Was music really better when you were younger?
  + stars: | 2024-11-09 | by ( Jemal Polson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
As I see other generations of music lovers say music was so much better when they were younger, I wondered why. “It’s not that music was better when (we) were younger; it’s that music elicits very, very strong emotions,” said Dr. Rita Aiello, a music psychologist at New York University who examines how people process music and how music and memories shape each other. “Music is episodic,” said Dr. Robert Cutietta, a professor of music at the University of Southern California. A 2022 replication of the latter study in Marketing Letters: A Journal of Research in Marketing found that a person’s music preference peaks as young as 17. It may be because you’re remembering the artists, songs and albums that were meaningful to you and forgetting the ones that weren’t.

Police are still searching for 43 monkeys that escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday, as the head of the company revealed that the outbreak happened when a staff member failed to secure a door properly. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, confirmed Thursday night that the primates were in the wooded region surrounding the Alpha Genesis facility, in a rural area on the edge of Yamassee. Locals were urged to lock windows and doors and not to interact with the monkeys and instead call 911 immediately upon spotting any of the escaped primates. Alpha Genesis carries out medical research for a range of clients for several conditions, including brain disorders. Meanwhile, animal rights advocates have raised concerns over the ethics of using primates in medical research on such a scale.

CNN —Investigators in Wisconsin used genetic genealogy to solve a 50-year-old cold case this week, charging an 84-year-old Minnesota man with killing a woman who was found dead in 1974, authorities said. “This is a huge victory for our agency,” Bygd said at a Friday news conference. It’s the first time the agency has used genetic genealogy to solve a case, the sheriff said. Forensic genetic genealogy can generate leads for unsolved cases by analyzing DNA on top of traditional genealogy research, according to the US Department of Justice. One US company, just two days after Trump’s reelection, says it isn’t wasting time getting out of China. Steve Madden, a $3 billion shoe company, announced Thursday that it would rapidly halve its Chinese production to avoid Trump’s tariffs. But here’s the catch: Steve Madden isn’t moving its production to the United States. ‘There for a reason’The retail industry has been crying foul over Trump’s tariffs for quite some time – apparel and shoe companies in particular. Trump’s tariffs could cost the typical middle-income US household more than $2,600 per year, according to research from Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Bitcoin is just getting started after its postelection rally, according to Fundstrat's Tom Lee, and is still on track to hit six figures by the end of the year. "I think because [it's] post-halving and now bitcoin is becoming a lot more relevant ... the regulatory overhang is diminishing — that there's a lot of upside from here." The flagship cryptocurrency climbed to fresh records this week after President-elect Donald Trump' s victory, which was widely anticipated as a bullish catalyst for the crypto industry at large. During Trump's campaign for reelection he promised the crypto industry a more favorable regulatory environment that would include appointing a more crypto-friendly leader to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission. Fed Chair Jay Powell said Thursday that he would not resign if president-elect Donald Trump asked him to. Asked whether he would step down amid chatter that Trump's advisors had suggested he do so, Powell replied, "No." Trump himself nominated Powell as Federal Reserve chairman in 2017 in his first administration. Powell made the comments during his regularly scheduled remarks following the release of the Federal Open Market Committee's latest statement on interest rate policy. Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Over the past few years, he said, it's looked for factories in other countries, including Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil. Rosenfeld said about two-thirds of Steve Madden's business are U.S. imports. Of that, he said, "we currently source a little bit more than 70% of those goods from China." That means slightly less than half of its business would be at risk of tariffs on Chinese imports, he said. He said the company has moved more of its production outside of China since tariffs began under Trump's first administration.

CNN —Donald Trump believes presidents have almost absolute power. In his second term, there will be few political or legal restraints to check him. It’s not guaranteed that just because Trump has massive power he will spurn constitutional checks and balances. No other president has come into office armed with a Supreme Court ruling that grants significant immunity to presidents for official acts. Attempts to prosecute Trump’s political foes on spurious grounds, meanwhile, could theoretically see mass resignations of Justice Department staff.
