GOP senators and top aides say the race could go either way. Scott, who is a McConnell critic, has been more willing to fall in line with Trump than Cornyn or Thune over the last several years. Both Thune and Cornyn are closely politically aligned with the longtime GOP leader. Asked if he would like to get more public endorsements from GOP senators, Thune said he is not asking anyone to do that. They also point out his remarkable ascent – he defeated then-Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004 and is now on a path to possibly becoming GOP leader.

The Summary FEMA and NOAA have become politicized as the frequency and severity of natural disasters have increased. With the neck-and-neck 2024 election just days away, the futures of the federal agencies responsible for weather forecasting, climate change research and disaster recovery hang in the balance. And with it, they’ve become a target for some conservatives who are skeptical of climate change and want to slash government budgets. “Climate change is a very unique problem in that, like most environmental problems, it doesn’t respect our political boundaries and it doesn’t respect our state boundaries,” he said. “We need centralized federal agencies to respond to climate change, agencies that can handle big, significant, multistate disasters at the appropriate scale.”

Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump attends his campaign rally at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan, U.S., November 1, 2024. Throughout the week, Trump's campaign aired thousands of ads focused on his policy platform: universal tariffs, deeper tax cuts and sweeping immigrant deportations. "This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign," Trump campaign senior advisor Danielle Alvarez said last Sunday night. The Harris campaign has spun Trump's comment into a contrast to back its bipartisan case for the Democratic presidential nominee. Dan Griffith of Huntington Bank expects ING trusts will surge in popularity with dealmaking on the rebound coinciding with a "silver tsunami." However, Wyoming and South Dakota are also options as they do not tax trust income or capital gains and protect trust assets from creditors. "This can apply even if they don't live in a state with a state income tax." Since beneficiaries do have to pay state income taxes — if applicable — when they receive distributions. ING trusts cannot be used to defer income taxes on salaries or income from tangible assets in the state.

CNN —Donald Trump said former Rep. Liz Cheney is a “war hawk” who should be sent into the line of fire, as he raged against one of his most prominent intra-party critics while campaigning Thursday night in Arizona. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK?” Trump said. She played a leading role on the House select committee that investigated the attack, and later was ousted from her deep-red Wyoming House seat by a Trump-backed primary opponent in 2022. In recent weeks, Cheney has campaigned alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, urging Republicans to set aside party differences to back the Democrat and reject a candidate she says poses a threat to democracy. “I don’t blame him for sticking with his daughter, but his daughter’s a very dumb individual — very dumb,” Trump said.

The number of E. coli cases linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 90, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday, up from 75 reported cases last Friday. The slivered onions used on the burgers are the “likely source” of the outbreak, the CDC said. The true number of cases linked to the Quarter Pounders is likely much higher than the 90 reported so far. Thirteen states have reported cases: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. According to McDonald’s, 900 restaurants across 12 states received the onions from Taylor Farms.

Kamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican Trump critics hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. “It’s repulsive,” said Dale J., a 67-year-old from Minnesota who voted for Trump in 2020 and plans to do so again. "I really liked the idea that Nikki Haley was a woman, and I thought she would have more closer values to mine than Trump. (One of these voters is a registered Democrat who voted in her state’s open presidential primary for Haley.) Golden eagle feet recovered by law enforcement officers from a Washington state man's vehicle. He said illegal shootings were “absolutely wrong” but sympathized with tribal members who don’t want to wait years for eagle parts. Around his waist was a decorative piece strung with eagle feathers, and he carried a short wooden stick carved into a bald eagle head, a single feather hanging from it. Online posts from people selling eagle feathers illegally are relatively easy to find on internet marketplaces. Most dead eagles, parts and feathers received by tribal members come from the wildlife service’s National Eagle Repository.

Ninety people in 13 states have been infected in a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounders, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday, as it continues to investigate the source of the spread. Before Wednesday, the CDC last gave an update on the outbreak on Friday, when the agency said it had 75 cases in 13 states. Fresh slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders and other menu items at McDonald's are "the likely source of this outbreak," the CDC said on its website on Wednesday. The CDC believes the risk to the public is "very low" due to the efforts from McDonald's and Taylor Farms. Quarter Pounder hamburgers are a core menu item for McDonald's, raking in billions of dollars each year.

For Democrats, President Joe Biden dominated the primaries and faced only token opposition. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks as former President Donald Trump listens during a presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on September 10, 2024. Trump was accused by the Justice Department of election interference after he tried to overturn the 2020 election results. The most populous states are California (54 electoral votes), Texas (40 electoral votes) and Florida (30 electoral votes). The total number of electoral votes, 538, is an even number, which means a tie is conceivable.

No E. coli was detected in samples of beef patties used in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that have been linked to a deadly outbreak, a company spokesperson said Sunday, citing tests by the Colorado Agriculture Department. The department has no further plans to test the beef patties, the company spokesperson said, and the patties have been ruled out as the source of the outbreak. The most likely source of contamination was slivered onions from a single source, the company spokesperson said, citing the Food and Drug Administration. McDonald’s stopped sourcing slivered onions from that source — Taylor Farms Colorado Springs — indefinitely on Sunday, the company spokesperson said, days after it removed the Taylor Farms onions from its supply chain. The McDonald's spokesperson said the company is confident asking beef suppliers to provide a fresh supply of patties for distribution.

CNN —McDonald’s will resume selling Quarter Pounders in all restaurants in the coming week after considering new data regarding an E. coli outbreak linked to its famed burgers, the company announced Sunday. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a food safety alert Tuesday warning dozens of people reported eating the Quarter Pounder sandwich at McDonald’s before becoming sick. On Sunday, the Colorado Department of Agriculture said McDonald’s beef patties used for the Quarter Pounder tested negative for E. coli. The 900 restaurants that received slivered onions from McDonald’s supplier Taylor Farms’ Colorado Springs facility will resume sales of Quarter Pounders without slivered onions, the release added. CNN has reached out to the FDA to see if it has ruled out beef patties as the source of the E. coli outbreak.
