. When asked about the potential for future job cuts, Waldron cited those "crosscurrents" as a reason the bank's cost-cutting may not be over. In September, Goldman cut a few hundred staffers, including members of the investment bank's technology, media, and telecommunications team, Insider reported. "I think we have done a better job in the last four or five years really trying to build a deeper succession pipeline," Waldron said.

A slide in crude oil prices has weighed on the Club's three energy holdings. Brent crude — the global oil benchmark — and West Texas Intermediate Crude, the U.S. oil standard, have fallen roughly 7% and 8%, respectively, over the past week. @CL.1 5D mountain West Texas Intermediate crude prices over the past five days. In those instances, Gabelman said he thinks oil prices are unlikely to react significantly. In sum, we find the situation leading up to the OPEC+ meeting too murky to make a move on our oil stocks, despite their recent swoon.

Americans have jobs. The share of U.S. adults who said they were doing “at least OK financially” fell sharply last year, to 73 percent from 78 percent in 2021, according to the latest Federal Reserve survey of Americans’ financial well-being, released on Monday. The erosion in financial health was broad-based, cutting across racial and ethnic lines, educational categories and income groups. The data, from the Fed’s Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking, echoes other surveys showing that Americans feel glum about the economy and their own finances. But it provides new details on how the economic crosscurrents of a strong job market and rising prices are affecting families.
It was a big week for investors in retail stocks with some of the sector's biggest names reporting. Walmart posted an earnings beat and strong guidance, while Foot Locker noticeably missed Wall Street's expectations for the quarter and gave uninspiring guidance for future performance. With this landscape in mind, CNBC Pro screened for the most-liked retail stocks on Wall Street. The 12 stocks below have at least 55% of analysts rating them as buy and an average upside of more than 10%. Walmart also raised its full-year earnings guidance following the strong quarterly report.
Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell speaks during a news conference at the Federal Reserve in Washington, DC, on March 22, 2023. None of those figures are satisfactory for Fed officials. "Most Fed officials don't seem comfortable that the rate hike cycle is over," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst said in a note. The next Fed policy meeting comes in six weeks, on June 13-14, and April's consumer price report is due in one week, on May 10. This Fed meeting is crucial."

The good news: Banks were willing to go to the Fed for help, and the central bank was willing and able to comply. Programs such as the BTFP can have that stigma, too, but in this case the Fed made its conditions a bit easier than the discount window. The BTFP also pays par value on securities offered in exchange for cash, while the discount window uses market value. "The discount window takes everything. "We have seen the largest uptake of the discount window in history.
Oil prices fall Tuesday after the US said it plans to sell more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The Energy Department will start the sale of 26 million barrels of sweet crude in April. Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, fell 1.5% to $85.40 a barrel but was off lows of the session. The drop in oil prices Tuesday was also taking place as US consumer price inflation data showed prices eased in January, but it was by less than anticipated. OPEC, meanwhile, on Tuesday, raised its 2023 oil demand forecast by 100,000 barrels per day, to 2.3 million barrels, as China reopens its economy after strict COVID-related restrictions.
Wall Street is wrapping up a volatile week, but some stocks still did well despite several macro crosscurrents. Take a look at some of the biggest gainers this week, and where analysts see them going forward. Tesla was one of this week's notable gainers, continuing its post-earnings report rally. Semiconductor manufacturer and IP company Skyworks Solutions also made this week's list of biggest gainers. Several financial stocks also had a strong week, with Everest Re and Fiserv gaining 10.1% and 9.2%, respectively.
With a majority of S & P 500 companies having posted their quarterly results, investors' focus will turn toward inflation and the consumer price index reading in the upcoming week. The three major indexes are on pace to end the week down, with the S & P 500 poised to post its worst performance since December. Sharp declines for Alphabet , which is off by more than 9% this week, dragged the tech-heavy index. January's consumer price index With the latest Powell speech in the books, investors are now looking ahead to the consumer price index for insight into the pace of inflation. "Retail sales and CPI is really driven by the consumer, and a lot of eyes are on how the consumer doing," Bruno said.
There's a bullish case on stocks that's not gained much traction yet. With another 4%-5% upside in the S & P 500 , the thesis would demand serious attention. A Fed pause? But this time, the S & P 500 had fallen 20% by the time the 10-to-2-year Treasury curve inverted, whereas in past cycles stocks were near a high. The S & P 500 probably needs to reach 4300 — up another 7.5% — to make a solid case for the bear market being over, says John Kolovos of Macro Risk Advisors.
According to Sherlund, optimism surrounding technology stocks will make a comeback this year — but the key is weathering upcoming earnings season first. The latest market backdrop reminds him of prior downturns. "2022 was a terrible year for these [software] stocks," said Sherlund. His latest market forecast coincides with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 's latest struggles. Sherlund's base case is the move to high-growth areas such as the cloud will provide a long-term boost to software stocks.
Retail sales data and corporate earnings have offered investors a mixed picture, but the landscape has some bright spots for investors, according to Cowen. "There are many crosscurrents with the consumer," Oliver Chen, senior equity research analyst at Cowen covering retail and luxury goods, said on CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " Friday. "All three offer very strong value to the consumer," Chen said. Ulta's a beauty retailer – all things beauty all in one place, that's a very good category. Chen said his team also likes recommending retail stocks that have inflation resistance, like luxury brands, as well as stocks like Costco, "which offer exceptional value."
Barbell strategy The other way to think about diversification — and one we used heavily during this year's choppy market — is the barbell portfolio strategy. And if inflation persists but also economic activity picks up, you better own energy stocks. That also brings more demand into the oil market, so expect oil prices and the energy stocks tied to it to benefit. But using correlations and the barbell method to create a diverse mix of holdings can help you stay invested in market.
