The hundreds of fossil fuel-connected people make up just a tiny share of the 90,000 people who registered to attend the climate summit known as COP28. “Let history reflect the fact that this is the Presidency that made a bold choice to proactively engage with oil and gas companies,” al-Jaber said. COP28 comes as the planet faces a mounting imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. David Hone, Shell's chief climate adviser, is in Dubai for at least his 17th appearance at the annual climate talks. At the moment, it's preventing about 0.1% of the energy sector's carbon emissions from reaching the atmosphere, according to the IEA.

Sean "Diddy" Combs performs at the BET Awards 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, U.S., June 26, 2022. REUTERS/David Swanson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 17 (Reuters) - Hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs and his ex-girlfriend R&B vocalist Cassandra Ventura on Friday settled her lawsuit that accused the rapper of serial physical abuse, sexual slavery and rape, according to lawyers for Ventura. In a joint written statement with Combs, Ventura said that she "decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control." Ventura, who performs under the stage name Cassie, filed the lawsuit on Thursday in federal court. In it she accused Combs of forcing her to engage in sex acts with a succession of male prostitutes he hired while he watched and filmed the encounters for his own pleasure.

Sean Combs arrives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala (Met Gala) to celebrate the opening of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in the Manhattan borough of New York, U.S., May 7, 2018. Ventura, 37, alleges that Combs raped her near the end of their relationship in 2018 when she broached the idea of leaving him. Combs' lawyer, Ben Brafman, issued a statement saying his client "vehemently denies these offensive and outrageous allegations." The lawsuit filed Thursday depicted Combs, who has formerly gone by such monikers as P. Diddy, Puff Daddy and Diddy, as an erratic, controlling individual with violent tendencies aimed at Ventura and others. The lawsuit cites violations of sex trafficking and human trafficking statutes under federal, New York and California laws.

In preparing financial statements, also known as compilations, accountants need only documentation used to determine the value of assets, like Trump’s skyscrapers, golf courses and other properties. The firm cut ties with Trump last year and said his financial statements “should no longer be relied upon” after James raised concerns about their accuracy. James, a Democrat, alleges Trump, his company and top executives exaggerated his wealth by billions of dollars on the financial statements by inflating property values. On the stand Tuesday, Flemmons echoed Trump’s longstanding assertion that disclaimers on the financial statements insulated him from liability for discrepancies or misstatements. Trump has argued that, if anything, his financial statements undervalued how much his properties were worth.

When Tina Swedrup, its current co-owner, received his message, “I of course Googled him,” she says. “My motto was ‘keep it simple,’” says Zanini, who counts traditional Swedish rag rugs and the distinctively glazed mid-20th-century pottery by Berndt Friberg among his inspirations. In preparation for the process, Zanini had to handpick threads in 1,800 different hues. The resulting mélange creates the illusion that the stripes are rippling like the surface of a stream. “I thought, ‘It will never match the beauty [Måås-Fjetterström] created in her lifetime,’” says Zanini, whose rugs are available made to order from the company’s permanent collection.

A new report has an ominous warning for air travelers. "No matter what you do on a plane, you're probably annoying another passenger," it states. "When the unwritten rules of airlines etiquette are broached, it can lead to conflict," writes Lindsey Roeschke, a travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult who authored the report. Nearly one in five respondents said concerns about other passengers' behavior may deter them from taking a trip. Some 77% of people in the survey said they were "bothered" by it, with 51% saying they were "very bothered."

In the wake of Matthew Perry's death at 54, fans in China are mourning the loss of the star who felt less like a distant celebrity and more like an old friend. “People shared their own memories about Chandler and ‘Friends’ and many teared up.”A large poster displayed on the bar featured pictures of Perry over the years. Once Chinese fans added Mandarin subtitles to the show, which ran in the U.S. from 1994 to 2004, it quickly gained a following. “This TV show actually offered a way to imagine this kind of so-called metropolitan utopian imagination.”Many Chinese fans learned English through watching the show and got a peek into American life and culture. “It feels like I just got to know this long-lost friend, but he’s just gone.”___Fu Ting reported from Washington.

In the Minnesota case, the plaintiffs are asking the state’s highest court to declare that Trump is disqualified and direct the secretary of state to keep him off the ballot for the state’s March 5 primary. But as awful as the melee was, and as disturbing as the rioters’ actions were, it was not a war upon the United States,” they wrote in an earlier filing. The Minnesota Supreme Court justices have scheduled just over an hour for oral arguments Thursday. The Minnesota case was filed by Free Speech For People, while the Colorado case came from another long-established group with significant legal resources, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. In Colorado, ballot challenges first go to a judge for a hearing and then can be appealed to the state Supreme Court.

Qatar, a wealthy Gulf Arab state with diplomatic ambitions, is pressing both sides to engage in more talks and reach "understandings," sources told Reuters earlier. The diplomat described the New York meetings as "talks for talks," saying the idea was to lay the ground for future indirect discussions to achieve an "understanding" on the nuclear issue. Washington suspects Iran's nuclear program may be aimed at developing nuclear arms, a charge Iran denies. The United States also says Iran has provided one-way attack drones for Russia to strike Ukraine and wants Tehran to stop. The Biden administration's efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal have failed and many diplomats now regard it as beyond resurrection because of Iran's nuclear advances.

CNN —The Kristen Welker era of “Meet the Press” is off to a bleak start. Unfortunately, Welker failed spectacularly to meet the moment during her interview with Trump. Welker allowed Trump to make a number of statements wholly untethered to reality on a range of critical issues without tenacious, resolute, or meaningful pushback. It’s arguable that, at this juncture, there is really no need to interview Trump. If it is necessary to interview Trump, newsrooms need to approach the task differently than they would any other interview.

Special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday evening made note of the ongoing harm in a legal filing on a procedural matter. They asked Chutkan to overturn the motion she had granted and allow them at least 14 days to respond. Chutkan ultimately granted Trump’s motion to vacate but told his defense team they had only until Monday to respond. But the admission in Smith’s filing that Trump’s social media presence threatens to prejudice the jury pool is a long time coming. None of the judges overseeing the various cases has yet to punish Trump for pushing the limits of his release in daily social media commentaries – though Chutkan has broached the issue.

"We are going to continue building bike lanes," he told Reuters. Vox has also pledged to repeal Spain's climate law, which establishes an obligation to create LEZs in cities. "Bike lanes have to be useful and not generate social alarm, so each municipality has to analyse the most appropriate location," a PP official told Reuters. An expansion of the criteria for medically assisted death that comes into force in March 2024 will allow Canadians like Pauli, whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, to choose medically assisted death. In 2021, the most recent year available, 10,064 people died through medically assisted death, about 3.3% of deaths in Canada that year. Dembo served on an expert panel on assisted death and mental illness that presented a report to Canada's parliament last year. loadingThe reported cases of people resorting to medically assisted death in part due to lack of supports are "tragic," Lametti said. Pronoun EtiquetteIs it OK when first talking alone with a new colleague to ask pronouns to ensure you are referring to them correctly, if it hasn’t already been broached? Asking about pronouns simply removes any ambiguity and ensures that you’re always referring to your colleagues in the manner they prefer. They should value your safety and ensure that you work in an environment that doesn’t tolerate discrimination of any kind. I wish at least some of the time they would affirm my they/them pronouns, which help me feel seen and known. Am I making this too hard for my colleagues by not making a firm request to always use they/them?

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) - CIA director William Burns visited China last month for talks with Chinese counterparts, two U.S. officials said on Friday as Washington seeks to boost communications with Beijing. Burns, a veteran U.S. diplomat before leading the CIA, has made dozens of sensitive overseas trips as head of the agency, including to hold talks with Russian counterparts, as well as the Taliban in Afghanistan. The CIA, which does not regularly announce such visits, declined to comment on the China trip. Ties between the world's two largest economies are strained over issues ranging from Taiwan and China's human rights record to military activity in the South China Sea. "That's why we're also ready to engage China without preconditions, helping ensure that competition is managed, and that competition does not veer into conflict," Sullivan said.

For her, full-time freelance writing was a torturous cycle of overwork and underpayment. I left a previous full-time job on February 28, 2020, right as the COVID-19 pandemic took America — and my job prospects — by surprise. I learned a lot from it, though, and I'd hope that my experience can help a different freelancer or potential freelancer on their journey. My pay rate remained dismal. It was a valuable experience that taught me a lot — but I won't miss it for a second.
