America's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is officially open, a long-awaited moment that helps pave the way for a succession of large wind farms. The Biden administration has approved six commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects, and auctioned lease areas for offshore wind for the first time off the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper called the opening a major milestone that proves large offshore wind farms can be built, both in the United States and in other countries with little or no offshore wind energy currently. Utah's governor signed a bill into law Tuesday that makes the state the latest to prohibit diversity training, hiring and inclusion programs at universities and in state government. The measure signed by Spencer Cox, a Republican who previously said he supported the idea, had cleared the state House and Senate by wide, party-line majorities. The measures have a heavy focus on higher education, but Republicans are also sponsoring ones that would limit DEI in K-12 schools, state government, state contracting and pension investments. They include measures to reverse Florida’s recent ban on DEI in higher education and measures to require considerations in the K-12 school curriculum. Republican-led Florida and Texas were first to enact broad-based laws banning DEI efforts in higher education last year.

However, Bank of America analysts expect Orsted's fortunes to improve in 2024 and have raised their price target from $15.06 per share to $22.80, representing nearly 20% upside from current levels. The upgrade and price target boost come after the stock has already staged a more-than-50% recovery from its November lows. Its remaining U.S. exposure consists primarily of the Sunrise Wind project off Long Island, which still needs state contract approval, according to the bank. CNN —Accounting for up to 1.5% of global electricity use, data centers are fueling the climate crisis. WindCORES, a subsidiary of German renewable electricity company WestfalenWIND, operates data centers inside wind turbines located in a wind park in the Paderborn district in western Germany, which the company says makes the centers almost carbon neutral. The concept uses existing wind turbines to power data centers on site, while fiber optic cables provide a constant internet connection. WindCORES estimates that the unused electricity generated during this period could power one-third of all German data centers. The solar and wind energy project will be so big that it will be visible from space, according to developers of what is called the Khavda renewable energy park, named after the village nearest to the project site. Two and a half years ago, when I was asked to help write the most authoritative report on climate change in the United States, I hesitated. Did we really need another warning of the dire consequences of climate change in this country? The answer, legally, was yes: Congress mandates that the National Climate Assessment be updated every four years or so. But to me, the most surprising new finding in the Fifth National Climate Assessment is this: There has been genuine progress, too. I’m used to mind-boggling numbers, and there are many of them in this report.

Nearly a third of that renewable energy should come from wind and solar power, said the report by researchers of Berlin-based Agora Energiewende. In 2021, they had installed a total of just 11.9 gigawatts of solar energy and 1.5 gigawatts of wind energy.
