BENGALURU, July 20 (Reuters) - Infosys (INFY.NS), India's second-largest IT services firm by revenue, halved its full-year revenue forecast on Thursday and posted a first-quarter profit that missed estimates as clients cut back spending in a cloudy economic environment. Infosys' U.S.-listed shares fell nearly 7% in pre-market trading after the company cut its full-year revenue growth of 1%-3.5% on a constant currency basis from 4%-7% previously. There are some discretionary spending cuts from clients in the short-term and overall decision-making has slowed down, CEO Salil Parekh said in a media conference. Consolidated net profit rose 10.9% to 59.45 billion rupees ($725.5 million) in the three months to June 30, missing analysts' view of 61.41 billion rupees as per Refinitiv IBES. Businesses are cutting back spending on discretionary IT projects amid steep inflation that stoked interest rates.

BENGALURU, July 18 (Reuters) - India's second-largest software services exporter Infosys (INFY.NS) said on Monday it has signed a deal with an existing client to provide artificial intelligence (AI) and automation services that will span over five years, with a target spend estimated at $2 billion. AI and automation-related development, modernization and maintenance services are included in the agreement, the company said in an exchange filing. Infosys' move comes after rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.NS) said it planned to train 25,000 engineers to get them certified on Microsoft's (MSFT.O) Azure Open AI. Other rival Wipro (WIPR.NS) has plans to invest $1 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) over the next three years. Bengaluru-based Infosys launched a platform called Infosys Topaz for generative artificial intelligence (AI) in late May.

BENGALURU, July 12 (Reuters) - Indian IT services provider Wipro Ltd (WIPR.NS) said on Wednesday it planned to invest $1 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) over the next three years. The investments will focus on the expansion of AI, big data, and analytics solutions, as well as developing new research and development and platforms, it said in an exchange filing. This comes almost a week after rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.NS) said it planned to train 25,000 engineers to get them certified on Microsoft's (MSFT.O) Azure Open AI. Companies across the world, from banks to big tech, have doubled down on investments in AI after ChatGPT, a generative AI chatbot by Microsoft-backed OpenAI took the world by storm in late 2022. "Especially with the emergence of generative AI, we expect a fundamental shift up ahead, for all industries," Wipro CEO Thierry Delaporte said.

There are pockets of optimism elsewhere in the services sector - especially in accounting, where there is a surge in hiring. NLB sees a 20-25% drop in IT employee additions in the first half of the current financial year, while TeamLease Digital expects a 40% decrease for the entire year. Nasscom declined comment on the hiring slowdown. That has "surely left applicants concerned about future prospects", said staffing firm Xpheno's co-founder Kamal Karanth, who highlighted how current hiring activity was "under a third of what was recorded in the buoyant peak". Pai highlighted sectors such as financial services, consumer goods, specialised manufacturing, medicine, law, chartered accounting and other services as more viable options.

Vice filed for bankruptcy, wiping out equity holders who poured in hundreds of millions, including TPG and James Murdoch. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday in New York's Southern District Court. The company's filing listed assets and liabilities in the range of $500 million to $1 billion. Vice had run multiple sales processes with a range of different banks but never received an offer palatable to its owners. The bankruptcy filing reveals just how many companies and investors pinned their hopes on Smith's hype about the potential growth trajectory of the TV and online venture.

BENGALURU, April 24 (Reuters) - Indian shares were set to open higher on Monday as improved quarterly results from heavyweights Reliance Industries Ltd (RELI.NS) and ICICI Bank Ltd(ICBK.NS) eased some concerns over a lacklustre start to the earnings season. India's most valuable company, Reliance Industries reported 19% growth in fourth-quarter profit, aided by the strong performance in oil-to-chemicals (O2C) segment, post market hours on Friday. Private lender ICICI Bank posted a 30% jump in net profit in the March quarter, helped by improved net interest income and loan growth. The strong earnings of the two companies, which account for nearly 20% of the total weightage in Nifty 50, could improve the sentiment soured by the weak earnings and outlook of top information technology companies, analysts added. Feb 17 (Reuters) - KKR-backed technology firm BMC Software has confidentially filed for an initial public offering in the United States, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, offering an early sign of a thawing market after a virtual shutdown for most of last year. As BMC sets out to test the IPO waters, a listing could see the company valued at between $14 billion and $15 billion, depending on the scale of market recovery, the source added. In 2018, private equity giant KKR & Co (KKR.N) had acquired BMC for $8.5 billion, including debt. The U.S. IPO market has recently begun to show some signs of recovery as investor fears around a looming recession and further monetary policy tightening from the Federal Reserve ease. The news of BMC filing for an IPO confidentially was first reported by Bloomberg News.
ChatGPT, other AI models to disrupt Indian IT firms - JPM
  + stars: | 2023-02-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Feb 10 (Reuters) - Generative AI models such as ChatGPT will slow down market share gains and deflate pricing for Indian IT companies in the short term, analysts at J.P.Morgan said on Friday. As generative AI is implemented more broadly, consulting firms like Accenture and Deloitte and will gain market share over Indian IT firms like Infosys Ltd (INFY.NS) and Wipro Ltd (WIPR.NS) in the near term, analysts at the brokerage said in a note to clients. Generative AI can be a "deflation driver" in the near term on legacy services as they compete on pricing, necessitate staff retraining and drive loss of competitiveness, they added. Since then, other large tech companies like Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) and China's Baidu Inc (9888.HK) have rushed to announce their own in-house developments of generative AI. JPM said that among Indian IT companies, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS.NS) might retrain staff faster than smaller peers due to their better graduate hiring and training infrastructure.

"I think that in some ways quiet quitting is the natural sequel to the Great Resignation," professor Adam Grant said. But so has been the Great Resignation, which has seen a massive number of workers actually leaving their jobs. James Detert, a professor of business administration at the University of Virginia, detailed in a post on The Conversation how the Great Resignation, quiet quitting, and unionization efforts at big companies are actually similar. As noted during the panel and seen in previous coverage from Insider, "quiet quitting" isn't actually a new thing. The Great Resignation, and thus its "sequel" of quiet quitting, may continue in 2023 and be sticking around.
The idea of "quiet quitting" may not be anything new. Thierry Delaporte, CEO and managing director at IT company Wipro Limited, also sees quiet quitting as a chance for leaders to reflect on how they need to adjust to the changing labor force. The term quiet quitting was coined in 2022 on social media — with different definitions. People who were unable to resign or were unsuccessful in changing their work environment started asking questions, he said. Long term, it's not just about quiet quitting either, the Davos panel suggested.
