Yellen to step up campaign touting Biden's economic record

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks alongside Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo during a Cabinet Meeting at the White House on June 06, 2023 in Washington, DC. The Biden administration is dispatching U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to Chicago and Milwaukee this week as part of a stepped-up domestic travel schedule to sell Americans on the benefits of President Joe Biden's economic policies. Yellen will make the case in remarks to the Economic Club of Chicago on Thursday that the pandemic recovery was faster, fairer and more transformative than previous economic recoveries, the Treasury said late on Sunday. Yellen has previously touted Biden's investment legislation, taking trips to North Carolina and Boston in recent weeks, but has avoided direct comparisons with former President Donald Trump. After her speech in Chicago, Yellen will travel to Milwaukee on Jan. 26 to visit a worker training facility, partly funded by Biden's $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief law, the American Rescue Plan Act.

The closer you look at the teen (and even tween) skin care craze, the more blemishes appear. The modern rebranding of “beauty products” to “skin care” - reminiscent of that of “diets” to “lifestyles”- implies that simply leaving your skin alone is tantamount to negligence. In 2020, clinical skin care brand Murad enlisted high-school influencers to promote its rejuvenating serums on Instagram. Considering how many such products tend to feature in the average online skin care routine, the potential cost overall is breathtaking. The most worrying thing about today’s skin care craze isn’t just that the financial and emotional buy-in are completely out of proportion to the “need” being addressed.

“ The most preventive skin care product that anyone can use is sunscreen,” she added. That is why it might not be the best idea to try to curb a tween or teen’s skin care obsession by saying, “You shouldn’t care so much about skin care,” Hida said. It is also important to keep an eye on whether an interest in skin care is a normal part of self-exploration or a sign of deeper issues. Families are the experts on their kids, Hida said, and she suggests looking for signs like fixated worry over appearance or a rigid skin care regimen. Skin care itself isn’t concerning, but how a person responds to it is what determines whether it is healthy or not, Hida said.

CNN —A weekend of ferocious political exchanges laid out the tumultuous reality of the 2024 White House campaign less than a year from Election Day. The fight for the GOP nomination is about far more than a horse race between candidates. Time is quickly ebbing for one of his distant Republican rivals to recast the race less than two months before voting begins. No lawyer, White House staffer, campaign adviser, political party or institution has ever been able to curb Trump’s impulses. “We are turning up the heat and brightening the spotlight on exactly what it would look like if he’s allowed back in the White House,” a Biden campaign official told CNN’s Arlette Saenz of Trump.

Futures contracts on orange juice, live cattle, raw sugar and cocoa each hit their highs for the year this month. The higher prices add another layer of pain to consumers' wallets at a time when stubborn core inflation, excluding food and energy, stood at 4.3% in August. The juice futures market reached a record $3.50 per pound this month. Meat prices have been driven by shrinking U.S. cattle herds, continued beef demand, plus higher input costs for labor and fuel. Shoppers are bearing the brunt of the higher prices as the world's largest food companies try and pass along their rising input costs.

That data indicates that the Federal Reserve is still likely to hold rates steady next week, some investors say. Inflation: US inflation climbed 3.7% in August from the prior year, marking an acceleration for the second consecutive month, according to the latest Consumer Price Index. Excluding the boost from gas station sales, retail spending added 0.2% in August from July. Traders see a roughly 97% chance that the central bank keeps rates unchanged in September, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. The central bank has now raised its main interest rate at 10 consecutive meetings, taking it to the highest level since the launch of the euro currency in 1999.

Mexico's Election Year Deficit Plan Fuels Fear Over Finances

By Dave Graham and Diego OréMEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The Mexican government's plan to run up the biggest budget deficit in decades during the 2024 general election year could put pressure on public finances and eventually threaten its credit rating, analysts said on Monday. Lopez Obrador last week backed former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as his party's candidate to succeed him. Historic data show the projected budget deficit for 2024 will be the highest since 1988 as a proportion of GDP. The government's higher spending plans should bolster Latin America's second-biggest economy, which has outpaced forecasts this year, brightening the outlook for 2024. He also noted that since Mexico's current account deficit is currently considerably lower than foreign direct investment, there was a pool of untapped demand in the economy that the government could temporarily offset via higher spending.

Election ads running on Google and YouTube that are created with artificial intelligence will soon have to carry a clear disclosure, according to new rules created by the company. The policy will take effect in mid-November and will require election advertisers to disclose that ads containing AI-generated elements have been computer-generated or do not show real events. Election ads that have been digitally created or altered must include a disclosure such as, "This audio was computer-generated," or "This image does not depict real events." Google and other digital ad platforms such as Meta's Facebook and Instagram already have some policies around election ads and digitally altered posts. In 2018, for example, Google began requiring an identity verification process to run election ads on its platforms.

Diamonds can change hands 20 to 30 times between mine and market, according to Hans Merket, a researcher with the International Peace Information Service, an independent research agency. “It will be important to find the right balance between ambition and realism,” he added, as it could take “years rather than months to get all noses in the right direction and reorganize this complex global supply chain.”Another headache? Russia is known for producing small diamonds that are mostly sold in very large quantities. The new G7 sanctions likely would cover only finished stones of one carat or larger, Mr. Brooks-Rubin said, although smaller gems may be included later. “But our industry is also very fragmented and global, with many in the trade who still won’t fall under its remit.”

Oil prices are up 20% and energy stocks are rebounding

New York CNN —Energy stocks are making a comeback after being left for dead earlier this year. Energy stocks faltered in the beginning of the year, defying investors’ expectations for last year’s boom to accelerate on a lack of global supply. That drop in energy stocks came despite OPEC+ producers, the cartel of oil producing countries plus Russia, announcing several output cuts in a bid to bump up crude prices. US WTI crude oil prices have gained 22% since June 11, while global benchmark Brent is up by 19%. CNN —Stocks and consumer sentiment are rising in tandem after slumping last year, in another sign of growing optimism that the economy could dodge a recession. Consumer sentiment tracked by the University of Michigan jumped 13% in July, notching its second consecutive month of improvement. That comes after stocks and consumer sentiment tumbled in 2022 as sticky inflation and the Federal Reserve’s aggressive pace of interest rate hikes spurred fears that the US economy would tip into a recession. “Consumer sentiment reached levels consistent with the lows of some past recessions last summer,” wrote Lori Calvasina, head of US equity strategy at RBC Capital Markets. Still, consumer sentiment could decline if more people lose their jobs, paychecks and spending power.

Data for May was revised to show import prices declining 0.4% instead of the previously reported 0.6%. Though consumer inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target, the pace of increase has slowed sharply since peaking in June 2022, giving consumers some relief. INFLATION EXPECTATIONS ANCHOREDThough the survey's inflation expectations increased this month, that was probably because most consumers were interviewed before the release of June's consumer price index report. "Import prices are subtracting from the pernicious trend of the goods inflation Americans have been paying." There were decreases in the cost of nonagricultural industrial supplies and materials as well as food, which canceled out rises in prices for capital goods, consumer goods and motor vehicles.

NASA’s Webb telescope image shows details of Saturn
  + stars: | 2023-07-04 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Astronomers have discovered surprising details about Saturn’s atmosphere, using a new image captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. In the image, Saturn itself appears extremely dark due to the near-total absorption of sunlight by methane gas. The image was taken with Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, known as NIRCam, as part of a Webb program that involves several exceptionally deep exposures of Saturn, according to NASA. This latest detailed image comes just weeks after the Webb telescope spotted a record-breaking water plume erupting from Saturn’s moon Enceladus, which feeds Saturn’s diffuse E ring, according to NASA. In the future, additional and deeper exposures from Webb will help astronomers examine fainter rings around Saturn, according to NASA.
