U.S. factories remained in slowdown mode in August, fueling fears about where the economy is headed, according to separate manufacturing gauges. Demand continues to be weak, output declined, and inputs stayed accommodative," said Timothy Fiore, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. While the index level suggests contraction in the manufacturing sector, Fiore pointed out that any reading above 42.5% generally points to expansion across the broader economy. Another weak economic reading raises the probability the Federal Reserve will be cutting interest rates by at least a quarter percentage point later this month. "A further downward lurch in the PMI points to the manufacturing sector acting as an increased drag on the economy midway through the third quarter.

Tesla has stemmed downside risk in its electric vehicle business and is exposed to "powerful emerging drivers" related to artificial intelligence and future energy demand, leaving it a better bet than Ford as the best stock in the auto industry, according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Adam Jonas has a $310 price target for Tesla, implying 40% upside from Friday's close of $219.80. Tesla's cost cutting and restructuring has helped lower the breakeven point at which it can generate positive cash flow, Jonas wrote. The Elon Musk-led company is also benefiting from zero emission credits that amount to $2,000 per vehicle, the analyst said. The automaker also has a strong position in the energy storage market, with investors starting to consider that Tesla may benefit from a historic increase in electricity demand, according to the analyst.

Eighteen months on, Adani — who has denied any wrongdoing — has largely recovered from the broadside and the tiny US short seller has revealed how much it made betting against the Indian billionaire: just over $4 million. In its blistering report last year, Hindenburg had accused the Adani Group of “brazen stock manipulation” and questioned the “sky-high” valuations of the ports-to-power conglomerate’s firms. Hindenburg said it had taken a short position in the group’s companies, meaning it would benefit if their shares fell. The short seller, named after the 1937 airship disaster, said in Monday’s statement that it made just $4.1 million in gross revenue through gains related to Adani short positions from a relationship with unnamed investor and about “$31,000 through our own short of Adani US bonds.”“Net of legal and research expenses (including time, salaries/compensation, and costs for a 2-year global investigation) we may come out ahead of breakeven on our Adani short,” it added. The Adani Group immediately denounced the accusations as “baseless” and “malicious,” but failed to halt the staggering stock market meltdown that followed.

SLB (SLB) has been on our radar for some time and its recent underperformance produces an interesting opportunity to gain long exposure with substantial upside potential. That's nearly a 35% discount to the average S & P 500 stock, implying that the technical upside target is well within its historical valuation range. With low volatility, options prices on SLB are extremely inexpensive and would benefit from a simple strategy such as buying a call option. Additionally, we are only risking 7.7% of the stock's price to gain unlimited upside exposure. U.S. crude oil gained more than 1% on Tuesday after booking a loss last week as the market focuses on an upcoming key OPEC+ meeting. OPEC+ will hold a virtual meeting on Sunday to review its production policy. Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Hsueh said OPEC+ countries are unlikely to raise production given that the current price of Brent is closer to $80 per barrel than $90 per barrel. Tamas Varga, analyst with oil broker PVM, said he expects "no changes in production will be forthcoming" because the meeting is virtual. And the stabilization of U.S. production since September has given OPEC some room to maneuver, he said.

This year the rate markets have come back to a more sensible reality after flirting with the la-la land of 7 cuts. And all the while, the more sensible equity markets have paid only fleeting attention to their rate brother's whining. As a guy who was brought up in the fixed income and currency markets, I'm increasingly finding more sensibility in the equity markets as I head into later stages of my career. Having five-year inflation expectations (as measured by the 5-year breakeven inflation rate) never ramp higher while cumulative inflation surged around 20% since January 2021 is a testament to his stalwart success. There have been no fumbles at the Fed so far during a protracted fight to ensure anchored inflation expectations and long term price stability.
