I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

The Marines were trying to manage the chaos of the poorly planned evacuation of Afghans from Kabul — a humanitarian mission at heart, trying to help those we were abandoning. “Mar-Jac and its affiliates have a long and sordid history of willful disregard for worker safety,” the lawsuit reads. In July, Duvan became the third worker to die in less than three years at the Hattiesburg, Mississippi, plant owned by Mar-Jac, a Georgia-based poultry production company. After Duvan's death, Onin filed a notice with the state to avoid paying worker's compensation,the lawsuit claims. OSHA had issued at least eight citations for safety violations at the plant before Duvan's death, the lawsuit says. After the accident, Labor Department officials said Duvan’s death offered a reminder that children remain vulnerable to exploitation in the U.S. workplace.

I had Black friends, White friends, Asian friends, Hispanic friends and mixed-race friends. But I didn’t think of them as “Black,” “White,” “Hispanic” and “mixed race.” I thought of them as Rodney, Stephen, Javier and Jordan. Where my White friends had the wind of White supremacy at their backs, I faced a headwind. I huddled with the Black kids in one corner of the room, and watched as the White kids, Hispanic kids and Asian kids awkwardly shuffled to their respective corners. Why were Black students in one of the most progressive, non-racist environments on Earth claiming to experience racism all the time?

The children do not cry, nor make a sound as Hamas militants surround their shaken mother, a blanket wrapped around her body. It’s so scary.”Hamas is believed to have held more than 200 hostages in Gaza prior to the releases negotiated with Israel. On Monday, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said that the Bibas family is not currently held hostage by Hamas, which further complicates release efforts. An estimated eight children are still being held by Hamas, and their faces have galvanized a mourning nation clamoring for their return.
