March 29 (Reuters) - Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts and industry executives are calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's newly launched GPT-4, in an open letter citing potential risks to society and humanity. "Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable," the letter said. The letter detailed potential risks to society and civilization by human-competitive AI systems in the form of economic and political disruptions, and called on developers to work with policymakers on governance and regulatory authorities. Rather than pause research, she said, AI researchers should be subjected to greater transparency requirements. "If you do AI research, you should be very transparent about how you do it."

Musk's comments add to a long-running debate over whether such advisers have too much sway over corporate decision-making. Academic reviews have found mixed evidence about the proxy advisers’ impact. U.S. Republican state officials have also weighed in, writing to the two advisory firms asking if their recommendations met their obligations to investors. Contrary to Musk, however, Republicans at the state and national level have also charged top passive fund managers themselves have grown too aggressive with their proxy votes, a claim fund managers deny. Tesla has faced its own disagreements with the proxy advisers.

Tesla may announce Mexico plant in coming days - report

MEXICO CITY, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Electric carmaker Tesla (TSLA.O) could announce the construction of a "Gigafactory" in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon as soon as Friday, local newspaper Reforma reported Monday. The initial investment is projected at between $800 million and $1 billion, sources told the newspaper. A source told Reuters then that Musk had met with Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia and U.S. The Mexican Gigafactory, planned on the outskirts of the city Monterrey, would start by building components for current Tesla models, a source told Reforma, later possibly building a new model at a lower cost than other factories. Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said earlier this month that Musk had toured three states in Mexico scouting locations for the factory.
The total investment, taking into account future expansions, could eventually reach $10 billion, sources told the newspaper. The announcement would follow Chief Executive Elon Musk's visit to the state, which borders Texas, in October. A source told Reuters then that Musk had met with Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia and U.S. A federal official told Reuters Tesla would announce news of its planned investment when it was ready to do so, but that it would not necessarily be before Christmas. Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said earlier this month that Musk had toured three states in Mexico scouting locations for the factory.
Reuters could not determine the full scope of the federal investigation or whether it involved the same alleged problems with animal testing identified by employees in Reuters interviews. Musk has pushed hard to accelerate Neuralink’s progress, which depends heavily on animal testing, current and former employees said. Delcianna Winders, director of the Animal Law and Policy Institute at the Vermont Law and Graduate School, said it is “very unusual” for the USDA inspector general to investigate animal research facilities. In September, the company responded to employee concerns about its animal testing by holding a town hall to explain its processes. “We’re extremely careful,” he said, to make sure that testing is “confirmatory, not exploratory,” using animal testing as a last resort after trying other methods.

Nov 11 (Reuters) - Elon Musk, who heads five companies including Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Twitter Inc, said in a tweet on Friday that his companies will be well positioned in 2023 despite the possibility of a tough economy. Twitter currently has $13 billion in debt and faces interest payments totaling close to $1.2 billion in the next 12 months. Meanwhile, electric carmaker Tesla added to its inventory in Shanghai, China, at its fastest pace ever in October. Musk told analysts last month that demand was strong in the quarter and he expected Tesla to be "recession-resilient". Musk is also the CEO of satellite internet company SpaceX, brain-chip startup Neuralink and tunneling enterprise The Boring Company.
WASHINGTON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he thinks Twitter boss Elon Musk's relationships with other countries is worthy of being looked at. "I think that Elon Musk's cooperation and/or technical relationships with other countries is worthy of being looked at," Biden said. Musk's purchase of Twitter sparked concerns that he could face pressure from countries trying to control online speech. In a tweet thread on Monday, Sacca said he's always admired Musk and he referred to electric carmaker Tesla as "world positive." "His success to date is not an accident," Sacca wrote to his 1.6 million followers. But the challenges that come with running a popular social-messaging service like Twitter require a level of nuance and human understanding that Musk so far has not demonstrated, Sacca wrote. "Batteries and motors and rockets and tunnels and solar panels have definitively right and wrong answers," Sacca wrote. The "hard truth" for Musk is that "he is straight-up alone right now and winging this," Sacca wrote.
WASHINGTON — Which party controls Congress next year could have big implications for Twitter — and its new “Chief Twit,” Elon Musk. A Jordan spokesman had no comment about Musk and Twitter, but Republicans expect the company will be more cooperative with any future GOP investigations with Musk at the helm. But upon taking control of Twitter, Musk said he would first form a “content moderation council,” and Yoel Roth, head of Safety and Integrity at Twitter, insisted that the company’s policies on hate speech have not changed. “If Elon Musk has said now that he’s going to start a content moderation board, that was one good sign, but I continue to be concerned about that,” Klobuchar said. Other Democrats are raising national security concerns about how Musk financed the $44 billion Twitter deal.
