In August, Rep. Jim Jordan helped launch a congressional inquiry into District Attorney Fani Willis. She responded on Thursday in a letter, claiming Jordan lacked "a basic understanding of the law." Willis suggested Jordan purchase a $249 law textbook to learn more about how RICO cases work. Believing that Jordan's RICO charge-related questions were "misinformed," Willis also suggested Jordan purchase and read a $249 law book, "RICO State-by-State." A representative for Rep. Jordan's office did not respond to Insider's request for comment.

Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to criminal charges related to his involvement in a sweeping scheme to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia and waived his right to appear at an arraignment scheduled for next week. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied wrongdoing in all the cases against him. He continues to repeat unfounded claims that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged and stolen” and that the indictments that followed amount to a witch hunt and election interference. In reality, Trump lost the general election to Biden, and, in Georgia specifically, he lost by some 11,779 votes. Trump faces 13 criminal charges in Georgia, the most serious of which is violating the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The indictment of Former President Donald Trump for interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia will be the biggest case of prosecutor Fani Willis' career, but it will not be her first contentious prosecution. “She’s not afraid of big cases,” said Gerald Griggs, a criminal defense attorney and president of the Georgia state conference of the NAACP. Willis worked from 2001 to 2018 in the Fulton County prosecutor's office, then won election as county prosecutor in 2020, defeating her former boss, Paul Howard. Willis campaigned on building leniency programs for some low-level offenders, but also adopted a hard line on violent crime and gang activity. “Anybody that thinks they can unleash insults from a podium and that’s going to shake Fani Willis is sorely mistaken."

Donald Trump is airing a television ad in Atlanta, and other TV markets, that attacks the Fulton County district attorney who could soon charge the former president with his fourth criminal indictment. A Trump campaign aide told NBC News the one-minute political ad will air in Atlanta, New York and Washington, D.C., as well as nationally. It also names attorneys who’ve already brought charges against Trump, including Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and special counsel Jack Smith. Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Trump, and that special counsel, Jack Smith, is the one who is prosecuting Trump. An NBC News Political Unit analysis of Trump fundraising around his first two indictments found those time periods corresponded with a significant uptick in fundraising by Trump's political organization.

The investigation has examined whether the former president and his allies illegally interfered in the 2020 election in Georgia, where Mr. Trump lost narrowly to President Biden. The special grand jury heard evidence for roughly seven months and recommended indictments of more than a dozen people; its forewoman strongly hinted in an interview with The New York Times in February that Mr. Trump was among them. To bring any charges, Ms. Willis must now seek indictments from a regular grand jury. The Trump team’s filing raises a number of legal concerns, both about Georgia law relating to special grand juries and about how a special grand jury was used in this inquiry. Mr. Trump’s lawyers have already sought to scuttle the investigation with a motion, filed in March, to quash much of the collected evidence and take Ms. Willis off the investigation.

Feb 16 (Reuters) - Parts of a Georgia grand jury report on former U.S. President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the state are due to be made public on Thursday, though a judge has ordered that any recommendations on criminal charges be kept secret. McBurney said the report includes "a roster of who should (or should not) be indicted." Trump, who has launched another run for the White House in 2024, has made false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him through widespread voting fraud. At a January court hearing on whether to release the report, Willis said charging decisions were "imminent." Trump on Jan. 2, 2021, called Georgia's top election official, Brad Raffensperger, and repeated his false claims the election results were fraudulent.
