Apfel died on Friday at the age of 102, according to a post on her verified Instagram page. “I go at it full, I’m very passionate about what I do,” Apfel told CNN in an interview in 2018. Jemal Countess/WireImage/Getty Images“(Styling the White House) was a relatively easy job actually, because everything had to be as close as humanly possible to the way it was,” Apfel told the Guardian in 2015. The exhibition, “Rara Avis (Rare Bird),” was the first time the museum had paid tribute to a living woman who was not a fashion designer. Uber is going into the Dow Transports on Monday, marking the first change to the index since Dec. 7, 2021, when Old Dominion replaced Kansas City Southern. Under Dow Theory, the Transports should confirm a new high in the Dow Industrials. Uber is a funny add because unlike many of the other index components, it's not really a shipping company. The add likely reflects the Dow Transports index committee's belief that this is a transportation company, even if it just shuttles people instead of packages. This follows a well-known pattern called the S & P inclusion effect.

As the rally continues, it's wise to avoid overcrowded trades among hedge funds as herd mentality often leads to trouble in the stock market, according to Morgan Stanley. Investors in overcrowded trades could run the risk of getting caught in a losing bet when hedge funds, especially systematic traders, form a herd-like stampede to exit the same trades. Morgan Stanley found that hedge funds were most overweight in the consumer discretionary, industrials, and health-care sectors last quarter. Even though they have been extremely popular, these stocks tend to have outsized share counts that make hedge funds' ownership less significant. Avis Budget Group was the most over-owned stock by hedge funds at the end of 2023 with half of its outstanding float shares owned by the cohort, according to Morgan Stanley.

Walgreens has the dubious distinction of being one of the stocks that has had the shortest duration in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. At $22, Walgreens has the lowest stock price in the index, which traditionally would make it a target for replacement. "Since the indexes are price weighted, the Index Committee evaluates stock price when considering a company for inclusion. Right now, the highest priced stock, UnitedHealth Group , is more than 23 times the value of the lowest priced stock, Walgreens. Finally, one wonders how Uber executives feel about the decision to put them into the Dow Jones Transportation Index.

Investors now expect that the Fed will begin easing back rates in May or June, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Before the Bell: What does the Fed’s signal that it won’t cut rates in March mean for markets? I think what’s important for the markets themselves is the fact that the Fed has signaled they’re going to cut rates. So, they’re going to cut rates at some point this year, probably May or June is going to be the first cut that we get. There’s a lot of areas where your earnings … start to reaccelerate higher, and that’s a good thing.

Wall Street wrapped up another positive week, with the S & P 500 closing Friday above 5,000 for the first time ever. It was a pretty light week in terms of economic data releases, though we did get a favorable ISM Services number on Monday. Things will pick up next week with several closely watched macroeconomic updates, including two key government inflation reports. While no Club earnings are scheduled to report earnings in the week ahead, 61 companies in the S & P 500 will deliver their latest quarterly results. The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

Washington, DC CNN —The Fed’s fight against inflation is about to enter a new phase, but the central bank’s enormous balance sheet will continue to play a key role. The Fed also manages a multi-trillion-dollar balance sheet that accounts for trillions in government securities and lists how much currency is in circulation. For over a year now, the Fed has been steadily shrinking its balance sheet to help cool the economy. The Fed’s balance sheet is currently at around $7.9 trillion, down from its peak of $9 trillion in early 2022 right before the runoff. They also see alternative scenarios for the end of the balance sheet runoff if there isn’t a recession.

A 2015 law requires rental car companies with 35 or more vehicles to complete recall repairs before renting vehicles. The agency is requiring Zipcar, a unit of Avis Budget Group (CAR.O) since 2013, to submit an audit report of all Zipcar vehicles with uncompleted recall repairs at any time within 150 calendar days after the effective date of the settlement. On Monday, Zipcar said the settlement stems from a 2017 recall in which less than 50 of 12,000 vehicles of its global fleet were found in violation. Zipcar added the recall "was a unique mileage-based recall that did not require the immediate grounding of the vehicles" and added the vehicles are no longer in its fleet. "Vehicles with open, unrepaired recalls pose a safety risk to everyone on the road," said Ann Carlson, NHTSA's acting administrator.

NEW YORK (AP) — Zipcar has been slapped with a $300,000 fine after U.S. regulators found that the car-sharing company allowed customers to rent vehicles that had open recalls, violating federal motor safety law. The civil penalty is a part of a consent order that the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration announced Monday. It marks NHTSA's first enforcement action against a rental car company over recalls, the agency said. “Vehicles with open, unrepaired recalls pose a safety risk to everyone on the road," NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson said in a statement. Zipcar agreed to the consent order.

On day two, I parked the car in Waveny Park in New Canaan and when I returned, it was gone. The local police told me they had impounded the rental because Avis had reported it stolen to the New York Police Department. I asked Avis not to charge me for the rental, but they did, $653, and when I disputed the charge with Capital One, Avis fought me. I can’t believe Avis is renting out cars they have reported stolen, and then charging its clients. In it, Ms. Gibson said Avis apologized to you and has now refunded the rental cost, and implied that the company had not known the rental was reported stolen.

Letitia James, the state's attorney general, said the civil fine resolved charges that the operator of Avis Car Rental, Budget Rent a Car and Payless Car Rental violated a state law against requiring credit cards for vehicle rentals. A probe begun late last year following a customer complaint found that 74 out of 106 Avis and Budget locations across New York insisted on credit cards, while 32 accepted debit cards. Sometimes shopping used can require even more research and preparation than shopping for a new car. Used car prices have been notoriously volatile since the pandemic and squeezes on inventory have allowed sellers of used cars to jack up prices based on urgent needs. While this option can be great for new car shopping if you're on a budget, used car leases can be dangerous. Even when buying a used car, warranties are an important part of used car shopping. If repair costs are a concern for you, consider purchasing an extended warranty on your used car.
