A voter casts his ballot at a voting station in the fishing village of Ndayane on Nov. 17, 2024, during Senegal's parliamentary elections. Senegal headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in legislative elections that the president hopes will give his party a clear majority and the means to implement an ambitious agenda for reforms. The West African nation saw some of the worst political violence in recent history ahead of the presidential election in March. The new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has promised to help, but his government is grappling with slower-than-projected growth and a worsening budget deficit. The main threat to his party Pastef's ambitions is the unexpected alliance of two opposition parties, including the Republic party (APR) headed by the former Prime Minister Macky Sall.

“I was completely stunned when he mentioned violence so bluntly,” said the 32-year-old, who was born and raised in China. In Britain, “Cafe Scientifique,” a laid-back science debate forum, kicked off in 1998 and “Pint of Science,” a three-day science festival, launched in May 2013. Unlike Western universities, which generally welcome the public, most Chinese campuses remain fenced off, keeping their academic resources exclusive to students, faculty and authorized personnel. Nationalist voices online have also grown into a powerful unofficial force policing speech across Chinese social media. Liang, who deemed the state-building talk “bold,” said he loves these academic pub sessions but suspects they will eventually face restriction.

HONG KONG — They rode for soup dumplings — and a sense of youthful liberation in pressured times. But the band of university students who cycled through the night would ultimately be met by a red light from authorities, after their viral quest grew so popular that it snarled traffic in central China and overwhelmed the ancient capital, Kaifeng. By the weekend, tens of thousands of students had joined this self-proclaimed "night riding army," seeking not just breakfast, but also a way to travel and socialize without spending much money. They rented shared bikes and cycled in groups through the night from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng. Waves of riders propelled by the slogan "youth is priceless" joined this 40-mile journey along a major road beside the Yellow River.

CNN —Although sales of tobacco products have been restricted in hundreds of municipalities across the US, a new study is highlighting some loopholes that allow children to bypass online regulations to buy e-cigarettes. Though the sales of flavored tobacco products have been restricted in eight states and in nearly 400 cities or counties, these regulations don’t completely cover e-commerce or online shopping. “People will not tell the truth when they enter their age, and it’s remarkably easy for kids to get tobacco products mailed to them. More than 1 in 4 underage people report using e-cigarettes daily, and most youth who use e-cigarettes favor flavored products. “Prohibiting tobacco sales completely, or states putting some more restrictions on how the products are delivered to people, can help make e-cigarettes harder to purchase,” he said.

Over the weekend, authorities in Kaifeng and Zhengzhou closed off bike lanes on Zhengkai Avenue, to try to stop cyclists from entering. To prevent students from joining the cycling crowd, some colleges and universities in Zhengzhou even imposed restrictions on leaving campus, according to accounts shared by students on social media. In the spring of 1989, university students in Beijing rode their bikes to Tiananmen Square to join pro-democracy protests that ended in a bloody crackdown by the Chinese military. Their journey quickly went viral, inspiring more Zhengzhou students to follow suit as the hashtag “youth is priceless” trended on social media. Others said local authorities should have been better prepared for the influx of students before they jumped in to promote the trend.

Chinese authorities last month announced high-level plans for subsidies and tax breaks to households with children under the age of 3. China's efforts to bolster birth rates have yet to address the core reasons for their rapid decline, according to analysts. Births in China have been on a drastic downward trend since the government implemented its "one-child policy" nationwide in 1980. An increasingly pressing factor for families in China is uncertainty about income for raising a child. After decades of rapid expansion, China's economy has slowed down, dragged down by a real estate slump.

Was music really better when you were younger?

As I see other generations of music lovers say music was so much better when they were younger, I wondered why. “It’s not that music was better when (we) were younger; it’s that music elicits very, very strong emotions,” said Dr. Rita Aiello, a music psychologist at New York University who examines how people process music and how music and memories shape each other. “Music is episodic,” said Dr. Robert Cutietta, a professor of music at the University of Southern California. A 2022 replication of the latter study in Marketing Letters: A Journal of Research in Marketing found that a person’s music preference peaks as young as 17. A growing group of Chinese travelers are now turning to extreme forms of transportation for their vacations.
