Before his audition for “The Ally,” a new play by Itamar Moses, the actor Michael Khalid Karadsheh printed out the monologue that his character, Farid, a Palestinian student at an American university, would give in the second act. The speech cites both the Mideast conflict’s specific history and Farid’s personal testimony of, he says, “the experience of moving through the world as the threat of violence incarnate.” Karadsheh — who booked the part — was bowled over. “I don’t think anyone has said these words about Palestine on a stage in New York in such a clear, concise, beautiful, poetic way,” said Karadsheh, whose parents are from Jordan and who has ancestors who were from Birzeit in the West Bank. Farid’s speech sits alongside others, though, in Moses’s play: one delivered by an observant Jew branding much criticism of Israel as antisemitic; another by a Black lawyer connecting Israel’s policies toward Palestinians to police brutality in the United States; another by a Korean American bemoaning the mainstream’s overlooking of East Asians. These speeches are invariably answered by rebuttals, which are answered by their own counter-rebuttals, all by characters who feel they have skin in the game.

By Ariba ShahidKARACHI (Reuters) - Higher living costs and political uncertainty have muted Pakistan's once boisterous election campaigns, with both candidates and those who supply them with materials bemoaning the need to do more with much less. Syed Arsalan Haider, a Karachi printer, said the cost of a square foot of banner was up by 130% since the last election. Khan, whose party won the last election, says the military wants to keep him from power, which the military denies. Meherbano Qureshi, a PTI candidate and daughter of the party's jailed vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, said people were scared to show their support and hang campaign material. The uprising that began nearly three weeks ago with the toppling of Speaker Kevin McCarthy has now weakened three of the most powerful figures in the House GOP. Twisting colored squares together in the right order seems simple by comparison with attempts to unite a House Republican conference unable to comprehend how clownish it looks. “We need (a speaker) because the House can’t do anything without a speaker,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen because if we don’t have a speaker of the House, we can’t govern. “This is embarrassing for the Republican Party.

Trump endorsed Jim Jordan for speaker of the House — but it won't be enough to get him the job. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe race to succeed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is on, and Rep. Jim Jordan just scored what may be the best outside endorsement a Republican could get — former President Donald Trump. Since Trump endorsed the Ohio Republican on Thursday evening, several House conservatives have done just that. Just ask former Rep. Liz Cheney, or any of the other House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump and were primaried out of a job. Trump doesn't have as much sway on Capitol Hill as you thinkThis may come as a surprise, but Republicans on Capitol Hill — even those that support his 2024 candidacy — ignore Trump all the time.

Those words from Marco Oliveira, a 50-year-old graphic designer from Portugal, underscore a deep lying annoyance in Europe with people bemoaning a lack of return on their savings despite surging interest rates. This, in practice, should translate into higher rates both on mortgages, but also on deposits. The key metric used by analysts is the deposit delta — which represents the increase in policy rates that banks pass through to the interest rates on deposits. For instance, Croatia's deposit delta is 12%, Cyprus is 30% and Portugal stands at 32%. And indeed, Portuguese banks show one of the lowest deposit delta, being the fifth worst in Europe," Teixeira said.

Rep. Jared Golden was one of just two Democrats who voted with the GOP to block Biden's student-debt relief in June. The Blue Dog Coalition, which Golden co-chairs, recently received a maximum contribution from student lender Sallie Mae. But Golden wrote in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that Sallie Mae's contribution did not sway his beliefs on student-debt relief. The Education Department is currently in the process of finalizing a new student-debt relief plan using the Higher Education Act. Meanwhile, other Democratic lawmakers are continuing to push for relief for borrowers — especially with the student-loan payment pause ending in September.

House Republicans appear increasingly likely to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is bemoaning the increased use of the measure. As they've teased a potential impeachment inquiry, House Republicans have zeroed in on unproven allegations that both Biden and his son, Hunter, accepted millions in bribes from a Ukrainian gas company. They are also looking into Hunter Biden's business dealings more broadly, hoping to turn up evidence that those activities substantively involved then-Vice President Biden or affected US policy. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader since 2007, opposed both the first and second impeachments of former President Donald Trump.

"You're too old to work at 35, but too young to retire at 60," one person wrote, bemoaning the "curse." It refers, specifically, to the typical Chinese employer's preference for hiring workers who haven't reached the sell-by date of their 35th birthday. And it's not just about finding work — Chinese workers being phased out at what was previously viewed as the prime of their careers means their livelihoods could be seriously affected. "At this point in time, youth unemployment is high, so many young workers are willing to work for less. Seah told Insider that increased competition for younger workers "will eventually drive up youth wages, making them relatively more expensive to hire."

Elon Musk predicts a "ChatGPT moment" for Tesla, and warns investors have a tough 12 months ahead. The Tesla, Twitter, and SpaceX chief spoke during his automaker's shareholder meeting and a CNBC interview on Tuesday. "I think Tesla will have a ChatGPT moment, maybe if not this year, I'd say no later than next year." And I think that's just generally true for the economy." And now I think they're going to be slow to lower them."
Musk's decree resolved an SEC lawsuit accusing him of defrauding investors with an Aug. 7, 2018, tweet that he had "funding secured" to take his electric car company private. Musk and Tesla each also paid $20 million in civil fines, and Musk gave up his role as chairman. But the three-judge appeals court panel said the SEC had opened just two subsequent inquiries into Musk's tweets, and those tweets "plausibly violated" the decree's terms. It also said Musk chose to allow screening of his tweets, and had no right to revisit the matter "because he has now changed his mind." The case is SEC v Musk, 2nd U.S.

Bischoff died on Tuesday of natural causes, a close relative, who asked not to be named, told Reuters on Wednesday. A former chairman of Lloyds Banking Group (LLOY.L), Citigroup (C.N) and more recently JP Morgan Securities (JPM.N), Bischoff had also been CEO of Schroders (SDR.L). Robert Swannell, former chairman of Marks & Spencer, who worked with Bischoff for 33 years at Schroders and later Citi, said he would profoundly mourn his friend and colleague. The deal was hailed as a huge success for Bischoff's leadership team, having started with a business worth just a fraction of the 1.3 billion pounds price Citi later paid. He returned to JP Morgan as chairman of JP Morgan Securities the same year.
