House Speaker Mike Johnson has known, as so many of us have, that the Mayorkas impeachment was doomed to fail from the start. But at its core, impeachment is a political process, not a legal one. Over the past year, Congress’ use of impeachment has gone from merely political to politically gratuitous. House Republicans opened an impeachment inquiry into President Biden himself last year over only the murkiest of corruption charges. The Mayorkas impeachment is, in essence, about policy disagreements that Republicans would like to air to the public in an election year.

CNN —The immigration and border crisis is quickly morphing into the dominant issue of American politics – and Democrats are pivoting faster than Republicans at the moment. It took two tries, but House Republicans made their point and voted by the narrowest possible margin to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary since the 1870s. He tacked to the middle specifically on the issue of immigration, hammering Republicans for refusing to work with Democrats on an immigration compromise. Except voters concerned about immigration told CNN reporters that it was also dysfunction on Capitol Hill – Republicans rejected even the idea of a bipartisan immigration deal last week – that drove their votes. Democrats and Republicans in the Senate joined together to pass a foreign aid package this week after it was decoupled from the border compromise.

Trump has pledged to appeal and has until Monday to ask the Supreme Court to temporarily block the ruling. Perhaps to speed things along, the appeals court established a quick schedule for Trump to respond to Tuesday’s ruling, giving Trump until February 12 to file an emergency stay request with the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, however, can take as long as it likes at each step. The cases are entirely separate – this is a criminal prosecution against Trump, and the upcoming Supreme Court case is a civil attempt to remove Trump from state ballots. Further, the appeals court’s findings and explanations in Tuesday’s ruling are not binding on the Supreme Court.

LONDON — Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on Friday was cleared of a public order offense over a protest at an oil and gas conference in October. Oil executives had been meeting inside the hotel on the first day of the Energy Intelligence Forum, formerly known as the Oil and Money conference. Thunberg appeared at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court this week alongside two Fossil Free London protesters and two Greenpeace protesters. All five defendants pleaded not guilty after being accused of breaching Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 by failing to move their protest to a designated area. The judge in the London court ruled she had no case to answer, and also acquitted the other defendants.

He was ultimately acquitted after a Senate trial. Enough time and money has been wasted forcing Texas Attorney Ken Paxton, to defend himself," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. Paxton did not testify at his impeachment trial. Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife are seeking separate trials on bribery charges they each face in a New York court. Lawyers for Bob Menendez wrote that each spouse should face separate trials so that the senator does not provide information about marital communications during cross-examination that might be damaging to his wife's defense. Several days earlier, the senator's lawyers had asked that charges in the case be dismissed. They added to those requests Monday, calling charges against him a “distortion of the truth.”“Senator Menendez isn’t just ‘not guilty’ — he is innocent of these charges. Senator Menendez has never sold out his office or misused his authority or influence for personal financial gain,” they wrote.

The study relied on AI's discovery of similarities between different fingers belonging to the same person to argue that each fingerprint is, in fact, not totally unique. Some of the pairs came from two different fingers belonging to the same person, while other pairs were two different people's fingers. The AI system discovered that fingerprints from different fingers belonging to the same person were incredibly similar. Researchers honed in on the angles and curvatures at the center of the fingerprint to find these similarities, Guo told CNN. "I think this study is just the first domino in a huge sequence of these things," Guo told CNN.

On the first day of the four-day cease-fire, Hamas released 24 of the about 240 hostages taken during its Oct. 7 attack on Israel that triggered the war, and Israel freed 39 Palestinians from prison. During the four days, Hamas is to release at least 50 Israeli hostages, and Israel 150 Palestinian prisoners. Israel has said the truce can be extended an extra day for every additional 10 hostages freed — something United States President Joe Biden said he hoped would come to pass. FIRST HOSTAGES FREEDAfter nightfall Friday, a line of ambulances emerged from Gaza through the Rafah Crossing into Egypt carrying the freed hostages. Netanyahu has also vowed to continue the war to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities, end its 16-year rule in Gaza and return all the hostages.

The freed Israeli hostages included eight women — six of them in their 70s and 80s — and three children. FIRST HOSTAGES FREEDAfter nightfall Friday, a line of ambulances emerged from Gaza through the Rafah Crossing in Egypt, carrying the freed hostages, according to live footage on Egypt’s state-run Al-Qahera TV. My boss simply never, ever, ever gives positive feedback. This seems to be fine for most of my colleagues, but I really thrive on positive feedback and always have. Most people benefit from positive feedback and other forms of affirmation, so you aren’t a drip for seeking that. If you need to frame it as positive feedback, you can certainly do so, but there’s no reason you cannot ask your boss for positive feedback in addition to the constructive feedback she provides. The reality is that you do not owe your employer anything but doing good work in exchange for fair compensation.

Defense lawyers estimated that they would question him for about five hours after brief testimony from two other witnesses. After prosecutors rested Thursday, defense lawyers immediately asked Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to acquit Bankman-Fried on the grounds that prosecutors had failed to present sufficient evidence. Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas and extradited to the United States last December, a month after his businesses collapsed. Kaplan revoked the bail in August after concluding that Bankman-Fried had tried to influence potential trial witnesses. Since then, his lawyers have complained that Bankman-Fried has been unable to properly prepare for trial while incarcerated at a Brooklyn federal lockup.

Orlov, 70, was defending himself in a case based on a November 2022 article in which he wrote that Russia under President Vladimir Putin had descended into fascism. "Where is it defined that our commander-in-chief (Putin) always rightly understands not only the interests of Russia, but the interests of its citizens?" Orlov asked in his closing speech at a trial which began in June. "And if the ideas of a part of Russia's citizens about their own interests don't match those of the commander-in-chief, don't they have the right to talk about this?"

REUTERS/Amr Alfiky/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Thursday restricted Sam Bankman-Fried's ability to call expert witnesses to testify at his criminal fraud trial, in a blow to the FTX cryptocurrency exchange founder. But in a written order, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said three proposed witnesses cannot take the stand, because their testimony was irrelevant or could confuse the jury. He also said Bankman-Fried may seek to call the remaining four experts, but only to rebut prosecution witnesses. Among the witnesses Kaplan rejected was Peter Vinella, a consultant who intended to testify about "FTX's use of widely-accepted practices in the financial services industry." It is common in U.S. criminal trials for prosecutors and defendants to call experts to help jurors understand complex issues.

The Texas Senate voted on Saturday to acquit the state’s attorney general, Ken Paxton, after a nine-day impeachment trial that focused on allegations of corruption and divided the Republican Party. Mr. Paxton, a three-term incumbent who had been suspended from the post since his impeachment in May, was immediately reinstated. The impeachment case has deepened the rift in the Republican Party in Texas, with those who lined up behind Mr. Paxton attacking Republicans in the Texas House who backed impeachment by a wide margin. The process was overseen by Republicans, with Republicans in both the defense and in the prosecution, but ultimately, most Republicans in the Senate supported Mr. Paxton. With a two-thirds vote required for conviction, no article received even a majority vote.

WHAT IS AN IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY? An impeachment inquiry is a formal step that can precede a House vote on whether to approve articles of impeachment and eventually a trial in the Senate. It did not hold a full impeachment inquiry before bringing impeachment charges in the final weeks of Trump's presidency following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Weiss has said prosecutors will seek to indict Hunter Biden on tax and gun charges by Sept. 29. Some legal experts say Trump’s Jan. 6 actions disqualify him for the presidency. Some legal experts say efforts to disqualify Trump could set a troubling precedent that would empower state election officials to unilaterally disqualify candidates based on their own interpretations of "insurrection or rebellion." Others say state election officials are bound to apply it when considering candidates for the ballot and can be compelled to do so by court order. Voters and groups representing them would need to persuade secretaries of state across the 50 states - many of them elected Republicans and Trump allies - to determine Trump is disqualified or to persuade judges to bar them from putting Trump on the ballot. It would require persuading or forcing election officials to keep Trump off the ballot in states governed by his Republican allies.

"The problem is the office is being used for the benefit of one person," said Jeff Mateer, who was Paxton's second-in-command at the Texas attorney generals' office. Their relationship is central to the case led by Republican impeachment managers that Paxton should be removed from office. Mateer took the stand with few onlookers in the Senate gallery for what is Texas' first impeachment trial in nearly a half century. Paxton attorney Tony Buzbee said Paxton "gave nothing of significance" to Paul and framed the proceedings as an attempt to overturn the will of voters. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is underway with live television coverage, a former aide who reported him to the FBI on the witness stand and his wife watching from her desk in the state Senate but prohibited from participating. But how much Paxton himself will take part in the historic trial that resumes Wednesday is up in the air. Paxton pleaded not guilty Tuesday but did not return for opening arguments, when his attorneys sharply criticized the impeachment and urged Republican senators to acquit. The vote immediately suspended Paxton and made him only the third sitting official in Texas’ nearly 200-year history to be impeached. What they are doing is taking away the vote of the majority of the people of Texas,” Bowen said.

“We want the entire MAGA movement to understand that what’s going on in Texas is not just about Texas,” Mr. Bannon told his podcast audience this month. Yet those conservative credentials may not be enough to help Mr. Paxton survive what promises to be the most significant test he has faced. A well-funded political action committee, Defend Texas Liberty, has begun targeting some Republican members of the Texas House who voted to impeach Mr. Paxton. Mr. Abbott has not commented on Mr. Paxton’s impeachment. Mr. Paxton won handily and went on to easily win a third term in the November election.

Trump's new object of hatred is the surface state — the state itself. The attack on the surface state began, of course, on January 6, when a violent mob, assembled and encouraged by Trump, descended on the Capitol to overturn a presidential election. AdvertisementAdvertisementToday, Trump's attacks on the surface state are accelerating. Maybe Trump has forgotten that less than three years ago, he was head of the surface state. Even defendants who, like Trump, attempt to sabotage the integrity of the justice system are entitled to the same due process and protections under US law.

There was never any way to remove Trump from American politics through the Democratic Party alone. Rather than remove Trump from American politics by convicting him in the Senate after his second impeachment, Republicans punted their responsibilities to the American legal system. (In his most recent newsletter, my colleague Ross Douthat makes a powerful case that only politics can solve the problem of Donald Trump.) First, there is the simple political fear of losing a House or Senate seat. In polarized, gerrymandered America, all too many Republican politicians face political risk only from their right, and that “right” appears to be overwhelmingly populated by Trumpists.
