CNN —Israeli military tanks were seen in central Rafah on Tuesday for the first time since the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) entered Gaza’s southernmost city earlier this month, two eyewitnesses told CNN. Alaa Abu Ibrahim, a Rafah resident, told CNN that Israeli tanks were seen at the Al Awda roundabout in the center of the city. Asked about reports of tanks advancing in the city, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said at a media briefing on Tuesday that the military is operating in Rafah in a “targeted” and “precise” way. Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state said Tuesday that she “unequivocally condemns Hamas’ use of rape and sexual violence as an act of war,” following comments she made to CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday that set off a firestorm among her Democratic colleagues in the House. “Let me be completely clear again that I unequivocally condemn Hamas’ use of rape and sexual violence as an act of war,” Jayapal said in her latest statement. Elon Musk began his visit to Israel on Monday by touring Kibbutz Kfar Aza with PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Kfar Aza was targeted by Hamas on October 7, with over 100 civilians killed there. Musk will also meet with Israel's president during his visit, to discuss antisemitism on X. It is too early to talk about a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. Peace efforts in the Middle East have been tried over and over again. Aaron David Miller is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the author of “The Much Too Promised Land: America’s Elusive Search for Arab-Israeli Peace.” Few people have been as intimately involved in the many Middle East peace processes as Miller. He’s a decades-long veteran of the State Department who has touched peace negotiations under the Reagan, the Clinton and both Bush administrations. His book is the best I’ve read on the peace processes and what went wrong.

We would spend the next six hours inside Gaza, much of that time spent getting back and forth from the tunnel shaft. Oren Liebermann/CNNIt was nearing midnight as we walked the last few feet to the exposed tunnel shaft. The discovery of the tunnel shaft the next day was more compelling, showing an entrance to something underground. Standing on the edge of the tunnel shaft, it was apparent that the structure itself was substantial. The IDF said the tunnel shaft extends downwards approximately 10 meters and the tunnel runs for 55 meters.
