CNN —Dozens of employees at Italian fashion house Gucci staged a strike on Monday to protest the company’s decision to move its design office from Rome to Milan. CGIL has argued that asking staff to move to Milan, approximately 300 miles north of the capital, in the first half of 2024 was tantamount to laying them off. With fewer shoppers heading to Burberry stores, clinching a sale will be key. The label has filled its stores with new styles across a wider price range, including a renewed emphasis on its staple outerwear. At Burberry he has applied colourful dandelion prints to garments and rolled out advertising campaigns with fuzzy ducklings. "We like what Burberry is doing with product and range architecture, however, the timing is not ideal," said analysts at RBC. Burberry Chief Financial Officer Kate Ferry said the company was "absolutely committed to protecting all of the consumer-facing areas".

☆ Britain's Burberry hit by slowdown in luxury spending

LONDON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Britain's Burberry (BRBY.L) said it was being hit by a global slowdown in luxury spending and it would struggle to meet its annual revenue forecast of low double-digit growth, with a knock-on impact on profit, if it continued. Demand in China, however, fell away in the second quarter from a strong bounce back from the impact of COVID lockdowns. Burberry said spending by Chinese luxury consumers had shifted overseas from mainland China. Tourist growth benefited European destinations, it said, with just over half of spending in the region coming from international visitors. But a weak performance in the Americas worsened in the quarter, with comparable store sales down 10%.

After three years of record growth, luxury companies are feeling the pain as sales slow to a more normal pace. Nowhere have the struggles of the luxury sector been more prominent than in the French conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton , the group's bellwether. This dynamic tends to hurt the less-prestigious luxury brands more, according to Rogerio Fujimori, an analyst at Stifel. "Chinese [consumers] are back to Southeast Asia and Japan, but there's still a long way to go in terms of Europe. LVMH and other European luxury brands have been market leaders among European equities since 2021 until the first half of 2023.

I thought pantyhose were dead, but now it seems as if they are being treated as the equivalent of actual pants. Are we really supposed to believe the pantyhose-instead-of-pants look I see on social media is going to be a trend? The fashion world became so attached to the End of Pantyhose that editors famously went to shows in February with bare legs and high heels, snow be damned. Then, in September 2022, Matthieu Blazy of Bottega Veneta sent a navy crew neck down his runway paired with only dark hose and heels. Just a few months later, Miuccia Prada largely tossed pants and skirts out the window in her Miu Miu show, subversively matching her librarian cardigans and beatnik polo necks with sheer hose and coordinating undies.

Jacob Elordi was seen this summer in an array of it bags, including this burgundy Valentino Loco bag. Indeed, men wearing bags are consistently the butt of jokes in internet memes, comic strips, and even stand-up comedy sets. Doubtless it’s a dedication appreciated by the likes of James, Elordi, A$AP and Tyler, whose street style looks contribute further proof — were any needed — that man purses are enjoying a newfound socio-cultural appreciation.

LVMH (LVMH.PA), the world's biggest luxury group and one of Europe's biggest companies by market value, this month also reported a slowdown in third-quarter sales -- although it still clocked an increase in revenues with sales at its fashion and leather goods division up 9%. And Birkin bag-maker Hermes on Tuesday reported a rise in sales of 15.6%. Kering has undertaken a sweeping overhaul aimed at reviving Gucci, which has struggled to capitalise on the strong post-pandemic rebound in luxury goods sales and lost ground to rivals like LVMH's Dior and Louis Vuitton.

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Chiarello, a chef known for his Italian-inspired Californian restaurants who won an Emmy Award for best host for “Easy Entertaining With Michael Chiarello" and appeared on Bravo’s “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters,” has died. Chiarello died Friday at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa due to an allergic reaction that resulted in anaphylactic shock, according to Chiarello’s restaurant group Gruppo Chiarello. He also owned the Chiarello Family Vineyards in Yountville, California. Their sterile Milan showspace had been made a sanctuary, with sunshine filtered through legions of white paper strips hung from the skylight. Guests in attendance seemed visibly soothed, as if waiting to ascend into heaven, or at least lounging in a five-star spa. This sense of ease pervaded spring’s best shows and clothes, which shirked recent seasons’ gimmicks, flash and frippery and instead brought women feel-good outfits for everyday.

The 37-year-old creative director's spring-summer 2024 collection, a highlight of London Fashion Week, introduced interlink chain prints and a new vibrant "Knight Blue" colour. Silhouettes on Monday's catwalk were elongated and accessorised with padded bags in khaki as well as leather structured bags in red, white and green. The designer is tasked with expanding Burberry's leather goods and accessories offerings.

Putting a price on celebrityIn buying a majority stake in the powerhouse Hollywood talent agency Creative Artists Agency, François-Henri Pinault showed that high-ticket M.&A. is a game that more than one French luxury billionaire can play. Acquiring CAA — which represents stars including Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and Pinault’s wife, Salma Hayek Pinault — underscores Pinault’s ambitions, and reinforces the growing importance of celebrity in the luxury sector. Like his archrival, Bernard Arnault of LVMH, Pinault used a series of acquisitions to assemble the luxury empire now known as Kering, starting with Gucci and later adding Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen and more. The agency will be run separately from Kering; Bryan Lourd, the superagent who represents Scarlett Johansson and Brad Pitt, will become C.E.O.
