Hui Ka Yan, the chairman of China Evergrande Group — the company at the center of the country's property sector crisis — has been moved to a special detention center in Shenzhen, two sources with knowledge of the matter said. After China's securities regulator found Evergrande's flagship unit had inflated earnings and committed securities fraud, Hui was fined $6.6 million in March and barred from the securities market for life. Chinese authorities have detained many former high-flying business executives and some have remained in detention for years with little or no information about their fate. He was transferred to Shenzhen a few months ago to allow him to more easily communicate with top Evergrande executives, said the second source. Evergrande is headquartered in the neighboring southern city of Guangzhou and its wealth management unit is based in Shenzhen.

SINGAPORE — Pope Francis on Thursday urged political leaders in Singapore, a leading global financial hub, to seek fair wages for the country’s million-plus lower-paid foreign workers. “These workers contribute a great deal to society and should be guaranteed a fair wage,” he said. Many of the migrant workers come from nearby countries such as Malaysia, China, Bangladesh and India. A Singapore NGO that provides services for migrant workers, Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics, welcomed the pope’s remarks, saying they were in “full agreement” with his call for fair wages. CNN —A 5-year-old boy died and another child was injured when a bounce house they were inside went airborne during a baseball game in Maryland on Friday night, authorities said. The bounce house flew onto the playing field at Regency Furniture Stadium, in Waldorf, as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team was playing, according to a news release from Charles County officials. The children who were inside fell before the bounce house landed on the field, according to the news release. Onsite medical responders immediately tended to the children, with help from trainers from the baseball team and attendees of the game, authorities said. The billionaire founder of South Korean technology giant Kakao, Kim Beom-Su, was arrested on Tuesday on allegations of stock manipulation related to the company’s investment in one of the country’s largest K-pop agencies. Multiple wildfires in Southern California have burned a combined 20,000 acres, forced more than 1,000 evacuations over the weekend and, according to the California Highway Patrol, briefly shut down Interstate 5 on Sunday night. The Lost Hills fire, in Kern County, had burned about 500 acres by Sunday night and was zero percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. A scientist whose research has been at the center of controversy over an Alzheimer’s drug candidate has been charged with fraud. Dr. Wang’s studies underpinned research into a diagnostic test for Alzheimer’s disease and simufilam, a drug in advanced clinical trials. Simufilam’s manufacturer, Cassava Sciences, a pharmaceutical company based in Texas, has said the drug improves cognition in Alzheimer’s patients. Alzheimer’s disease affects roughly six million Americans — a number that is expected to double by 2050 — and promising treatments generate tremendous excitement. Cassava’s stock soared after each round of reported results from its trials.

Mr. Bhuiya died at a hospital in Dhaka, the capital, the national police said on Tuesday, adding that the cause was unconfirmed. Abul Kashem, his landlord, said in an interview that he had driven Mr. Bhuiya to the hospital on Sunday after he complained of chest pains. Last year, Mr. Bhuiya told the local news media that he was 74. But according to Mr. Bhuiya’s national identity card, provided by Mr. Kashem, he was 66 at the time of his death. More than a million people in the Upper Midwest were under flood warnings early Sunday morning, after days of heavy rain caused major flooding, forced evacuations and led to rescues in Iowa and South Dakota. The flood warnings were in place for rivers in parts of Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Some of the warnings were scheduled to end later on Sunday; others were in effect until further notice. In Iowa, several rivers have been peaking above levels reported during a 1993 flood that left 50 dead across the Midwest, according to that state’s governor, Kim Reynolds. In South Dakota, torrential rain has fallen across the central and eastern parts of the state for three days, and some areas have received up to 18 inches.
