The consumer is expected to remain resilient this year, but some retailers will benefit more than others. Consumer spending drives the U.S. economy, accounting for 68% of gross domestic product — and several analysts on Wall Street forecasted that spending will remain strong through 2024. However, the prioritization of that spending will result in winners and losers. At the same time, they expect spending growth for essentials to slow, thereby leaving more money left over for discretionary purchases. It's only fitting then that OpenAI should have a headquarters befitting its status as the vanguard of new AI revolution. But the company has kept details about its San Francisco headquarters a closely guarded secret. A reporter for Insider was even less successful, turned away by a security guard on an intercom who refused even to confirm or deny the existence of an OpenAI office at the location. But we may now have some hints about what it's like inside the offices of the world's most famous AI company, thanks to architectural plans and planning documents viewed by Insider. "It's an impressive space," said Peter Eisenbeiser, a city official who performed the final inspection of the 1960 Bryant Street space.

"In aggregate the Bed Bath & Beyond locations were some of the best that I've seen become available. The leases are for both Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby locations. Leases for the Buy Buy Baby outposts could be clawed back depending on what happens at an auction for the chain's assets, Bed Bath said in a court filing. Bed Bath raked in $24.41 million in all from the lease auction. A portion of those proceeds will likely go to unpaid rents at the locations and the rest will go to Bed Bath to pay the retailer's many creditors.

With the end of another earnings season in sight, Wall Street's attention has turned to Washington and the debt ceiling deadline. Republican negotiators on Friday walked out of talks on raising the debt limit , abruptly ending a positive week of discussions that appeared to be leading toward a deal. Democrats and the White House have been pushing for a "clean" hike to the debt limit that would push the next deadline past the 2024 presidential election, while Republicans are pressing for spending cuts. Many investors believe this ongoing game of chicken over the debt limit is largely for show, since the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt obligations. U.S. President Joe Biden hosts debt limit talks with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other congressional leaders in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 9, 2023.

Under this scenario, lower-income consumers will choose to spend their money at off-price retailers. The analysts like Ross Stores (ROST) best, and called Burlington Stores (BURL) high-risk, high-reward, with a multi-year turnaround story. Bank of America, in a note this week, emphasized that the off-price retailers, including TJX, will be eager to take over the additional closed Bed Bath & Beyond locations. Foot Locker will close 400 stores by 2026 in malls. Anchor vacancies in malls hurt neighbors like Foot Locker and reduce traffic to their stores as well. Eventually, stores like Foot Locker go dark and it becomes harder for the mall to survive. The firm has picked the stocks it thinks will win — and lose — as customers cut their spending. Bank of America thinks a recession is coming, despite the fact that the US economy is still holding up fairly well right now. "We see risks to higher-end exposed US stocks this year, in part due to an amplified wealth effect," Hall wrote. Hall thinks those could include winter clothing maker Canada Goose, home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond, electronics retailer Best Buy, and consumer products companies like Clorox and Kimberly-Clark. But the following 22 companies all have "Buy" ratings from Bank of America, and Hall expects them to benefit from the oncoming economic slump as high-earners cut back on spending.
Kohl’s had a rough holiday

New York CNN —As consumers pulled back on their holiday spending amid biting inflation, it seems that Kohl’s dropped off many shoppers’ lists. Sales at Kohl’s stores open for at least one year dropped 6.6% during the holiday quarter, the company said Wednesday. Kohl’s comments echo those of other retailers, like Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT), who have said consumers are strained, although those companies posted stronger holiday results than Kohl’s did. This change in shopping behavior hurts Kohl’s more than big-box rivals because the chain does not sell food, nor as many necessities. In November, Kohl’s chief executive Michelle Gass announced she was leaving the company to become the CEO-in-waiting at Levi’s (LEVI).

Feb 21 (Reuters) - TJX Cos Inc (TJX.N) is likely to see a strong growth in annual sales as inflation pushes bargain-hungry but brand-conscious customers to off-price retailers offering cheaper deals and promotions. A case in point is Nordstrom Inc (JWN.N), which cut its annual profit forecast after its off-price store chain Rack failed to attract people despite heavy discounting due to inventory mismanagement. Jessica Ramirez, analyst at Jane Hali and Associates, said TJX is in tune with what the customer is shopping for and are interested. "TJX is very strong with their assortment ... they have been able to bring a lot of good names into their product offerings," she said.
