CNN —Robert Pattinson’s Batman has not yet used the Batboat in his adventures, but the British actor said that he previously made use of another multifunctional boat – an inflatable one that he used for sleeping, sitting and eating on. “There was a time when the only piece of furniture I had for about six months was an inflatable boat that would double as my couch, bed, and dining table,” he told Architectural Digest in an interview published Wednesday. Featuring two rounded arms that jut out like giant earlobes, the sofa is covered in a white linen velvet with a base of pink onyx that matches drink trays in the arms. The design originated from Pattinson’s sketches of furniture he thought “would make people interact in a playful and informal way,” he told Architectural Digest. “They all had disproportionate, oversized elements that were quite fun,” he said.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will attend the APEC summit in San Francisco on Nov. 15-18, Yoon's office said on Wednesday. After the U.S. trip, Yoon is set to pay a state visit to Britain on Nov. 20-23 following an invitation from King Charles and visit France on Nov. 23-26 as part of efforts to bolster support for hosting the 2030 World Expo, Yoon's deputy national security adviser Kim Tae-hyo said. The host country for the 2030 expo is expected to be decided this month by a vote of the member states of the International Bureau of Expositions, the expo organising body. Yoon will also visit the Netherlands on Dec. 12-13 following an invitation from King Willem-Alexander, local media reported, in what would be the first state visit by a South Korean president since the countries established diplomatic ties in 1961. In his role as head of state, King Charles is his government’s servant and representative. Backed by his undoubted convening power, King Charles could make a historic contribution to the debate about reparatory justice. Crucially, King Charles is not just the British head of state and the head of the Commonwealth. Every day that passes without a similar statement from King Charles is a day too many. He could take inspiration from CARICOM — the Caribbean Economic Community — and its 10-Point Action Plan for Reparatory Justice.

On their first visit to an African country since ascending the throne a decade ago, the King and Queen of the Netherlands made a symbolic visit on Friday to the Slave Lodge in Cape Town, South Africa, where Dutch colonists once enslaved thousands of Africans and Asians. As they entered the two-story building with creaky floors, they were confronted by members of another royal house: a small group of leaders of the Khoi and the San, the Indigenous groups who were first displaced 350 years ago by Dutch colonists in what is today Cape Town. The Dutch King, Willem-Alexander, formally apologized earlier this year for his country’s role in slavery and colonialism. But South Africa’s Indigenous groups and the descendants of those enslaved by the Dutch want a direct apology — as well as reparations — from the Netherlands for atrocities committed in South Africa during 150 years of colonialism. “If we look at the devastation created by Dutch colonialism in this part of the world, I think a very specific apology addressing South Africa can go some distance,” said Nico Botha, head of a commission for the Khoi and the San, recently established by the South African government.

To fix Britain, Labour will need new debt rules

Having fiscal rules – and sticking to them – is crucial for governments. The Bank of England expects anaemic GDP growth of 0.5% next year and 0.25% in 2025, and long-term growth of just 1%. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsThe Labour leadership is concerned that rewriting debt rules would unsettle bond investors still scarred by Truss’s fiscal follies. What Britain’s next government shouldn’t do is obsess about restrictive fiscal rules at the expense of investments that could get the country out of its current hole. Listening to his moans and wails, I realized that, excruciating as my previous night had been, I’d gotten off comparatively easy. Ava, in the waiting room, saw the man’s adult daughter helplessly listening to her father’s agonies, her head in her hands, her face gray. And it’s just around the time your senescent parents die, releasing you from your last grim filial duties, that you start noticing signs of your own incipient decline. The world is arranged to discreetly conceal this side of life from us — the messy, ragged back of the tapestry. Then I was released back into the “real” Paris — the public, lovely one.

Over the years, he shot portraits of King Willem-Alexander and his family and in 2013 he designed the Dutch side of a new euro coin bearing an image of the king when Willem-Alexander acceded to the throne. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo's trip to China last month had promised some economic and trade detente between the two superpowers now at loggerheads. And none of the 222 funds polled expected China economic growth to be any higher next year than this - mirroring a recent Reuters survey of domestic and overseas banks and investors. As these sorts of surveys go, there's an awful lot in there that could spell "peak gloom". Indeed, shorting China equities was deemed the second "most crowded trade" behind long exposure to supercharged Big Tech stocks. Even if the economy turns, political catalysts for a return to China may be slow in coming.

“Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, was awarded the Golden Lion for best film at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on Saturday by a competition jury led by Damien Chazelle. The film stars Emma Stone in a virtuoso performance as a woman with an initially childlike understanding of the world who comes into her own through a sexual and philosophical journey. Bella Baxter, the main character in the film, “wouldn’t exist without Emma Stone,” Lanthimos said. Like many other actors in films screened at the festival, Stone was not in attendance, as the strike by SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents television and movie actors, continued. Set in a partly fantastical 19th-century Europe, “Poor Things” follows Bella (Stone) on her eye-opening adventures in Tony McNamara’s adaptation of the 1992 Alasdair Gray novel.

And you thought Barbie’s creation myth was head-spinning! “Poor Things,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, often plays like a wild, art-house remix of Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster doll opus. U.S. Treasury yields fell on Monday as investors remained focused on remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell that signaled the possibility of more interest rate hikes to tackle inflation. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield was down at 4.2217%. While Powell said the Fed could be flexible, he said it still has further to go to fight inflation. "Although inflation has moved down from its peak — a welcome development — it remains too high," Powell said in prepared remarks. CNN —William Friedkin, director of iconic 1970s films including “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” has died, his wife Sherry Lansing, the former CEO of Paramount Pictures, told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. Friedkin won the Oscar for best director for “French Connection” in 1972, going on to be nominated for the same trophy again two years later for occult horror “Exorcist,” the genre-defying hit that racked up ten nominations and two statuettes. Curiously, Friedkin once told Cinephilia Beyond that his original intention wasn’t even to make a horror film with “The Exorcist.”“I recognize that audiences for generations have considered it a horror film,” he observed. “I won’t deny that, but when I set out to make it, the writer and I never had any concept of it as a horror film. Reprisals over climate policies come at a time of record-breaking extreme heat across the globe, with July poised to be the hottest month in human history.
