U.S. crude oil rose 1 % on Friday, topping $83 per barrel as consumer prices eased and inventories fall. The recent oil rally has stalled out with West Texas Intermediate largely flat this week, ahead 0.38%, after booking four-straight weeks of gains. U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories also fell for the week ended July 5, in a sign that summer fuel demand may be finding some life. OPEC and the International Energy Agency once again sent conflicting demand signals. JPMorgan sees a global oil demand gain of 1.4 million bpd this year.

"I broke the one rule you should never ever break," the 9News Denver meteorologist told his followers. Advertisement"It was a fun trip, and I did not have to work the next day," Bianchi told BI. But rather than shuttling money into strengthening its grid to make sure the lights and A/C stay on during increasingly extreme weather, Texas is pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into new natural gas-fired power plants. Adding more electricity to the grid isn’t necessarily a bad thing because the state is facing higher demand, said Texas energy expert Doug Lewin, founder of consulting firm Stoic Energy. The state prioritizes natural gas power plants or backup natural gas generator systems. Centerpoint and other Texas utilities are no stranger to extreme weather. “In addition to extreme weather, the company’s service area also experiences heavy precipitation and extreme temperatures,” the company wrote in the report.

“We look at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby, (because) he was still alive,” Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory said this week. Detectives eventually learned the 4-year-old had last been seen on Saturday with his mother, Aaliyah Jack, 25, of Lake Charles, and his 1-year-old brother, the sheriff’s office said. The 1-year-old was found near mile marker 10 – about 9 miles from the rest stop where his brother had been found dead the day before, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to a hospital and later released to the state Department of Children and Family Services, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent told CNN. Mexico City CNN —Heavy rains associated with Hurricane Beryl and the earlier Tropical Storm Alberto have led at least 200 crocodiles to enter urban areas in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, across from Texas, state and federal authorities said this week. So far, authorities say they have captured and relocated around 200 of the big reptiles since Alberto pelted the region with rain in June. Beryl brushed the same area before making landfall in south Texas earlier this week. Authorities said the heavy rains raised water levels in coastal lagoons, leading the animals to crawl into cities like Tampico and the nearby cities of Ciudad Madero and Altamira, where at least 165 crocodiles have been captured and relocated. When the power goes out in Houston, some neighborhoods are filled with the sound of gas-powered backup generators, creating an instant sonic guide to the city’s social divisions. In wealthier parts of the city, the sheer number of generators can create a pervasive roar. In other neighborhoods, there is a low rumble from a handful of machines — or just one. “My neighbor has it just for his fridge,” said Theresa Del Bosque, 62, describing the rare home in her north Houston area with a generator. “Most people cannot afford it.”With around a million customers still without power on Thursday, more than three days after Hurricane Beryl tore through the city, the question of who has a generator, and who can get one, has become an urgent one.

Oil prices tick up as crude, gasoline inventories ease
  + stars: | 2024-07-11 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices edged higher on Thursday as crude stocks fell after U.S. refineries ramped up processing and as gasoline inventories eased, signaling stronger demand. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 36 cents, or 0.5%, to $82.47 a barrel. U.S. crude inventories fell by 3.4 million barrels to 445.1 million barrels in the week ended July 5, far exceeding analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.3 million-barrel draw. Gasoline stocks fell by 2 million barrels to 229.7 million barrels, much bigger than the 600,000-barrel draw analysts expected during the U.S. Fourth of July holiday week. Lower interest rates decrease the cost of borrowing, which can boost economic activity and oil demand.

CNN —A historically hot summer in the United States is on a July killing spree and the toll will only grow with the hottest days yet to come. It’s been the hottest summer on record to date for around 100 US cities from Maine to California. Nine were over the age of 65, the county medical examiner told CNN. At least 10 suspected heat deaths are being reported in Oregon. The region is still typically quite hot in July even without heat reaching record levels daily.

June was the Earth’s 13th consecutive month to break a global heat record. It beat the record set last year for the hottest June on record, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union. “We need to be preparing for more heat, more often. That’s the reality.”More than half the U.S. population — almost 175 million people — faced extreme heat on July 4, and the impacts of this new normal continued to broil the country this week. The sun felt hotter than usual in Houston this week, as millions of sweltering residents emerged from the rapid thrashing of Hurricane Beryl to face a prolonged power outage — the largest ever seen by the city’s utility, according to the state’s lieutenant governor. The outages from the storm affected as many as 2.7 million customers across the state, mostly in and around Houston. Despite a promise by the utility, CenterPoint Energy, to restore power to one million customers by the end of the day on Wednesday, large swaths of the nation’s fourth-biggest city remained without power. The scale of the outages raised questions about whether enough had been done to prepare the city, just 50 miles from the Gulf Coast, for the kinds of storms that climate scientists predict will arrive with greater frequency. “For a Category 1 hurricane to result in over a million customer outages in its immediate aftermath demonstrates that there is plenty of need for the resiliency hardening investments,” said Wei Due, an energy expert with PA Consulting and a former senior analyst and engineer for Con Edison.

CNN —Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft and its crew have been in space for more than a month — much longer than the weeklong stay initially expected. I mean, truly amazing,” Butch Wilmore, one of two NASA astronauts helming this mission, said in a Wednesday news briefing. The pump’s failure “put us in a position where we’d have to store an awful lot of urine,” said Dana Weigel, manager for NASA’s International Space Station Program, before the flight. Oil prices rebounded on Wednesday following three days of declines after an industry report showed U.S. crude and fuel stockpiles fell last week, indicating steady demand, and the outlook for interest rate cuts improved. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 26 cents to $81.67 a barrel, after falling 1.1% in the previous session. Following Powell's comments investors continued to put a nearly 70% probability on a Fed rate cut in September. The outlook for higher oil prices was also supported by a U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) report on Tuesday showing global oil demand will outpace supply next year, reversing a prior forecast for a surplus. In Texas, oil and gas companies restarted some operations on Tuesday after Hurricane Beryl lashed the state, while some facilities sustained damage and power had not been fully restored.

Oil prices held firm Wednesday as OPEC sees solid demand supported by stronger economic growth this year. OPEC maintained its oil demand growth forecast of 2.2 million barrels per day for 2024. Here are today's energy prices:The oil market is waiting to see if U.S. inventory data will confirm expectations that the market is tightening. Summer fuel demand has had a soft start, but a big draw of 12.2 million barrels of crude and 2.2 million barrels of gasoline for the week ended June 28 indicated that activity was picking up. Analysts polled by Reuters expect crude stocks fell by 1.3 million barrels last week, and gasoline inventories declined by 600,000 barrels.

When Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm last week, it broke records and left a trail of damage across the Caribbean. The first named hurricane of the season, Beryl is the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, and also the first Category 4 hurricane to form in the Atlantic in the month of June — a portent of what experts say is a hurricane season that will be much more intense than usual. Hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with most storms developing between mid-August and mid-October. If you’re planning to travel during this hurricane season, here’s what you should know. How bad will hurricane season be this year?

More than 1.3 million utility customers in the Houston area were still without power on Wednesday, two days after Hurricane Beryl swept destructively through the region. Hot, steamy weather on the heels of the storm left many people in the region to swelter without air conditioning. As many as 144 million people across the United States were under National Weather Service heat advisories on Wednesday, from the West and Pacific Northwest to Southeast Texas and many major cities on the East Coast. Large areas of California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, and the corridor from Washington, D.C., to New Jersey were under excessive heat warnings, indicating “extremely dangerous heat conditions.” Forecasters expect dangerous conditions to persist in the West for several more days and to redevelop in the Southeast later in the week.

A day after Tropical Storm Beryl struck Houston with deadly force, flooding roads and highways and killing at least seven people in Texas and an eighth in Louisiana, officials were struggling to restore power for millions of residents as hot weather returned to the region. But the force of its winds still left Houston residents reeling for the second time in two months after a deadly system of thunderstorms crashed through the city in May. The storm had sustained winds of 65 m.p.h. as it passed through Houston but also produced damaging, hurricane-force wind gusts above 80 m.p.h. Two of the confirmed deaths from the storm in the Houston area on Monday involved trees that fell into homes, crushing people inside.
