REUTERS/Thomas Peter/Files Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - China's top energy official has called for more secrecy in the country’s energy sector to protect national security in an increasingly hostile international environment. U.S. officials are keen to play down analogies between the intensifying strategic rivalry between China and the United States and the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The result is likely to be a more suspicious and cautious approach to cooperation on energy issues including emissions reductions. He warned about the increasing information security risks posed by smart phones, social media and hacking. Zhang called for “sober awareness” of these challenges and correct handling of the relationship between energy supply and energy security.

Energy consumption grew everywhere apart from Europe, including Eastern Europe. Renewables, excluding hydropower, accounted for 7.5% of global energy consumption, around 1% higher than the previous year. The share of fossil fuels in global energy consumption remained at 82%. Most oil demand growth came from revived appetite for jet fuel and diesel-related products. Europe accounted for much of LNG demand growth, increasing its imports by 57%, while countries in the Asia-Pacific region and South and Central America reduced purchases.

Helmet-cam appears to show American soldiers fighting Russian forces in Ukraine. The footage shows them dodging bullets and mortar blasts as they try to seek cover and intense fire. The American soldiers run through the barren land, at times tripping over in the rubble. Most of these fighters joined the International Legion, while others joined the army itself or worked to help Ukrainian forces in other capacities. Several American volunteers have died battling Russian forces in Ukraine.

[1/2] Steam and smoke billow from the Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal-fired power station near Nottingham, Britain, December 1, 2017. Britain has a target to close its coal-fired power plants by October 2024 as part of efforts to cut fossil fuel emissions and meet its 2050 net-zero target. A market notice, published by the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) showed it has asked for the unit to be ready on Monday afternoon. National Grid ESO did not comment on why the notification had been issued. Gas-fired power plants were providing around 41% of the country’s electricity on Monday, with wind power lower than usual, providing just 7%.

Fighting escalates in Sudan's capital after ceasefire expires

The ceasefire between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had started on May 22 and expired on Saturday evening. Beyond the capital, deadly fighting has also broken out in Darfur in the far west of Sudan, already grappling with long-running unrest and huge humanitarian challenges. There was no comment from the army, which has been using war planes to target the RSF spread out across the capital. Fighting in the capital has led to widespread damage and looting, a collapse in health services, power and water cuts, and dwindling food supplies. Hemedti's whereabouts are unclear though he appeared in video footage with his troops in central Khartoum earlier in the fighting.

Astronomers observe star swallowing planet for first time
  + stars: | 2023-05-03 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —In a world first, scientists have observed the moment that a dying star consumed a planet — a fate that eventually awaits Earth. Astronomers observed this as a white-hot flash, followed by a longer-lasting colder signal, which they later deduced was caused by the star engulfing a planet. “That infrared data made me fall off my chair,” De said, with the readings suggesting the star could have been merging with another star. However, further analysis using readings from NASA’s infrared space telescope, NEOWISE, revealed that the star was in fact consuming a planet. Our own planet will meet the same fate, but not for 5 billion years, researchers say.
A helmet-cam video shows Ukrainian troops storming a Russian trench. Soliders of the 108th Mountain Assault Battalion used grenades and machine guns capturing 2 POWs. The Ukrainian troops fired several shots toward the trench as the Russian defenders attempted to return fire. The video cuts to the Ukrainian troops surrounding the trench as two Russian soldiers crawl out and surrender to them. The helmet-cam video demonstrates how intimate frontline fighting can be in Ukraine, with troops from both sides coming in close contact.
