NEW YORK (AP) — TV's late-high hosts planned to return to their evening sketches and monologues by next week, reinstating the flow of topical humor silenced for five months by the newly-ended Hollywood’s writers strike. “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver was slated to return to the air Sunday. Scripted shows will take longer to return, with actors still on strike and no negotiations yet on the horizon. On artificial intelligence, the writers got the regulation and control of the emerging technology they had sought. ___For more on the writers and actors strikes, visit: https://apnews.com/hub/hollywood-strikes/

The iconic Hollywood sign is pictured the day after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced it reached a preliminary labor agreement with major studios in Los Angeles, California, U.S., September 25, 2023. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) leadership voted unanimously to end the strike on Wednesday, the guild said in a statement. In other areas, the guild said it won guarantees of minimum staffing in writers’ rooms, a key issue for many of its members. Maher and Drew Barrymore had angered writers by saying this month that their talk shows would return before the strike ended. The end of the WGA strike does not return Hollywood to normal.

The Writers Guild of America reached a tentative agreement with Hollywood studios on Sunday. AdvertisementAdvertisement"The WGA and AMPTPT have reached a tentative agreement," the AMPTP email said; the WGA's version was typo-free. The tentative agreement comes after the guild and the AMPTP — which represents major studios and streaming services, including Warner Bros. They were joined on the picket lines by over 160,000 union members of SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, on July 14. Broadcast networks' fall TV schedules were loaded with reality series, whose writers aren't subject to the WGA agreement.

Strike signs await striking SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) outside Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., July 25, 2023. The WGA, which represents 11,500 film and television writers, described the deal as "exceptional" with "meaningful gains and protections for writers." While writing may resume, the SAG-AFTRA actors' union remains on strike. Efforts to restart daytime talk shows without writers, such as "The Drew Barrymore Show," collapsed this month, in the face of criticism from striking writers and actors. Even as studio executives celebrated the end of the longest-running writers' strike since 1988, it is only half the labor battle.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA), which represents roughly 11,500 film and television writers, reached a preliminary three-year deal with major studios on Sunday. While actors remain on strike, late-night and daytime talk shows may resume production once their writers receive the Guild's greenlight to return to work in the coming days or weeks. Film and television producer Todd Garner said he expects that once actors reach a deal, scores of productions will race to restart at once. Major television shows and movies are contractually in first position with actors, Garner said. Its shares have dropped nearly 14% since the writers' strike started on May 2, while Paramount, Disney and Netflix have lost between 20% and 45%.

Now with streaming gains slowing, the revenues from those new subscribers aren’t fully offsetting what’s being lost. To the extent the strike left their fall TV lineups looking relatively bare, this was a loss for them and gift to the streaming services.

In what lasted for almost five months, the writer's strike has seemingly reached an end. In the last writers strike, in 2008, board members voted two days after a deal was reached, and members voted two days after that. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen will writers return to work and shows return? The studios that make up the AMPTP opted to finish a deal with writers — who went on strike two months earlier — before even beginning to deal with actors. It was three months into the writers strike before the AMPTP reached out to begin negotiations, and the initial talks sputtered after a just a few days.

But when will your favorite shows return? Late-night talk shows were the first to be affected when the strike began, and they may be among the first to return to air now. The actors strike limits promotional appearances that are the lifeblood of late-night shows. “Real Time with Bill Maher.” The host plotted a return without writers but ended up postponing once last week’s negotiations were set. Director Quentin Tarantino's 10th film, “The Movie Critic,” is among the scripts that are written whose makers are awaiting actors' return to sets.

As the actors’ strike continues on, most television shows and movies will not be able to resume without them. But late-night and daytime talk shows could return after the resolution of the writers’ strike, potentially bringing relief to one corner of the industry. There were no immediate announcements of shows returning to air. Some shows, including “The View,” have continued to air new episodes filmed without its unionized writers. Though the same was possible at other shows, many network hosts have opted to stay off the air, reluctant to be seen as not supporting the strikes.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Union leaders and Hollywood studios reached a tentative agreement Sunday to end a historic screenwriters strike after nearly five months, though no deal is yet in the works for striking actors. The Writers Guild of America announced the deal in a joint statement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the group that represents studios, streaming services and production companies in negotiations. “WGA has reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP,” the guild said in an email to members. The tentative deal to end the last writers strike, in 2008, was approved by more than 90% of members. In that walkout, the writers strike started first and ended second.

Here's a look at the steps to come for writers, and for the actors whose strike continues. In the last writers strike, in 2008, board members voted two days after a deal was reached, and members voted two days after that. But while the show's joke writers will be free to return, many of their usual guests will not, with the ongoing actors strike bringing limits on such appearances. Last week, Drew Barrymore took to Instagram to defend restarting her talk show amid a bitter writers’ strike, a move that her critics said amounted to crossing a picket line. Facing the camera, slightly off-center, in a room so heavily wallpapered even the ceiling wasn’t spared, she asked her 17 million followers for their understanding. “I know there’s just nothing I can do that will make this OK to those it is not OK with,” she said, a macramé wall hanging behind her. The homey setting was familiar. It’s an essential element of the celebrity apology video genre.

Zadie Smith Drops In; Drew Barrymore Is Eased Out

Zadie Smith’s new novel, “The Fraud,” is set in 19th-century England, and introduces a teeming cast of characters at the periphery of a trial in which the central figure claimed to be a long-lost nobleman entitled to a fortune. Smith drew many of the book’s details from the historical record — the trial and the main characters all existed much as they appear in the novel — but as she tells Sarah Lyall on this week’s episode, her archival research was far from dusty or dutiful. “‘Research’ makes it sound really heavy,” Smith says. “It was actually a joy to read about this period and to read books set in the period. We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review’s podcast in general.

New York CNN —The Writers Guild of America could be getting close to a deal to end a nearly five-month strike against Hollywood studios and streaming services. But filming of movies and shows would not be able to resume unless the union representing actors also reaches a deal. Many productions had halted even before SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike July 14. But who appears on those shows should they return before the end of the actors strike is unclear. SAG-AFTRA members are prohibited by union rules from promoting their films and shows while on strike.
