North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged the country’s military to improve capabilities for fighting a war in a speech last week, state media KCNA said on Monday, after Pyongyang dispatched thousands of troops to Russia. The report came amid international criticism over rapidly developing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. Washington, Seoul and Kyiv have said there are more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia to support its war against Ukraine, and some of them have engaged in combat in Kursk, near the Ukraine border. Biden’s administration has allowed Ukraine to use U.S.-made weapons to strike deep into Russia, sources told NBC News, marking a significant policy reversal and a response to Russia’s deployment of North Korean ground troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that North Korean troops had suffered casualties in combat with his country’s forces, and the first battles between them "open a new page in instability.”

During a landmark visit to the Amazon rainforest on Sunday, President Joe Biden highlighted his climate legacy, declaring that no one can reverse America’s green transition as President-elect Donald Trump’s fossil-friendly policies loom large. Biden is the first sitting U.S. president to visit the world’s largest tropical rainforest, which plays a vital role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere but is under growing threat from climate change. Speaking afterward at the Museum of the Amazon in Manaus, Brazil, Biden said the fight against climate change had been a “defining cause” of his presidency. Biden began his term by bringing the U.S. back into the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change that his predecessor, Trump, had withdrawn from. Trump, a climate change skeptic, has said he will withdraw from the agreement again as well as loosen restrictions on oil and gas exploration.

China is installing wind and solar power projects faster than any other country on the planet. It’s not that China is using less energy — it’s using more than ever — but it’s just adding wind and solar power to its grid at an astonishing pace. The country is constructing two-thirds — nearly 339 gigawatts — of the world’s utility-scale solar and wind projects. That is in addition to the 758 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity it has already built, according to the Global Energy Monitor. Wind and solar are now capable of generating 37% of the country’s power, according to Global Energy Monitor, already displacing coal’s dominance.

Weight-loss drug Wegovy launched in China

Novo Nordisk said Monday it has launched its popular obesity drug Wegovy in China, the world’s second-largest pharmaceuticals market where it estimates more than 180 million people live with obesity. The move intensifies the competition with Eli Lilly, which secured approval for its weight-loss drug in China in July but has yet to launch it. Both companies are ramping up production to capitalize on a weight-loss market projected by analysts to exceed $150 billion by the beginning of the next decade. Novo gained approval for Wegovy in China in June and will initially target Chinese patients willing to pay out-of-pocket for the weekly injectable drug. Novo (NVO) launched Wegovy in the US in 2021.

BYBLOS, Lebanon — The anguish in Lebanese archaeologist Nader Siklaoui’s voice is clear as he films Israeli missiles slamming down near ancient Roman columns he has spent much of his life protecting. But the conflict is also taking a devastating toll on Lebanon’s unique and ancient heritage, with airstrikes wiping out centuries-old villages and endangering fragile, millenia-old archaeological sites, like the celebrated Roman ruins of Baalbek, a United Nations world heritage site. First responders evacuate an injured person following an Israeli airstrike near Tyre, Lebanon, on Oct. 30. What can we do?” said Siklaoui, who oversees heritage sites in southern Lebanon, speaking to NBC News at the national museum in the capital Beirut. Israel’s military says it only targets Hezbollah, but accuses the group of embedding itself in and near civilian infrastructure, including heritage sites.

Even as they agree that it’s important to address growing rates of diabetes and obesity, doctors in that field say Kennedy’s plans miss the mark. But after McMaster was pushed out of office in 2018, the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban the withdrawal agreement of all US forces from Afghanistan. I’m tripping over their bodies,” said Sydney Seiler, the U.S. national intelligence officer for North Korea from 2020 to 2023. “Kim Jong Un is selling North Korean soldiers as cannon fodder mercenaries,” South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun said last month. It’s an entirely new environment for the North Korean soldiers, who live in one of the most isolated and repressive countries in the world. The Russian military is teaching the North Korean soldiers about 100 key military terms, but “North Koreans are having a difficult time learning Russian,” South Korean lawmakers Lee Sung-kwon and Park Sun-won said last month. Iran ‘categorically denies’ UN envoy met Elon Musk

The New York Times reported the meeting took place earlier this week, citing two Iranian officials. But Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei “categorically denied” that a meeting took place and was “surprised” by the coverage in US media, state-run IRNA said. CNN has reached out to Musk, Trump’s transition team and the Iranian mission at the UN for confirmation of the meeting. Just last week, the day after the presidential election, Musk joined Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to two sources. Trump announced Tuesday that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” in his second administration.

This week, researchers shared fascinating new findings on Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, and the far side of the moon. Other worldsIllustrations depict how Uranus' magnetosphere, or protective bubble, was behaving before Voyager 2's arrival (left) and during the spacecraft's flyby (right). An unusual cosmic occurrence during the Voyager 2 spacecraft’s 1986 flyby might have skewed how scientists characterized the ice giant, new research suggests. In particular, the spacecraft’s observations of Uranus’ protective magnetosphere were wildly different from astronomers’ expectations. Fortunately, sending a dedicated mission to study Uranus in the future is a priority for NASA, according to a 2022 report.

In the end, looking backward may be more productive for Biden and Xi than trying to predict what’s next for their two nations. Biden administration officials acknowledge they have little insight into what a notoriously unpredictable leader might be planning. What Biden can do, they argue, is reiterate to Xi the value of maintaining communication, even amid the expected contention. A key counterweight could be Biden’s legacyHow Trump confronts those threats is not something he’s discussed at great length, at least as a candidate. For others, it is the loss of lean muscle mass that accompanies their weight loss and puts them at greater risk for falls. There is little doubt that for most people, regular exercise and eating right is still the best strategy for weight loss and overall health.
