Though the judge spoke favorably about Ellison, he said that he could not let her off scot-free. "Her physical appearance has been the subject of internet fascination and scrutiny," her lawyer, Anjan Sahni, told the judge at the Tuesday sentencing hearing. Advertisement"She had a crush on him from the beginning," Sahni told the judge in the sentencing hearing. Related stories"I found myself drifting away," Ellison told the judge in her own remarks Tuesday. "Numerous films and TV shows are in production about the downfall of FTX, which will only perpetuate the public scrutiny Ellison has faced to date," prosecutors wrote in a filing ahead of the sentencing hearing.

Caroline Ellison was the CEO of Alameda Research, a trading firm launched by Sam Bankman-Fried. She oversaw bets Alameda took with customer funds. She will be sentenced for her role in the fraud case on Tuesday. In August 2022, Ellison became the head of Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried's trading firm that was closely intertwined with his fallen crypto exchange, FTX. By November, as FTX swiftly spiraled into bankruptcy, Ellison began to draw attention for her role in overseeing the risky bets Alameda took with customers' funds.

Defense lawyers also had requested a no-prison sentence for Ellison, who had run Alameda Research , a hedge fund connected to FTX. Kaplan allowed Ellison to remain free on bail until she surrenders to prison either on or after Nov. 7. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March and also was ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture by Kaplan. On Tuesday, before sentencing Ellison, Kaplan contrasted her conduct after she was charged with that of Bankman-Fried. Both Bankman-Fried and Ellison had faced the same statutory maximum sentence of about 110 years in prison for their crimes.

New York CNN —A year ago, Caroline Ellison was preparing to testify against her former boss and ex-boyfriend in one of the biggest fraud trials in US history. Ellison, who ran Alameda, pleaded guilty to seven federal counts of fraud and conspiracy shortly after FTX’s collapse. A jury last year convicted former crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried on multiple counts of federal fraud and conspiracy. Over three days on the stand, Ellison, who is 29, repeatedly reinforced that throughout her years at Alameda, the buck stopped with Bankman-Fried. While sentencing is entirely up to Judge Kaplan’s discretion, legal experts say it’s highly unlikely Ellison will end up in prison.

“I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do – for personal safety,” Harris, then a California senator, told reporters in Iowa. Harris’ office declined to share what year she first became a gun owner or any other details about the firearm and her ownership of it. But she did not run from her values on assault rifles and assault weapons,” the adviser said. Trump, Harris’ Republican opponent, is also a self-proclaimed gun owner. SAN DIEGO — The Home Depot agreed to a nearly $2 million settlement in a case that alleged it overcharged customers, charging more for items at checkout than the items' advertised prices. In an emailed statement responding to a request for comment about the settlement, Home Depot said, “To ensure consistency for our customers, we’ve updated the timing of our price changes." The settlement includes $1.7 million to be divided among the district attorneys' offices of Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Alameda, San Bernardino and Sonoma counties for consumer law enforcement. New York CNN —Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Fried, the convicted former CEO of crypto exchange FTX, filed an appeal Friday, claiming he was denied a fair trial last fall and seeking new proceedings under a different judge. Bankman-Fried, 32, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after a jury convicted him on multiple federal counts of fraud and conspiracy in November. Two years after FTX collapsed in the midst of a cash crunch, Bankman-Fried is arguing that he didn’t get a fair shake in his trial. The court, they say, prohibited Bankman-Fried from introducing evidence of solvency for FTX and its sister firm, Alameda. Ellison pleaded guilty in cooperation with the government and became a star witness against Bankman-Fried during his trial.

US District Judge Lewis Kaplan scheduled the hearing after Ryan Salame, a former executive of Alameda Research and FTX Digital Markets, tried to withdraw his guilty plea. Salame said prosecutors broke a promise to him by later indicting his romantic partner, Michelle Bond — a claim that prosecutors vigorously disputed. Instead, Kaplan grilled Salame under oath for over 30 minutes in his Manhattan courtroom Thursday morning, accusing him of misrepresenting the plea negotiations. That left Kaplan in a bind: Either Salame lied in his plea hearing, throwing the plea into doubt. Bond would not be pursued if I plead guilty," Salame said.

Lawyers for Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, are recommending no prison time for their client’s role in the implosion of the crypto empire that was run by her former boss and ex-boyfriend. Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over Bankman-Fried’s case, cited Ellison’s testimony when he decided in March to sentence the FTX founder to 25 years behind bars. Ellison, who ran Alameda Research, agreed to a plea deal in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried forced Ellison into a sort-of isolation, culminating in her moral compass being “warped,” the lawyers say. Her former roommates and ex-FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, will be sentenced in October and November, respectively.

A little over three years ago, private equity investor Orlando Bravo called FTX the "most cutting-edge, sophisticated cryptocurrency exchange in the world," as his buyout firm helped lead a $900 million investment in the company at a valuation of $18 billion. Bravo now tells CNBC that he and his firm, Thoma Bravo, are permanently out of crypto after that disaster. FTX spiraled into bankruptcy in late 2022, and founder Sam Bankman-Fried is in the early days of serving a 25-year prison sentence for the massive fraud and conspiracy that doomed FTX and sister hedge fund Alameda Research. "Once you make a mistake and once you get burned on something, our philosophy and my philosophy is you never touch it again," Bravo said in an interview on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" on Thursday. FTX marked a sideways turn for San Francisco-based Thoma Bravo, which has emerged as a giant investor in technology, orchestrating multibillion-dollar acquisitions in recent years of companies including cybersecurity software vendor Proofpoint, property management software company RealPage, finance and supply chain software developer Anaplan and spend management software company Coupa.

According to an indictment unsealed Thursday, Bond had a fake consulting agreement with FTX, the notorious cryptocurrency exchange run by Sam Bankman-Fried. The $400,000 she received — along with gobs of more stolen money from FTX — fueled her congressional campaign, prosecutors say. The charges against Bond come one day after she finalized a divorce with her previous partner, according to Salame. In total, Salame and FTX gave Bond over $900,000, according to the indictment — far above the legal limits. Nicholas Biase, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, declined to comment on Salame's filing. The historic endorsement came after Biden announced Sunday that he is dropping out of the race following weeks of disarray within the Democratic Party. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. Despite the president’s backing, it remains unclear whether Harris will become the nominee, or what process the Democratic Party would take to select an alternative. Elected leaders in Alameda, Calif., voted early on Wednesday to stop scientists from testing a device that might one day be used to artificially cool the planet, overruling city staff members who had found the experiment posed no danger. The test involved spraying tiny sea-salt particles across the flight deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Versions of that device could eventually be used to spray the material skyward, making clouds brighter so that they reflect more sunlight away from Earth. Scientists say that could help to cool the planet and to fight the effects of global warming. That has pushed the idea of deliberately intervening in climate systems closer to reality.
