The Nasdaq tumbled 2.1% on Friday as tech stocks plunged, marking its worst day since January 31. “US earnings updates this week will be key to see if they can keep topping expectations and buoying risk appetite in a higher-for-longer interest rate environment.”Tesla, Facebook-parent Meta, IBM, Microsoft and Alphabet all report first quarter earnings later this week. “Big Tech earnings may determine whether the stock market avoids its first four-week losing streak in two years,” wrote Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing at E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley on Monday. About 15% of S&P 500 companies have reported first quarter earnings, and nearly three-quarters of those companies have posted a positive earnings-per-share surprise. But investors are nervously waiting for the Magnificent Seven, those massive Tech stocks that carry an outsized portion of market weight, to report.

Joe Biden is one of the most unpopular presidents in modern American history. In Gallup polling, his approval ratings are lower than those of any president embarking on a re-election campaign, from Dwight Eisenhower to Donald Trump. Apart from anxiety about his age, there isn’t a chattering-class consensus or common shorthand for why his presidency is such a political flop. When things went south for other recent chief executives, there was usually a clearer theory of what was happening. Trump’s unpopularity was understood to reflect his chaos and craziness and authoritarian forays.

In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. In that poll, two-thirds of Haley voters in Iowa said they would not vote for Trump in a general election; that number soared past three-fourths of her voters in New Hampshire. One key reason: fully 93% of all GOP-leaning voters said they disapproved of Biden’s performance as president. Madrid believes Biden’s record on immigration is the biggest obstacle to him harvesting support among the Republicans uneasy about Trump. A wave of retiring Boomers means the generation will soon be at "peak burden" to the economy. It's the Baby Boomers, who are aging fast and approaching their "peak burden" years in regard to their drag on the economy and the resources of younger generations. And it isn't the case that Baby Boomers will derail economic growth nearly as much as, say, a full-blown recession, according to Dean Baker, an economist who described the Baby Boomers as a "time bomb" in a 1998 paper. DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — Business and political elites descended on the Swiss Alpine snows of Davos to suss out “rebuilding trust” in a splintering world. If there’s any takeaway from the World Economic Forum's annual meeting — boldly touting that theme — it’s that we still have a long way to go. The idea is getting people together, and big announcements are often just a byproduct — not the aim. “It’s unrealistic to think that Davos — or any meeting, anywhere in the world — in one meeting can rebuild trust when it’s fragmented on so many dimensions," said Rich Lesser, chairman of Boston Consulting Group. But thousands of conversations between the social, private and public sectors help create "a starting point for rebuilding trust,” he said.

A large depreciation didn’t fully materialize; rather, the dollar’s value in the parallel retail market – popularly known as the “blue dollar” – increased some 13%. Milei, an outsider and right-wing populist, has also accused the Central Bank of recklessly printing money in order to fund public spending. The government has made access to foreign currency increasingly more stringent, which has caused the parallel market to flourish. “It isn’t exactly full, but there’s a lot in there,” she said, declining to provide her last name because trading foreign currency under the table is illegal. “Listening to the radio and looking on the internet, there isn’t any craziness about dollar, dollar, dollar,” he said.

By now, you probably know a lot about George Santos, the congressman who scammed with abandon and made up almost everything. But the fact that he remains in Congress highlights something crucial about the people’s House. Even in that company, Mr. Santos stands out by exposing just how much craziness the Republican Party is willing to tolerate in pursuit of narrow partisan gains. The biographical lies and widely reported small-time hustles that boosted Mr. Santos pale in comparison with his penchant for “just throwing ideas.”I’m borrowing that phrase directly from Mr. Santos, who said it in a Spaces conversation on X, formerly Twitter, in October, shortly after Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel. “I don’t care if we go into a police state for a couple of months.”

“It’s a mishegas,” Whitney Siegel (Emma Stone), a convert to Judaism, says to her husband, Asher Siegel (Nathan Fielder), as they do a good deed for a needy family. “Mitzvah,” Asher corrects her. “Mishegas means something else.” (It means, roughly, “craziness” in Yiddish.) “The Curse,” which has its streaming premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime Friday and its on-air premiere on Showtime Sunday, is also something else — several things else. A few things you can bet on when there’s been a terrible mass shooting in this country. What shooting?”C. “Hey, I thought you said you were going to ask about impeaching Biden.”D. “The problem is the human heart, not guns.”Did you guess it was D, people? Perhaps we should avoid complaining until we see if Speaker Johnson proposes new legislation requiring the police to stop and search all human hearts. Gun control — or, as its proponents prefer, gun safety — always becomes a big topic of conversation after a horrific shooting.

Sept 18 (Reuters) - Cadence Bank (CADE.N) CEO Dan Rollins calls the regional banking crisis from earlier this year "March madness." Interviews with half a dozen regional bank executives and economists show the March banking crisis has had a lasting impact on the regional banking industry and the economy. Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, said the banking crisis had "a magnifying effect" on the Fed's tightening but its full impact would come with a lag. The failure triggered a crisis of confidence, with depositors moving their money from regional banks to the perceived safety of the largest lenders. The KBW Regional Bank Index (.KRX) is down about 20% since early March despite a summer rebound.

Morgan Stanley economists see a stronger housing market cycle and interest rates being cut in 2024. Luckily, Morgan Stanley strategists think the housing market is finally reaching a turning point. That will mark the end of the current craziness and the beginning of a new housing market cycle. As for the US industries and stocks connected to the housing market, Wilson noted that tomorrow's market will bring about different winners and losers. Higher interest rates mean higher mortgage rates, and higher mortgage rates mean lower demand for mortgages.
